Muchwater Recreation Area

MT-135, Plains, MT 59859, USA

4.0
Great free campsite nestled in the forest. No cell service here so you get a great disconnect from the world. The train passed by twice during the night for us but we fell back asleep quickly. They still had an area restriction notice at the entrance, even though that had been lifted a good few weeks prior which meant we had to drive to somewhere with cell service to see if we could stay there! Some sites are more level than others though. No issues with a 29ft RV though. - Dan M

Muchwater Recreation Area Introduce

For Montanans who cherish the freedom of open spaces and the profound quiet of a genuine outdoor escape, Muchwater Recreation Area offers an unparalleled experience. Nestled in the heart of the Lolo National Forest near Plains, this free, dispersed campground is a beloved destination for those seeking to unplug and immerse themselves in Montana's breathtaking natural beauty. It's a place where the gentle flow of the Clark Fork River, the rustle of the forest, and the vast open sky replace the clamor of everyday life. Whether you're a seasoned RVer, a tent-camping purist, or simply looking for a serene spot to reset, Muchwater Recreation Area provides a spacious and tranquil environment to create lasting memories. While it offers a true disconnect, it's essential to understand its rustic nature and prepare for a self-sufficient adventure.

Muchwater Recreation Area is conveniently located off Montana Highway 135 (MT-135) near Plains, MT 59859, USA, making it surprisingly accessible for a dispersed camping area. For those traveling from I-90, take Exit 33 at St. Regis and travel approximately 16 miles northeast on Highway 135 before turning left and following the signs to the campsites. If approaching from Highway 200, turn southwest onto Highway 135 and travel about 6 miles, passing Quinn's Resort, before turning right into the Muchwater area. This accessibility from major routes is a significant advantage, allowing easy entry for various vehicle sizes, including larger RVs (some sites can accommodate rigs 70+ feet). Despite being relatively close to a highway, the campground's design, with sites nestled between the road and the Clark Fork River, provides a surprising sense of seclusion and quiet. The access roads within the campground are described as gravel but generally well-maintained, ensuring a smooth entry to your chosen site. This combination of ease of access and genuine natural immersion makes Muchwater Recreation Area a prime choice for Montana locals seeking a quick, yet profound, escape into the wilderness.

As a dispersed campground managed by the US Forest Service within the Lolo National Forest, Muchwater Recreation Area provides a fundamental, rustic camping experience. This means that while it offers the essential amenities for a comfortable stay, it prioritizes preserving the natural environment over providing extensive modern conveniences. There are typically 15 dispersed campsites, each offering a generous amount of space and privacy, a feature consistently praised by visitors. Each site generally includes a fire ring with a grill, allowing for traditional campfire cooking and warmth, subject to current fire restrictions. Vault toilets are available and are noted in reviews for their relative cleanliness. However, it is crucial for campers to be aware that there is no potable water available on-site, meaning visitors must bring their own drinking water. Similarly, there are no trash receptacles, adhering to a strict "pack it in, pack it out" policy. The absence of cell service is a defining feature, deliberately promoting a disconnect from the digital world. These services are designed to facilitate an authentic, self-reliant outdoor adventure, making Muchwater ideal for those who prefer a less commercialized camping experience.

Services Offered:

  • 15 Dispersed Campsites: Generously spaced sites for both tents and RVs (including big-rig friendly options).
  • Fire Rings with Grills: Available at each campsite for campfires and cooking (check for current fire restrictions).
  • Vault Toilets: Basic restroom facilities are provided.
  • No Potable Water: Campers must bring their own drinking water.
