Perrault Lake Campground

Toivola, MI 49965, USA

4.0
Nice little lakeside free camping spot. No rules posted, so I'm not sure if it's technically allowed but there are several folks posted up here, some look to be longer term. There's room for most size rigs but would be tight and rough for a large class A. There are maybe 4 spots that are remotely flat enough for a rig but a few more spots that are great for tents. There's a small beach/canoe launch. Lots of locals come to fish but everyone seems nice! - Shyla Jobe

This friendly, community-oriented vibe, combined with the natural beauty of Perrault Lake, makes it a welcoming spot for experienced campers and newcomers alike. While it's noted for having "room for most size rigs but would be tight and rough for a large class A," it particularly shines for tent campers and those with smaller trailers or vans. It’s the kind of place where simplicity reigns, allowing the natural surroundings to be the true highlight of your outdoor experience. The proximity to extensive ORV trails, allowing for "a day of riding up to Copper Harbor," adds another layer of adventure for those who enjoy off-road exploration.

Perrault Lake Campground is situated in Toivola, MI 49965, USA. This location places it within the picturesque Keweenaw Peninsula region of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, known for its rugged beauty, mining history, and abundant outdoor recreation. While Toivola is a small community, the drive to the campground itself is part of the experience, leading you deeper into Michigan's verdant forests and pristine landscapes.

Accessibility to Perrault Lake Campground is generally good, especially for those familiar with rustic U.P. roads. As a free, potentially unmanaged site, the internal road conditions might be "rough" for very large vehicles, but most standard cars, trucks, and smaller RVs or trailers should navigate it without significant issues. Reviews indicate "there's room for most size rigs but would be tight and rough for a large class A," meaning Class B and C RVs, pop-ups, and travel trailers are likely to find suitable spots. There are "maybe 4 spots that are remotely flat enough for a rig but a few more spots that are great for tents," suggesting a varied topography that caters to different camping setups. The presence of a "small beach/canoe launch" directly at the lake shore emphasizes the direct water accessibility, perfect for launching kayaks or canoes. For Michigan locals, the journey to Perrault Lake is an opportunity to explore the lesser-traveled roads of the U.P., leading to a truly rewarding and secluded camping destination. Its strategic location also provides "great access to ORV trails," making it a fantastic base for off-road enthusiasts wanting to explore the expansive trail networks of the region, even allowing for day trips to iconic destinations like Copper Harbor.

As a free, rustic, and potentially unmanaged camping area, Perrault Lake Campground offers essential, minimalist services, focusing on the natural experience:

  • Campsites: Multiple unnumbered sites are available, suitable for tents and smaller RVs/trailers. Some sites are flatter for rigs, while others are ideal for tents.
  • Lakeside Access: Direct access to Perrault Lake for fishing, swimming, and paddling.
  • Small Beach/Canoe Launch: A designated area for launching canoes, kayaks, and small boats, allowing easy water entry.
  • ORV Trail Access: The campground provides direct or very close access to Michigan’s extensive ORV trail system, making it a popular spot for off-road enthusiasts.
  • No Posted Rules/Free Camping: Based on user reviews, there are "no rules posted," and it's described as a "free camping spot." This suggests a more informal and self-regulated environment. (Note: While reviews mention no posted rules, campers should always practice Leave No Trace principles and be respectful of the environment and other users. Local DNR guidelines for dispersed camping should be followed if applicable.)
  • No Developed Facilities: As a free, rustic site, campers should expect no developed amenities such as potable water pumps, restrooms (vault or flush toilets), picnic tables, or designated fire rings. Campers must be entirely self-sufficient, packing in all necessities and packing out all waste.

Address: Toivola, MI 49965, USA

For general information about recreation in the area or potential regulations for rustic camping in Michigan's state forests, locals are advised to consult the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website or contact the closest DNR office or a regional US Forest Service office (such as the Ottawa National Forest office if applicable to this specific location’s management). These resources can provide broader guidelines on dispersed camping, fire regulations, and "Leave No Trace" principles that should always be followed when camping in undeveloped areas.

Perrault Lake Campground is perfectly suited for Michigan locals who cherish the state's wild side and prefer a genuine, unburdened outdoor experience. For many Michiganders, particularly those in the Upper Peninsula, the appeal of free, rustic camping is immense, offering an accessible way to enjoy the abundant natural resources without the commercialism found at developed campgrounds. This site caters specifically to those who are self-sufficient, comfortable with minimalist amenities, and truly value the quietude and raw beauty of the wilderness.

Its dual appeal for both water enthusiasts (fishing, kayaking, canoeing on Perrault Lake) and off-road adventurers (direct access to ORV trails, including rides to iconic spots like Copper Harbor) makes it incredibly versatile. It’s a place where families can introduce children to simple camping, friends can gather for a relaxing weekend of fishing, or solo travelers can find solitude. The sense of community among "locals" who frequent the spot adds to its charm, creating a welcoming environment. Perrault Lake Campground truly represents Michigan's adventurous spirit, offering an authentic U.P. experience that resonates deeply with residents looking for their next genuine outdoor escape.
