For us Coloradans, Palisade Campground truly embodies the spirit of what we seek in an outdoor escape. Its suitability for locals is multifaceted, reflecting our unique appreciation for the mountains, rivers, and the tranquility they offer.
Firstly, its location within the stunning Rio Grande National Forest, along the scenic CO-149, makes it an accessible yet deeply immersive mountain experience. We Coloradans cherish places where we can truly feel "away from it all," and Palisade delivers. The drive itself is a scenic journey that primes you for the beauty to come, making the trip feel like part of the adventure rather than just a commute. Being just off the main road, yet remarkably quiet, provides that perfect balance of convenience and peaceful seclusion that is often sought after but rarely found.
Secondly, Palisade Campground’s specific charm for smaller campers and tents aligns perfectly with a common preference among local outdoor enthusiasts who often favor a more nimble and less commercial camping setup. Waking up to the gentle sounds of the Rio Grande just outside your tent or camper, with direct access for a morning cast or simply enjoying the riverside air, is an experience that many of us Coloradans dream of.
Moreover, the quiet and inherently beautiful nature of the campground, combined with its proximity to South Fork and the quaint town of Creede, offers a well-rounded local experience. We can easily stock up on supplies or enjoy a meal in a charming mountain town, then retreat back to the peaceful solitude of our campsite. Whether it's a weekend fishing trip, a basecamp for exploring the San Juan Mountains' hiking trails (though not directly at the campground, plentiful in the surrounding forest), or simply a serene spot to unwind and breathe in the crisp mountain air, Palisade Campground offers a quintessential Colorado outdoor experience. It's a place where the grandeur of our state is palpable, and where every Coloradan can find their moment of peace and adventure amidst some of the most breathtaking landscapes our home has to offer.

Palisade Campground Reviews
It's one of the most beautiful campgrounds ever. Don't bring a large camper in here. Mine is 20 feet and is fine. You can go a little bigger, but I wouldn't push anything over 28, I think .
Sep 13, 2024 · Todd In-MXGreat spot just outside of Creede. We camped right on the river. The campground is just off the main road, but still very quiet.
Oct 10, 2024 · Thomas HowardBeautiful campground. The views of the Rio Grande River are superb. Loved our spot which was directly by the river. A hummingbird kept flying around our campground. Quite possibly the best campground in the Rio Grande National Forest. Also the cleanest restrooms. Overall a great spot.
