McCormack Lake Campground Introduce
Welcome, fellow Missourians! Are you looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and truly reconnect with nature? Look no further than McCormack Lake Campground, a hidden gem nestled within the breathtaking Mark Twain National Forest. If you appreciate the simplicity of primitive camping, the tranquility of clear waters, and the allure of star-filled nights, McCormack Lake Campground might just be your next favorite outdoor destination. This article will guide you through what makes this campground a unique and appealing option for locals seeking an authentic outdoor experience.
McCormack Lake Campground offers a distinct "dispersed camping with a plan" feel, providing a serene and spacious environment for campers. It’s designed for those who appreciate a more rugged, back-to-basics approach to camping, focusing on natural beauty and peaceful solitude. Whether you're an experienced primitive camper or looking to try a truly off-grid experience, McCormack Lake provides the ideal setting to unwind and immerse yourself in the natural wonders of Missouri.
McCormack Lake Campground is situated in Woodside, Missouri, easily identifiable by its address: RJFX+4F, Woodside, MO 65438, USA. This location places it firmly within the expansive and picturesque Mark Twain National Forest, a true treasure for outdoor enthusiasts in our state. While the campground offers a sense of remote wilderness, it is accessible by vehicle, though the campsites themselves are designed to feel more like backcountry backpacking sites once you arrive. The drive-in access makes it convenient for bringing your gear, but the layout encourages a feeling of being truly immersed in nature.
One of the key aspects of its location is its deep integration with the natural environment. Being within the national forest means you're surrounded by dense woodlands, offering a habitat for diverse wildlife and endless opportunities for exploration. For those who enjoy extended treks, one of the hiking trails at McCormack Lake directly connects to the renowned Ozark Trail, opening up possibilities for longer backpacking adventures right from your campsite. This connectivity is a major draw for hikers and backpackers seeking to explore some of Missouri's most scenic routes.
It's important to set expectations regarding connectivity at McCormack Lake. Visitors consistently report zero cell service for major carriers like AT&T, and similar experiences are noted for other providers. For many, this is a significant advantage, as it ensures a complete disconnect from digital distractions, allowing for a truly immersive and peaceful outdoor experience. If your goal is to unplug and enjoy uninterrupted nature, this lack of connectivity is a feature, not a bug.

McCormack Lake operates on a strict "pack it in, pack it out" policy, emphasizing personal responsibility for waste. This helps maintain the pristine condition of the campground and its natural surroundings.
Parking Spots: While the campsites offer a backcountry feel, there are fairly level parking spots available, making it easier to park your vehicle before accessing your site.

Beautiful Lake: The namesake McCormack Lake is a significant highlight, offering stunning views and a clear water body. While there may be some water vegetation, the clarity of the water adds to the scenic beauty of the area.
Marked Hiking Trails: The campground boasts well-marked trails through the surrounding forest, providing opportunities for leisurely walks or more strenuous hikes. One of these trails conveniently connects directly to the extensive Ozark Trail, appealing to long-distance hikers.
Dispersed Camping Feel: With only six spacious sites, the campground provides a sense of seclusion and privacy, resembling a more dispersed camping experience rather than a crowded, traditional campground.
Well-Maintained Grounds: Despite being primitive, visitors often note that the grass is nicely mowed and the parking spots are reasonably level, indicating attention to maintaining the basic infrastructure.
Wildlife Viewing Opportunities: Being located within Mark Twain National Forest, the campground is a prime spot for observing local wildlife in their natural habitat.
Dedicated Day Use Area: On the opposite side of the lake, there is a separate day-use area equipped with additional picnic tables and BBQ pits, offering another option for visitors not staying overnight or those looking for a different scenic spot for a meal.

McCormack Lake Campground Reviews
This is basically dispersed camping with a plan. 6 spacious sites which have fire rings with fold-over grates, "lantern posts" with two hooks, and nice picnic tables. The nearby toilet was an open air with a latching privacy fence vault toilet. A little way off is a day use area with more modern and very clean vault toilets. The lake is beautiful. And there are nice marked trails through the forest. (Mark Twain National Forest)
Apr 10, 2024 · Nancy SkubalThis is an awesome primitive campground. Don't expect much. There is no trash service so PLEASE pack out your trash. I filled a grocery bag full of cans that someone left in the fire pit. Steel does not burn. PACK IT IN PACK IT OUT. You can drive in but the campsites are more like backcountry backpacking sites. The grass was nicely mowed and the parking spots were fairly level. Some more than others. They do have a fire ring, lamp post and a picnic table. that is about it. It is nice and quiet here and very dark ( very little light pollution). The water is very clear although there is a fair amount of water vegetation so fishing might be a challenge. There are only 6 campsites here and one of the hiking trails does connect to the Ozark trail. If you have to have cell service this is not the place for you. there were ZERO bars for AT&T and from other reviews I have seen similar for other carriers. If you are wanting to disconnect this IS the spot. There is a separate day use area on the other side of the lake that has some picnic tables and BBQ pit.
Jul 02, 2024 · Michael GorzelBeautiful clear lake with a gorgeous dam. Stocked lake. Non motorized boats only, several primate campsites with picnic tables and fire pits.
May 21, 2018 · Firefly 808Great primitive campground on a lake. It has a connector to the Ozark Trail so great stopping point if you are hiking it and need a campground with a firepit to pitch a tent
May 26, 2019 · Mark TMy family has spent Labor Day weekends here for over 67 years. Wonderful place, well worth a visit!
