Location and Accessibility
McMillan Campground is conveniently situated off of NM-15, in the heart of the Gila National Forest, just a short drive from Silver City, New Mexico. Its location places it in a prime spot for exploring the region's famous trails and natural attractions. The campground is approximately one mile up the road from the larger Cherry Creek Campground, offering a more secluded and intimate alternative. While the address is listed as NM-15, Silver City, NM 88061, USA, it is important for visitors to be aware of the specific road conditions. The approach to the campground involves a few creek crossings. While these are typically manageable, they can become a challenge when the water levels rise, and a posted sign advises against bringing in trailers for this very reason. This makes it an ideal spot for tent campers or RVs that are capable of handling these conditions.
The drive to the campground itself is part of the adventure, winding through a beautiful forested landscape. Its close proximity to Silver City means that you are never too far from civilization if you need to resupply, grab a meal, or simply want to explore the town's unique character. This accessibility makes it a convenient choice for both weekend trips and longer vacations. The elevation of the area means cooler temperatures, especially in the summer, providing a welcome respite from the heat of the lower elevations. The well-marked paths leading into the campground make it relatively easy to find, provided you pay attention to the signs.
For those traveling in an RV, it is crucial to heed the warning about the creek crossings to ensure a safe and stress-free journey. However, for smaller vehicles and tent campers, the journey is straightforward. The physical address is a useful starting point for GPS, but keeping an eye out for local signage is always recommended when traveling in more rural parts of New Mexico.

What is Worth Choosing
McMillan Campground is a truly unique destination for those who value tranquility and a genuine connection with nature. Its small scale is its greatest asset, ensuring that you will not be overwhelmed by large crowds or excessive noise. Unlike bigger, more commercial campgrounds, McMillan offers a serene and personal experience. This is a place where you can hear the sounds of the forest, not the sounds of your neighbors. The intimate setting, combined with essential amenities like running water and restrooms, strikes a perfect balance between roughing it and having basic comforts. For anyone in New Mexico looking for a no-frills, peaceful camping spot, McMillan is an excellent choice.
One of the most compelling reasons to choose McMillan is its dog-friendly policy and the comfortable, soft trails that make it perfect for walking your pets. This is a major plus for many campers who want to include their furry family members in their outdoor adventures. The natural beauty of the surrounding Gila National Forest provides a stunning backdrop for all activities, from hiking and bird watching to simply relaxing by the fire. The proximity to the Gila National Forest's vast trail system means endless opportunities for exploration.
Furthermore, the on-site amenities, including fire rings and trash facilities, demonstrate a commitment to both camper convenience and environmental responsibility. This allows you to focus on enjoying your trip rather than worrying about the practicalities. The warning about the creek crossings, while important to note for trailer owners, also contributes to the campground's unique, slightly rugged character. It ensures that those who choose to visit are seeking a specific type of authentic outdoor experience.
For those who have previously found larger campgrounds to be too busy or impersonal, McMillan Campground is a breath of fresh air. It caters to a different kind of camper—one who is looking for solitude, quiet reflection, and a deep appreciation for the natural world. Its location, a little bit off the beaten path, guarantees a more peaceful stay, allowing you to fully decompress and recharge. This is what truly sets McMillan Campground apart as a hidden gem in New Mexico's camping landscape.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I liked the small campground, on 3 camping spots, really. Like the pine needle trail paths. Soft on my small dog's feet.
May 12 · Robert BentleySmall, three-table campground with trash, toilet, and fire rings, trails, and will trap you when the creek rises. A mile up the road from Cherry Creek campground, and a sign is posted advising against bringing in trailers due to the creek crossings.
May 16 · David ShafferNice area, has built in porta potty
June 09 · tina bissetteA mile upstream from Cherry Creek, Mac became another popular campground to risk getting trapped in. Have camped here several times.
January 13 · de StuffilatorOur favorite place to go. We usually have a large group camp of 4 to 8 tents & 4 canopies set up. Very nice and clean area. Clean vault restrooms, trash cans available. Picnic and firepits are available. Beautiful scenery, but right next to the road which stays busy day and night. Small creek flows during monsoons and is subject to flash flooding. Tent camping only. We are planning to head that way in a couple weeks. Hoping to get in because it is a first come first serve basis.
