Mt. Mitchell Campground

2388 NC-128, Burnsville, NC 28714, USA

4.0
This campground is a gem. Just the fact that you are at the top of a mountain, surrounded by balsam firs and soft moss is magical enough. But I felt like the campground was maintained well also. Each campsite is unique in its own way. We were in site #1, which is quite sheltered from the wind (a good thing when camping there in October!), but if you are looking for views and don’t mind the wind then sites 5, 6 and 9 are the best for that. Site 1 is also the only one that does not require carrying all your stuff up the steep stairs! Having flush toilets is a nice perk, and they were really well taken care of. The camp manager was super friendly and had stickers for the kids plus treats for dogs. The bear bins are very large - maybe 4’w, 3’h, 3’d. More than enough space for our two day trip. We camped in October, which was cold (35-60s) but clear and dry. I imagine it can be cloudy and misty other times of the year, since it is so high. I highly recommend taking the walking trail to the observation tower, but be prepared for a somewhat strenuous walk that feels like a lot more than .6 miles! - Esther Sumner

Location and Accessibility

Mt. Mitchell Campground is majestically situated at 2388 NC-128, Burnsville, NC 28714, USA. This address places it within Mount Mitchell State Park, near the very summit of Mount Mitchell, which at 6,684 feet, stands as the highest peak in the Eastern United States. The location itself is a primary draw, offering campers an unparalleled opportunity to experience high-elevation mountain environments.

For North Carolina residents, the accessibility of Mt. Mitchell Campground is a significant factor, despite its lofty perch. NC-128 is the primary access road that winds its way up to the summit area of Mount Mitchell State Park from the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Blue Ridge Parkway, a renowned scenic byway, connects to major interstates, making the drive from various parts of North Carolina feasible. For instance, from Asheville, it's a relatively short and incredibly scenic drive (approximately 35 miles), while from larger cities like Charlotte or Raleigh, the journey is longer but entirely manageable for a weekend or extended trip. The road to the summit, NC-128, is well-maintained, though it is a winding mountain road, and drivers should be prepared for elevation changes and curves. The campground’s elevation means that conditions can change rapidly, and visitors should be prepared for cooler temperatures and potential mist, even in summer. However, the reward of camping amongst balsam firs at such an altitude makes the journey well worth it, providing an accessible high-mountain experience unique to our state.

Services Offered
  • Designated Campsites: The campground features unique and well-maintained campsites. Specific sites like #1, #5, #6, and #9 are highlighted for their distinct characteristics (e.g., shelter from wind, views, ease of access). There are typically 9 tent-only sites available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Flush Toilets: A significant convenience for a high-elevation campground, clean and well-maintained flush toilets are available, greatly enhancing comfort.
  • Bear-Proof Storage: Large "bear bins" (approximately 4'w, 3'h, 3'd) are provided at or near campsites for secure food and trash storage, crucial for safety in this active bear habitat.
  • Potable Water: Access to clean, potable water would typically be available for campers.
  • Camp Manager/Host: An on-site camp manager or host is present, providing assistance, information, and a welcoming presence ("super friendly," "had stickers for the kids plus treats for dogs"). This personal touch is a valuable service.
  • Assistance in Emergencies: The staff goes above and beyond, as evidenced by helping campers whose "car broke down" and facilitating a "tow truck" using their phone, especially critical in areas with no cell service.
  • Information and Safety Briefings: Staff are "really good about telling us about bear safety and what's going on," indicating a commitment to visitor safety and awareness.
  • No RV Hookups (Implied): While not explicitly stated, the descriptions of tent sites, steep stairs, and the focus on a natural, high-elevation experience strongly imply that this is a tent-only campground with no RV hookups or RV-specific sites. RV camping is generally not permitted directly at this specific campground within the state park due to its nature and elevation.
