North Star Resort of Leech Lake Introduce
Howdy, Minnesota adventurers and lake lovers! Are you dreaming of a serene escape to one of Minnesota's premier fishing destinations, where the tranquility of nature meets the comforts of a lakeside community? North Star Resort of Leech Lake, nestled in the secluded beauty of Federal Dam, Minnesota, offers a unique opportunity to experience the iconic Leech Lake firsthand. This article will provide an engaging and factual overview of what to expect at North Star Resort, helping you decide if this hidden gem is your ideal next getaway.
North Star Resort of Leech Lake, with its rich history and prime location on the far northeast side of Leech Lake, near the Federal Damsite, has long been a destination for those seeking the quintessential Minnesota lake experience. While some online satellite views might suggest a large, modern boat harbor, a recent review from a long-time family associated with the resort clarifies that it has evolved. What was once a broader resort with cabins and more extensive facilities, particularly during its ownership by Ame and Skeet Miller from the 1950s to 1960s, has now transitioned. It appears to be more focused on RV camping and serves as a "homestead for the current owner's family." This shift means that traditional boat harbors with numerous slips, as seen in some aerial views, may not be present for guest use in the way one might expect from a large commercial marina.
Despite this evolution, the core appeal of the location remains strong, especially for fishing enthusiasts. Leech Lake itself is renowned for its excellent fishing, and North Star Resort offers direct access to this incredible natural resource. For those whose primary interest is casting a line and enjoying the lake's bounty, this resort is "great." However, for visitors hoping for extensive beach walking or large, developed recreational areas beyond fishing, it's important to note the resident feedback: "If you want to walk the beach, you can't go far. The owner's family put a barrier up so no one can get very far." The only significant walkable area mentioned is a 2.5-mile narrow road. This means that while the lake itself is a massive draw, the resort's on-site recreational footprint for non-fishing activities might be more limited than larger, more commercially developed resorts.
Understanding these nuances is key to setting appropriate expectations and ensuring North Star Resort of Leech Lake aligns with your specific vacation or living preferences.
North Star Resort of Leech Lake is idyllically situated at 584 Northstar Dr NE, Federal Dam, MN 56641, USA. This address places it firmly within the serene and picturesque landscape of northern Minnesota, specifically on the far northeastern side of Leech Lake, near the Federal Damsite. This location offers a truly secluded and tranquil experience, perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse themselves in nature.
Leech Lake itself is Minnesota's third-largest inland lake, covering nearly 115,000 acres, and is a premier destination for fishing, boating, and various water sports. The resort's direct access to such a vast and renowned body of water is a significant draw. Federal Dam, while a small community, provides a sense of quiet charm and local character.
Accessing the resort typically involves driving on local roads that lead to this secluded area of Leech Lake. While the area is secluded, it is still reachable via established routes from larger towns. For example, nearby Walker, a hub for the Leech Lake area, offers more extensive services, dining, and shopping options, usually within a reasonable driving distance. The seclusion means that you'll be away from heavy traffic and urban noise, truly enveloped by Minnesota's Northwoods beauty. However, visitors should be prepared for the isolated nature of the immediate surroundings, meaning less access to extensive walking trails directly on the property beyond the mentioned 2.5-mile road. The journey to the resort itself offers scenic views of the Chippewa National Forest, setting the tone for a peaceful lakeside retreat.
- RV Camping Sites: The resort has largely transitioned to primarily accommodate RV campers, suggesting it offers dedicated sites for recreational vehicles. While specific hookup details (e.g., 30/50 amp, water, sewer) are not explicitly stated in the provided reviews, these are standard expectations for an RV camp.
- Direct Lake Access for Fishing: A primary service and highlight, the resort provides direct access to Leech Lake, which is well-known for its excellent fishing opportunities. This is ideal for anglers.
- Long-Term Stays: The mention of the resort becoming "more of an RV camp and homestead for the current owner's family" suggests that it accommodates long-term or seasonal RV stays, offering a stable base for an extended period.
- Secluded Natural Environment: The location offers a secluded setting, providing a quiet and peaceful atmosphere away from urban noise and crowds.
- Proximity to Federal Damsite: Being near the Federal Damsite implies a connection to this historical and functional landmark, though specific services related to it are not detailed.
It is important to note that based on the provided customer feedback, traditional resort amenities such as a large boat harbor with many slips for guests, or extensive walkable beach areas directly on the property, may not be available or are limited. Inquiries about specific services should be directed to the resort management.
- Exceptional Fishing on Leech Lake: This is arguably the top highlight. Leech Lake is a prime fishing destination in Minnesota, boasting a wide variety of species including walleye, muskie, northern pike, perch, and bass. Direct access from the resort is a major advantage for anglers.
- Secluded and Tranquil Environment: Nestled in a quiet area near the Federal Damsite, the resort offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle, ideal for relaxation and enjoying the natural sounds of the Northwoods.
- Long-Standing History: The mention of previous family ownership (Ame and Skeet Miller from 1955-1967) provides a sense of history and legacy, indicating that this has been a cherished lakeside spot for decades.
- RV-Focused Accommodations: For RV enthusiasts, the transition to being primarily an "RV camp" suggests that the facilities are geared towards comfortable RV living, potentially including necessary hookups and space.
- Unique Community Feel (Historical Context): While current details are limited, the historical context of being a family-owned resort for generations often translates into a more personal and welcoming atmosphere, even if it's now primarily a "homestead for the current owner's family." This might mean a more authentic, less commercialized experience.
- Natural Beauty of Leech Lake: Guests can enjoy the stunning scenery of Minnesota's third-largest lake, with opportunities for quiet contemplation by the water.
- Potential for Wildlife Viewing: Given the secluded, natural setting, there's a good chance for observing local wildlife, adding to the outdoor experience.
It is important for prospective visitors to note that while fishing is a major highlight, the extent of other recreational activities directly on site, such as extensive beach access or a large boat harbor, may be limited based on recent resident feedback.

North Star Resort of Leech Lake Reviews
It appears on the satellite view Google map that a boat harbor with many boat slips has been installed since the review posted 10 years ago. This resort is definitely in a secluded area of Leech Lake on the far NE side, near the Federal Damsite.
Dec 29, 2023 · Robert ChudekMy Great Grandparents, Ame and Skeet Miller owned Noth Star from about 1955 to 1967. Grandpa's brother Warren lived there for some time as well. Unfortunately, they were not Swedish. The Lake does not change and it is great for fishing. North Star has become more of an RV camp and homestead for the current owner's family. There is no Harbor for boats. If you a just imto fishing, its great. If you want to walk the beach, you can't go far. The owner's family put a barrier up so no one gan get very far. The only place to walk is the 2.5 mile narrow road.
