It's a prime example of the untouched beauty that defines "Big Sky Country."
Whether you’re an avid angler, a family looking for a quiet place to unwind by the water, or simply someone seeking to disconnect from the daily grind, Peters Creek Campground provides a fantastic opportunity. It requires a bit of a drive, but as many locals will tell you, the journey through our scenic landscapes is often as enjoyable as the destination itself. This campground is a testament to the rugged charm of Montana, offering a genuine outdoor experience for those willing to embrace the adventure.
Peters Creek Campground is situated near Hungry Horse, MT 59919, USA, specifically nestled right on the shores of the expansive Hungry Horse Reservoir. This location places it deep within the Flathead National Forest, an area renowned for its dense forests, mountain peaks, and abundant recreational opportunities.
Accessibility to Peters Creek Campground is a key point for potential visitors. It is described as "quite the drive-in, almost 60 miles of dirt road if you come in from the dam." This refers to the scenic but lengthy drive along the East side of the reservoir. However, a review from a satisfied camper noted that the "Road was in great shape," which is a positive indicator for those concerned about unpaved surfaces. While the drive is "slow," it is consistently described as "well worth the drive" due to the stunning scenery encountered along the reservoir. For Montanans, accustomed to navigating our vast landscapes, this kind of journey is often part of the adventure. It's advisable to check current road conditions with the Flathead National Forest Service, especially during spring thaw or after heavy rains, to ensure smooth access. This remote location contributes significantly to the peaceful and secluded atmosphere of the campground.
Peters Creek Campground provides basic, rustic amenities typical of a Forest Service campground in a beautiful natural setting. These services are designed to support a traditional camping experience while maintaining the integrity of the wilderness environment.
Campsites: The campground offers individual campsites. Reviews indicate that "each campsite has fire rings and a picnic table," providing essential infrastructure for outdoor living and cooking.
Vault Toilets: "There is a vaulted restroom" at the campground, and it's noted by a reviewer as a "Clean vault toilet." These are non-flush toilets, but their cleanliness is a significant plus for campers.
Fire Rings: Each site includes a fire ring, perfect for enjoying campfires and cooking outdoors. However, campers must always check for current fire restrictions or burn bans, which are common in Montana, especially during dry seasons.
Picnic Tables: Provided at each site, these offer a convenient surface for meal preparation, dining, and other camp activities.
Lake Access: A major "service" is direct access to Hungry Horse Reservoir, as "All sites are right on the lake." This allows for immediate enjoyment of water-based activities from your campsite.

Lakeside Location: The absolute top highlight is that the campground is "right on Hungry Horse reservoir" and "All sites are right on the lake." This offers unparalleled access to the water for various activities and provides stunning views directly from your campsite.

Stunning Scenery: Being located within the Flathead National Forest and on such a large reservoir ensures breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, forests, and the vast expanse of water. The "slow trip down the East side of the reservoir" is highlighted for its scenic beauty.
Rustic Charm: For those who appreciate a more primitive camping experience, Peters Creek offers that authentic "back to nature" feel. While some sites are "being taken back over by mother nature," this adds to the wild appeal, especially for tent campers seeking deep immersion.
Well-Maintained Road (Recent): Despite the length of the dirt road, a recent review noted it was "in great shape," which is a significant positive for accessibility and overall trip enjoyment.
Return-Worthy Destination: The sentiment "we will return!" from a satisfied camper speaks volumes about the positive and memorable experience Peters Creek offers.

Nice Campground right on Hungry Horse reservoir. Excellent fishing. There is a vaulted restroom each campsite has fire rings and a picnic table. It's quite the drive-in almost 60 miles of dirt road if you come in from the damn.
Feb 25, 2019 · Life Liberty and CampfiresIt's a slow trip down the East side of the reservoir, but well worth the drive. Road was in great shape. Clean vault toilet. Some of the sites are being taken back over by mother nature, but may work well for tent camping. All sites are right on the lake, we will return!
