Mountain Oak Campground

22223 Big Pines Hwy, Valyermo, CA 93563, USA

4.0
Hidden gem of a campground. Across from Jackson Lake and near Big Pines/Wrightwood. Stayed for one night but wished it was longer. There are flush toilets that are clean and well maintained. Camp host is very kind, personable and helpful. We have sites 2-3 for a big group and enough space for 4 tents. Sites are well-spaces. I thought we were a little loud but walking around the camp loop, the noise stayed pretty contained. You will need a campfire permit, takes 10 minutes on the forest service website. There are spigots for running water that are technically potable, but bring a filter just in case. - Yasmeen Mughal

Mountain Oak Campground Introduce

Hello, fellow California adventurers and nature lovers! Are you seeking a refreshing mountain escape that combines the tranquility of the forest with convenient amenities and friendly service? Look no further than Mountain Oak Campground in Valyermo, CA. Often described as a "hidden gem," this campground offers a delightful balance of rustic charm and comfortable facilities, making it an ideal destination for families, groups, and individuals looking to immerse themselves in the stunning beauty of the Angeles National Forest. Imagine waking up to the crisp mountain air, surrounded by towering pines, with the serene Jackson Lake just across the road – Mountain Oak Campground offers precisely this idyllic experience for Californians seeking a memorable outdoor getaway.

Mountain Oak Campground is more than just a place to pitch a tent; it's a welcoming community nestled in a picturesque setting. Its well-spaced sites, often capable of accommodating multiple tents for larger groups, provide a sense of privacy while maintaining a friendly atmosphere. The presence of a kind and helpful camp host further enhances the experience, offering local insights and ensuring a pleasant stay. While mountain weather can be unpredictable, the overall appeal of flush toilets, bear-proof storage, and immediate access to outdoor activities makes Mountain Oak a standout choice for those who appreciate comfort without sacrificing the essence of camping. It truly offers a quintessential Southern California mountain camping experience, making it a favorite for many who return year after year.

Location and Accessibility

Mountain Oak Campground is strategically located at 22223 Big Pines Hwy, Valyermo, CA 93563, USA, placing it within the scenic Angeles National Forest. This prime location positions it directly across from Jackson Lake, offering campers immediate access to the lake's recreational opportunities. Furthermore, the campground is conveniently situated near the communities of Big Pines and Wrightwood, providing easy access to local services and attractions.

Accessibility to Mountain Oak is generally straightforward for vehicles, accommodating RVs up to 18 feet in length, as well as trailers and tents. The campground is reachable via the Big Pines Highway (County Route N4), a well-maintained road that meanders through the forest. Visitors have noted its convenience, being just a short, scenic drive from the charming town of Wrightwood (approximately 8 miles or 15 minutes away), where groceries and other services are available. While some campgrounds along highways can suffer from significant road noise, Mountain Oak Campground is often set back enough from the road (at least for some sites like Camp 5) that traffic noise is minimal or even non-existent, sometimes replaced by the soothing sounds of wind that mimic waves. A crucial aspect of accessibility for Mountain Oak, as with many areas in the Angeles National Forest, is the requirement for a specific parking pass. The "Adventure Pass" or more specifically, the "Big Pines Pass" from Mountain High Resort, is needed for parking here; the standard Angeles National Forest Adventure Pass and Interagency Passes are reportedly not honored. This information is vital for a smooth arrival, and obtaining the pass (which can often be done online or at local vendors like Mountain High Resort) is a quick process, taking about 10 minutes on the Forest Service website. This combination of convenient road access, proximity to amenities, and unique natural features makes Mountain Oak Campground a highly accessible and desirable destination for Californians.

Services Offered
  • Flush Toilets: A significant amenity at Mountain Oak Campground is the availability of clean, well-maintained flush toilets. This provides a level of comfort often sought by campers, enhancing the overall experience compared to more rustic vault toilets.

  • Potable Water Spigots: The campground offers spigots for running water, which is technically potable. However, recent reviews suggest caution and recommend bringing a filter or your own drinking water, as the host has indicated it's primarily suitable for showering and not for consumption or cooking without purification. • Bear-Proof Food Storage: Each campsite is equipped with convenient bear boxes or bear-proof food containers. This essential service helps campers safely store food and scented items, protecting both campers and local wildlife.
