I typically never post a comment about my experience somewhere but I think it is absolutely ridiculous to make it mandatory that you have to reserve Friday night to reserve a spot when you are only going to be there on a saturday and sunday . We have always stayed at the North Fork campground in the past but I will take my money else were. Stupid idea. - REBECCA OWENS

North Fork Campground Introduce

Howdy, Colorado outdoor enthusiasts! If you're on the hunt for a genuine mountain escape, a place where the towering aspens whisper secrets and the White River offers soothing melodies, then look no further than North Fork Campground near Meeker. For us Coloradans, finding that perfect balance of natural beauty, tranquility, and access to our favorite outdoor activities is key, and North Fork, despite a few quirks, offers just that. It’s a spot to truly unplug and immerse yourself in the stunning landscapes that make our state famous.

North Fork Campground is nestled in a high-elevation aspen grove, providing a cool and shaded retreat during the warmer months. It’s an ideal setting for those seeking recreation and relaxation, whether your passion is fishing, hiking, or simply unwinding by a campfire. While previous campers have noted a particular reservation policy and some uneven terrain, the overall experience of peace, natural beauty, and abundant wildlife makes it a worthwhile destination for many local adventurers. This article will provide you with all the details you need to plan your next memorable trip to North Fork Campground.

Location and Accessibility

North Fork Campground is beautifully situated on the western slope of the Colorado Rockies, at an elevation of 7,800 feet. Its address is listed as County Rd 8, Meeker, CO 81641, USA. This places it within the vast and stunning White River National Forest, a renowned area for outdoor recreation in Colorado. The campground sits above the North Fork White River valley, surrounded by forested mountain peaks, offering a truly immersive wilderness experience.

Accessing North Fork Campground involves a scenic drive. From I-70 west of Denver, you would take Highway 13 to Meeker, then turn onto County Road 8 and continue for approximately 32 miles. Finally, a left turn leads directly into North Fork Campground. The roads are generally well-maintained for access, though as with any mountain road, conditions can vary with weather. It’s always advisable to check current road conditions, especially if traveling during shoulder seasons or after heavy precipitation.

While some remote campgrounds have no cell service, recent reviews indicate that AT&T and T-Mobile users might find cell service at North Fork Campground. However, it's always wise to prepare for limited or no connectivity, bringing printed maps and essential information, as service can be spotty in mountainous regions. The drive itself is part of the experience, leading you deeper into the serene landscapes of the White River National Forest.

Services Offered

North Fork Campground provides essential services designed to facilitate a comfortable, yet authentic, camping experience in the wilderness.

  • Standard Nonelectric Sites: The campground offers standard non-electric campsites, suitable for both tents and RVs/trailers. Sites can accommodate RVs and trailers between 30 and 40 feet in length.

  • Full Reservability: Unlike some first-come, first-serve campgrounds, all sites at North Fork Campground are currently reservable. Reservations can be booked up to six months in advance via Recreation.gov. While this is convenient for planning, it's worth noting a past frustration mentioned by a user regarding a mandatory Friday night reservation for weekend stays, which may or may not still be in effect. Always check the latest policies on Recreation.gov.

  • Potable Water: Potable water is available at the campground, which is a significant convenience for campers, eliminating the need to haul in all your drinking water.

  • Vault Toilets: The campground features new and "very clean/well kept" vault toilets, ensuring basic sanitation facilities are available.

  • Bear Boxes: Lockers are available at campsites to keep food and toiletries away from bears, promoting wildlife safety and responsible food storage.

  • Firewood Available: Firewood is readily available at the campground, making it easy to enjoy a campfire (when permitted) without bringing your own supply. One reviewer noted there was "A TON of firewood available," which is always a plus.

  • On-Site Camp Host: A "friendly and knowledgeable" camp host is on-site, ready to assist with needs and ensure the campground remains clean and orderly. This presence greatly enhances the visitor experience.

  • Trash Service: Trash facilities are provided, allowing campers to properly dispose of their waste and help maintain the cleanliness of the campground and surrounding natural environment.

Features / Highlights

North Fork Campground boasts several appealing features that contribute to its popularity among Colorado campers.

  • Towering Aspen Grove Setting: The campground is set within a "towering aspen grove," providing ample shade and a picturesque backdrop for your camping experience. This natural feature offers a cool retreat during summer days.

  • Spaced-Out Sites with Privacy: Most sites are "widely spaced" and offer "decent privacy," thanks to a "heavy understory of tall grass and wild roses." This creates a more secluded and intimate camping environment, even when the campground is busy.

  • Proximity to North Fork White River: The North Fork of the White River runs "across from the campground," offering opportunities for fly fishing. Rainbow, brown, cutthroat, and brook trout are plentiful, making it an ideal spot for anglers. While access can be tricky in some areas due to dense growth, easy access points are available a short drive down the road.

  • Wildlife Viewing Opportunities: The area is rich in wildlife. Visitors have reported seeing "about a thousand sheep wander through the valley," and the region is home to elk, deer, and various bird species. Bear sightings also occur, highlighting the authentic wilderness experience and the need for bear precautions.

  • Access to OHV and Hiking Trails: North Fork Campground is close to a number of OHV (Off-Highway Vehicle) trails, and "numerous hiking trails" are located about 20 miles up the road, leading into the stunning Flat Tops wilderness area. This makes it a great base for various outdoor adventures.

  • Scenic Beauty and Quiet Atmosphere: Despite the mention of uneven terrain in some tent spots, the overall consensus is that it's an "awesome, serene and beautiful campground!" The quiet environment allows for true relaxation and enjoyment of nature's sounds.

  • Good for Groups: One reviewer mentioned having five sites for a group, indicating that the campground can accommodate multiple parties traveling together, making it suitable for family gatherings or friend excursions.

The presence of a friendly camp host, potable water, and bear boxes demonstrates a commitment to a well-managed yet natural experience.
