Powder Mill Campground

We did not camp here but visited. Just tent camping, $10/day. Small boat ramp like area to access the river. Clean hole in the ground restrooms. I'm doing my post for the Blue Springs trailhead. There is no information posted in this campground about it. There is what looks like a trailhead at the back of the campground. It has a sign that says Blue Springs with an arrow and a knocked down trailhead post, but when when you head that way you encounter a huge nest of fallen trees and no where to go. There is another trailhead post sign that says nothing about where it leads, to the right of the restrooms. We got so close to being at the blue springs main trail and ran into a flooded trail. Before that was the real stinker, the trail got so narrow and so full of brush or huge amounts of fallen trees to have to climb around. Not an easy trail at all. There was one spot where there were very cool cliffs and small caves. Just wanting other people to know. - Rachel Thomason

Powder Mill Campground Introduce

For those in Missouri with a deep appreciation for the raw beauty of nature and a desire for a truly rustic camping experience, Powder Mill Campground in Ellington offers an authentic escape into the heart of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. This primitive campground is a haven for tent campers and those who seek to immerse themselves in the tranquility of the Current River, away from the more developed sites. It’s a place where the sounds of the river and the rustle of leaves replace urban noise, inviting you to slow down and reconnect with the wilderness.

Powder Mill Campground is not about abundant amenities, but about the purity of the outdoor experience. It's a destination for those who are prepared to embrace a back-to-basics approach, bringing their own supplies and enjoying the simple pleasures of a campfire under a star-filled sky. Despite some challenges noted by recent visitors regarding trail conditions and flood impacts, the fundamental appeal of Powder Mill remains its stunning riverside location and the opportunity for a peaceful, secluded getaway, particularly during weekdays. For many Missouri locals, this kind of unspoiled environment is exactly what they seek for a truly refreshing and memorable camping trip.

The allure of Powder Mill lies in its direct connection to the Current River and its position within one of Missouri's most cherished natural treasures. It’s a campground that promises quiet mornings, serene afternoons by the water, and evenings filled with the natural ambiance of the Ozarks. While a certain level of preparedness and adaptability is recommended due to the primitive nature of the site and potential natural challenges, the rewards of experiencing this untouched corner of Missouri are immeasurable for the true outdoor enthusiast.

Powder Mill Campground is located in Ellington, MO 63638, USA, deep within the scenic embrace of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. This prime location places it directly on the banks of the Current River, a jewel among Missouri's pristine waterways. Ellington itself is a small, welcoming community that serves as a gateway to numerous outdoor adventures in the surrounding national park land.

Accessibility to Powder Mill Campground is generally straightforward, though visitors should be mindful that like many areas within the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, some roads leading to and within the campground might be unpaved or gravel. It is typically accessed via Highway 106, which provides a picturesque drive through the Ozark landscape. From Eminence, for example, visitors would drive east on Highway 106 for about 13.5 miles. After crossing a bridge over the Current River, the first right turn leads to Powder Mill Campground. The road then continues to a large grass field, which forms the campground area.

The campground's direct proximity to the Current River is a major highlight, offering visitors immediate access for various water-based activities. There's a small boat ramp-like area, making it convenient for those looking to launch canoes, kayaks, or smaller fishing boats directly into the river. This river access is key to the campground's appeal, allowing for easy swimming, fishing, and floating experiences. It’s important to note, however, that due to past flood impacts, some areas of river access might be more challenging than others, and visitors should exercise caution and assess conditions upon arrival. While cell service can be unreliable in this more remote part of the Ozarks, this often contributes to the desired sense of disconnection and immersion in nature that many campers seek.
