Introduction / Overview
For Illinoisans seeking an authentic outdoor experience within reach of urban conveniences, Paul Wolff Campground, nestled within the beautiful Burnidge Forest Preserve in Elgin, offers a unique camping opportunity. As part of the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, this campground is celebrated for its well-maintained grounds, friendly staff, and extensive network of multi-use trails. However, it's essential for prospective campers to be fully aware of its specific amenities, as some past reviews highlight certain limitations. While one family praised the "well kept" nature of the grounds and "clean bathrooms," enjoying the friendly atmosphere and beautiful hiking trails, another noted a significant absence of showers on-site and no sewer hookups at RV sites. Furthermore, issues with the water's iron content and smell, as well as concerns about ticks, were raised. Despite these points, Paul Wolff Campground provides a safe and engaging environment for those who understand and are prepared for a more rustic camping style. It caters to a range of campers, from those with RVs to tent campers and even equestrians, all looking to connect with nature in the heart of Illinois.

Paul Wolff Campground Reviews
This was our first time visiting this campground and we enjoyed it very much. We loved how well kept it is and how clean the bathrooms were. There were many cute dogs and children playing about memorial weekend. We felt safe as there was security making their rounds around the campground. The staff was super friendly from start to finish and the hiking trails beautiful and well kept a site to remember. They have paved, gravel and grass trails. Our site had water and electric hook up no sewer, but there are two dump stations on premise. We live 30 minutes away and will come back again wish there was a discount for Mchenry county residents would definitely make more trips here then.
Jun 05, 2025 · Sylvia WolfeThere are absolutely no showers onsite, and nothing was mentioned on the website about having no showers. There are also no RV sites with sewer. For a family of 7 staying 5 nights, this was not ideal. Of the 3 "bathrooms" here, only one has proper toilets and running water to sinks. Unfortunately, that bathroom also has no working ventilation.Side note: the water here is full of iron, smells horrible, and stained the sink and shower in our RV. Also, watch out for ticks!I don't recommend this campground unless you aren't planning to stay very long or you don't care about being clean during camping. We would have chosen a different campsite if this one allowed refunds [they don't.] or if there was another camping option nearby. [There isn't.]We don't plan to return.
Jun 26, 2025 · Erica BurchWe stayed in a primitive tent site. They are walk in but very close to parking. I will say that site P7 and P9 might as well be one site as there is NO separation between sites. Also, apparently state forest preserves forbid anything hanging from trees, including hammocks.Like it was peaceful but the cost per night, restrictions and lack privacy made me sad. Pit toilets were VERY clean and water/dumpster access was very convenient.
Aug 20, 2024 · Deanne CurcioThe only thing nice about here is the friendliness of the staff and the inclusion of water and electricity. This campground makes you pay $15 to dump your waste. Absolutely no showers, hence the 1-star review.
Jun 22, 2025 · David BurchWe paid for a site with water and had to go buy a 100 ft water hose to be able to hook up. Additionally the water tasted like and smelled like metal. When we unhooked from water a week later, eveything was covered in rust!! It completely destroyed the new water filter we put in as well as left all sinks/shower etc stained.
