The Palmetto Ridge loop is particularly highlighted for its paved access, "humongous" gravel sites with some vegetation for privacy, and generous spacing. This variety allows campers to choose a setting that best suits their needs.

The famous Birdwalk and boat tours (when available) offer prime opportunities for wildlife observation.
- Myakka Outpost and Activities: The Outpost, though a few miles from the camping loops, serves as a hub for recreational activities. It offers boat tours (river conditions permitting), and kayak/canoe rentals, allowing visitors to explore the Myakka River and Upper Myakka Lake.
- Canopy Walkway: A unique feature of the park, the Canopy Walkway provides a rare opportunity to walk among the treetops, offering a "bird's eye view" of the hammock and its inhabitants. (Availability can be subject to park conditions).
- Dark and Quiet Nights: Campers consistently praise the "very dark & quiet at night" atmosphere, ideal for stargazing and a truly restful sleep away from city lights and noise.
- Cell Service Considerations & WiFi Options: While cell service can be "zero" for some carriers (like AT&T), reviews indicate that certain mobile WiFi services (e.g., Winegard Gateway on Verizon) can provide good connectivity for streaming, allowing campers to stay connected if desired.

Myakka River State Park Big Flats Campground Reviews
The Palmetto Ridge loop is where you want to be. It’s the only paved loop. The other 2 loops are gravel, tiny, crowded & no privacy. The palmetto ridge loop has gravel sites but they are humongous and have some vegetation in between. Pretty spaced out as well. There’s zero cell service here but my Winegard Gateway (Verizon) wifi service was at 80% & kept my phone, computer & tv/movies streaming no problem. Pet friendly except for the cabins. Massive park. The outpost is literally like 3 miles into the park from the camping loops in the front, but the store is really cute and there’s a food truck. The boat tours and kayaking were shut down because the river was so low and they’re having some issue with the water that you can’t drink it but it’s fine for showering. They give you free gallons of water up at the ranger station for cooking, drinking and for pets. The map says that there’s a playground, but I never saw one. There are several picnic areas. There’s a ton of hiking. Very dark & quiet at night. Clean bath house & laundry. My site was 50 amp full hookup w/a fire ring & picnic table.
Apr 25, 2025 · Amanda wagnerThe Park itself gets 5 stars no contest. The camping is something I would be ashamed to offer at such a pristine State Park. The camp sites are right on top of each other with very little to no foliage to separate them. Meaning no privacy whatsoever! It's not really a camping feeling at all. Sitting at your picnic table and looking over at the next site five feet away seeing your neighbors on both sides. I don't understand why in a park as enormous as Myakka, they can't have the sites spaced out to offer a little seclusion. I do not recommend for camping. We made the best of it though as the Park itself is absolutely Amazing!
Apr 15, 2025 · Dennis DutraThe site in the Palmetto Ridge area was great! Plenty of room for the Camper and truck, with extra room for a screen tent and large picnic table. Unfortunately the Tram and Boat tours aren't running due to low water and grounds damage from a controlled burn. Call ahead if you're interested in either of these ways to see what the Park is all about.
May 14, 2025 · Peggy B.Such a cool place with wild life. We saw birds, alligators, lizards getting busy. Would recommend bug sprays because those bugs will swarm you. Easy parking beautiful sunset I love it! They have tons of fish too!
Jun 20, 2025 · Binh TranWow what an awesome state park! Unfortunately we were only here 1 night passing thru. We did arrive early enough to check out all the gators sunbathing and take a ride thru the park before setting up our campsite. We also visited the souvenir shop and picked up some firewood. They also had ice and a food truck that had beer/wine. We also noticed the park offers a tram and boat tour if you’re up for either. Hate we couldn’t take advantage of these while here. This would be a great park for biking also. Now onto the camping! Our campsite was huge and well maintained. Usual firepit and picnic table. Bath house was nice and clean with nice hot showers. Noticed they had a washer/dryer available also. We were here first of January and it wasn’t to crowded even though all sites were booked but seemingly unoccupied. We definitely want to come back here one day. Side note the mosquitoes were no joke even first of January! Bring your bug spray and Thermacell!
