Pawnee Campground

Ward, CO 80481, USA

4.0
Very nice and quiet place. Beautiful lakes, where you can walk. My favorite lake is the Blue Lake. Try to get there in August, when not all the ice on it has melted. Floating aisbergs and blue water are great. And the camp itself is very good. Warm days and cold nights, give pleasure near the fire in the summer months. Around you can see beautiful flowers, deer, moose and beautiful birds. - Olga Bond

Pawnee Campground Introduce

Welcome, fellow Coloradans, to an in-depth exploration of Pawnee Campground, a remarkable destination nestled high in the Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forests near Ward. For those who seek a profound connection with Colorado's majestic high-altitude wilderness, where the air is crisp, the nights are cool, and the scenery is simply breathtaking, Pawnee Campground offers an unparalleled experience. This isn't just a place to set up camp; it's a gateway to the iconic Brainard Lake Recreation Area and the pristine Indian Peaks Wilderness, promising unforgettable adventures and "heavenly rest" amidst nature's grandeur.

Pawnee Campground is celebrated for its "very nice and quiet place" and its strategic location at the foot of the Continental Divide, at an elevation of 10,350 feet. Imagine waking up to the serene beauty of nearby Brainard Lake, with its "beautiful blue water" and, if you're lucky in August, the magical sight of "floating aisbergs." Visitors consistently praise the abundance of "beautiful flowers, deer, moose and beautiful birds" that make this area a wildlife lover's paradise. This guide aims to provide you with all the essential details to plan your visit, covering its unique high-altitude location, crucial accessibility information (including timed entry for the area), the services offered, and the standout features that make it a cherished spot for Colorado locals.

The allure of Pawnee Campground extends beyond its picturesque setting; it’s a place steeped in outdoor tradition, with some visitors "camping, fishing up here since I was a child." Its elevation provides a welcome escape from the "super hot" temperatures of lower elevations during summer, offering "warm days and cold nights" that are perfect for gathering around a campfire. While it requires planning due to its popularity and a timed entry system for the Brainard Lake Recreation Area, the rewards of seclusion, stunning views, and unparalleled access to some of Colorado's best hiking and fishing are well worth the effort. Prepare to immerse yourself in an environment that truly embodies the spirit of Colorado's great outdoors, where every moment is an opportunity to create lasting memories amidst stunning natural beauty and abundant wildlife.

Pawnee Campground is situated in Ward, CO 80481, USA, specifically within the Brainard Lake Recreation Area of the Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forests. It lies at a significant elevation of approximately 10,350 feet at the foot of the Continental Divide, offering true high-alpine camping.

Access to Pawnee Campground involves a journey from Ward via Colorado Highway 72 (Peak to Peak Scenic Byway) to Brainard Lake Road (Forest Road 112). From there, you'll travel about 4.4 to 5 miles west to reach the campground, which is located on the east side of Brainard Lake.

It is crucial for visitors to understand the access requirements for the Brainard Lake Recreation Area, which includes Pawnee Campground. During the summer operating season (typically from mid-June to mid-October), a timed entry parking reservation is required to enter the Brainard Lake Recreation Area. However, a significant benefit for campers is that visitors with a Pawnee Campground reservation do not need to purchase a separate timed ticket to enter the area; they must simply show proof of their campground reservation at the Welcome Station. Parking is limited to Pawnee Campground for the duration of the reservation, meaning if you wish to park at other trailheads within the recreation area, a separate timed ticket for those lots is required. This system helps manage the high popularity of the area and protects it from excessive human impacts. Roads are paved within the recreation area, making access relatively smooth once past the entrance station, but visitors should be prepared for mountain driving and high elevation conditions.
