Ophir Campgrounds

Campground ★4.0

Tooele, UT 84074, USA

Late June trip to look at the old mining town led us to stay at this campground. It was a midweek night so we had our pick of the 18 campsites available. There are picnic tables and fire pits in each site.Vault toilets (one building with a male and female side) located at the east end of the camp. The wildlife we encountered included deer, squirrels, and lizards. This is in an open range for cattle grazing and it can feel like a wooded pasture. The ground is a bit rocky in most places and sloping, so don't expect a flat soft grassy area to pitch a tent. The creek provided some nice atmosphere and cool refreshment. - Jeremy Northrop

Ophir Campgrounds is located in Tooele, UT 84074, USA. Its address places it within the picturesque Ophir Canyon, a historic area that was once a bustling mining town. The campground is situated approximately 25 miles south of Tooele City, offering a sense of seclusion and a true mountain escape while still being a manageable drive from the Salt Lake and Utah County areas. The road leading up to the campgrounds can be a bit rugged, and a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended, especially after rain or snow, to ensure a smooth and safe journey. The drive itself is an adventure, with scenic views of the Oquirrh Mountains and the surrounding landscape.

Accessibility is a key consideration for visitors to Ophir Campgrounds. The road can be a bit challenging, so it is important to check weather conditions before your visit. The campground is typically open from mid-May to October 31, as the canyon is closed during the winter due to snow. On-site parking is available at each of the 18 campsites, which simplifies the process of unloading gear. The fact that the campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis means you can't make a reservation, so arriving early, especially on a weekend, is a good idea to secure a spot. The maximum stay is 7 days, which allows for an extended visit.
