Mosquito Flat Reservoir Campground

Forest Rd 609A, Challis, ID 83226, USA

4.0
RV/CAMPER BEWARE: if you have anything longer than a 24' you have to cross a creek and you will drag due to the uphill right after the crossing. The road is extremely narrow and the switchbacks are widened out but again the road is narrow and makes pulling a trailer to this reservoir dangerous. THE LAKE: is incredibly beautiful and worth a day drive or tent camping. I wish they would improve the road and creek crossing because we really wanted to get back there. We turned our 32' 5th wheel around after the creek after we dragged our back bumper in and out. - Shellie Jensen

Mosquito Flat Reservoir Campground Introduce

Hello, fellow Idaho outdoor enthusiasts! Today, we're casting our gaze toward a truly picturesque destination in our beautiful state: Mosquito Flat Reservoir Campground, located near Challis. This spot is renowned for its incredible natural beauty, offering a serene lakeside experience that captures the essence of Idaho's pristine wilderness. However, it’s also a place that demands a certain level of preparedness and the right kind of vehicle, particularly if you're planning on bringing a larger camper.

Our aim with this article is to give you a clear, honest, and comprehensive overview of Mosquito Flat Reservoir Campground. We'll dive into its stunning location and the specific challenges of accessing it, detail the limited but essential services you can expect, and highlight what makes this lake and its surroundings so special. Whether you're a seasoned tent camper, a local looking for a scenic day drive, or an RVer carefully planning your next adventure, understanding the nuances of this "incredibly beautiful" spot will ensure your visit is both safe and unforgettable. Let's explore what makes Mosquito Flat Reservoir a unique gem in the Salmon-Challis National Forest.

Location and Accessibility

Mosquito Flat Reservoir Campground is situated on Forest Road 609A, near Challis, ID 83226, USA. This location places it within the vast and scenic Salmon-Challis National Forest, offering stunning views of the East Salmon River Mountains. The lake itself is a centerpiece, described as "incredibly beautiful," providing a captivating backdrop for your outdoor activities.

However, accessibility to Mosquito Flat Reservoir Campground is a critical point that requires careful attention, especially for those with RVs or trailers. User experiences explicitly warn: "RV/CAMPER BEWARE: if you have anything longer than a 24' you have to cross a creek and you will drag due to the uphill right after the crossing." This creek crossing is a significant obstacle, and even for those under 24 feet, "the road is extremely narrow and the switchbacks are widened out but again the road is narrow and makes pulling a trailer to this reservoir dangerous." One reviewer specifically mentioned turning around their "32' 5th wheel after the creek after we dragged our back bumper in and out." This strongly suggests that "high clearance vehicles" are essential, and for RVs or trailers, anything over approximately 24 feet is likely to encounter significant difficulty, if not impossible passage.

Given these challenges, the campground is often recommended as being "worth a day drive or tent camping." The journey itself, while potentially difficult, is part of the adventure, but proper vehicle choice is paramount to avoid damage or getting stuck.

Services Offered

  • Primitive Campsites:

Mosquito Flat Reservoir Campground is a "small but spacious campground" featuring "11 campsites" and some "picnic sites on the shore of the reservoir." These are generally primitive sites, offering a basic camping experience. Some sites are located "right alongside the water," while others are "tucked into the more wooded areas across the road," providing a choice of scenery. Each campsite is typically equipped with a "picnic table and fire ring."

  • Restroom Facilities:

The campground provides "vault toilets" (also referred to as "restrooms"). While not flush toilets, these are a standard amenity in primitive Forest Service campgrounds and provide necessary sanitation.

  • No Potable Water:

It is crucial for visitors to note that there is "no potable water" available at Mosquito Flat Reservoir Campground. Campers must bring all their own drinking and cooking water, or be prepared with purification methods if sourcing from the reservoir (which is not typically recommended for drinking without treatment).

  • No RV Hookups or Dump Station:

For RV users, it's important to understand that there are "no RV hookups or dump stations available at this campground." This reinforces the primitive nature of the site and the need for self-contained RVs or preparedness to manage waste off-site.

  • First-Come, First-Served Basis:

Like many primitive campgrounds in National Forests, campsites are available on a "first-come, first-served basis," meaning "reservations...are not accepted." This requires flexibility in travel plans, especially during peak seasons.

  • Boat Ramp Access:

A "boat ramp" is available on the east side of the reservoir, allowing for non-motorized boating activities. This is a significant amenity for those who enjoy kayaking, canoeing, or paddleboarding on the lake. The Idaho Fish and Game also lists a boat ramp at the reservoir.

Features / Highlights

  • Stunning Lake Scenery:

The most compelling feature of Mosquito Flat Reservoir Campground is the lake itself, described as "incredibly beautiful." Its pristine waters and scenic mountain backdrop create a truly captivating environment, perfect for photography and relaxation.

  • Excellent Fishing Opportunities:

The reservoir is a popular spot for fishing. "Fish were jumping pretty good on our ride thru," indicating a healthy fish population. The Idaho Fish and Game regularly stocks "rainbow trout" in the reservoir, and "brook trout and bull trout are stocked in the water" as well. This makes it an ideal destination for anglers looking to cast a line.

  • Peaceful Tent Camping:

Given the challenging access for larger RVs, the campground lends itself perfectly to tent camping. This allows visitors to truly immerse themselves in the quiet solitude of the area, enjoying the sounds of nature and the beauty of the lake without the hum of generators or large vehicles.

  • Wildlife Viewing:

Being within the Salmon-Challis National Forest, the area offers good opportunities for "wildlife viewing activities." Keep an eye out for local fauna while you're enjoying the tranquility of the campground.

  • Access to Hiking Trails:

Nearby, the "Yankee Fork Trail #147 provides access to the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness," offering opportunities for hiking and exploring the vast wilderness area. This makes the campground a good base for day hikes into the surrounding mountains.
