Matchless Campground provides a foundational set of services and amenities designed for a rustic yet comfortable camping experience at high altitude. While it differs from campgrounds with full hookups, it excels in offering essential facilities that cater to the needs of its unique setup. Based on direct camper reviews and public information, here are the services and amenities available:

  • Campsites: The campground offers 20 individual campsites. These sites are a "different style," often described as having parallel parking for RVs along the edge of a parking lot, with beautifully wooded tent sites overlooking the lake just below these parking spots. This unique design accommodates both tents and larger recreational vehicles, including those with slide-outs.
  • No Hookups: It's crucial to note that Matchless Campground operates as a primitive campground, meaning there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available at the individual sites. Campers must be self-sufficient regarding power and water.
  • Potable Water: While historically available, a crucial update for 2025 states: Water will NOT be available in this campground in 2025. Campers must bring enough water for all their needs, including fully extinguishing campfires.
  • Vault Toilets: Clean vault toilets are provided for restrooms. Reviewers consistently mention the cleanliness of these facilities, which is a significant positive for a campground of this style.
  • Picnic Tables & Fire Rings: Each campsite includes a picnic table and a fire ring or grill, perfect for preparing meals and enjoying campfires (fire restrictions permitting).
  • First-Come, First-Served Basis: The majority, if not all, of the sites at Matchless Campground operate on a first-come, first-served basis. This means visitors must physically arrive at the campground to claim a site, which can be busy, especially on weekends.
  • Camp Host: A camp host is typically on-site. They play a vital role in maintaining the campground, assisting campers, and providing local information. Some reviews highlight helpful camp hosts.
  • Trash Disposal: Dumpsters or designated trash receptacles are usually available for waste disposal, promoting cleanliness within the campground.
  • Pet-Friendly: Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a leash at all times, adhering to common campground regulations for safety and courtesy.
  • Fee Structure: The standard nightly fee is $26.00 per night per site, which typically includes two vehicles. A third vehicle may incur an additional $11 per night. RVs and ATV/boat trailers count as one vehicle. A discounted rate of $13.00 per night is available for those with an America the Beautiful Pass. Fees are payable via cash, check, or money order through a self-servicing fee tube.

Matchless Campground stands out due to several unique features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for campers, particularly those who prioritize lake access and a more rustic experience. Here’s what makes it special:

  • Unbeatable Lake Access: Situated directly on Turquoise Lake, the campground offers immediate and convenient access to the water. This is a significant draw for boaters and kayakers, as it's adjacent to a boat ramp and parking area.
  • Stunning Views and Sunsets: Campers consistently rave about the "beautifully wooded sites overlooking the lake" and the "amazing sunsets down by the lake." The high-altitude setting provides truly spectacular vistas.
  • Unique Layout for RVs and Tents: Its "different style" of a parking lot with parallel RV spots and adjacent wooded tent sites below allows for easy vehicle access while still providing a natural camping feel. This design is "well thought out for lakeside camping" and can accommodate "larger recreational vehicles."
  • Clean Facilities: Despite being a primitive campground with vault toilets, reviewers repeatedly praise the "clean bathrooms" and overall cleanliness of the area, ensuring a comfortable experience.
  • Connects to Turquoise Lake Trail: An "awesome bike and walking trail goes around the lake and connects campgrounds," providing direct access from Matchless for hikers, bikers, and those seeking scenic strolls. This trail is described as "stunning!"
  • Affordability with Passes: The significant discount for America the Beautiful Pass holders makes it a very affordable option for those with federal park passes, offering excellent value for a lakeside spot.
  • Peaceful Atmosphere (especially weekdays): While weekends can be busy, the campground offers "serene silence" and a relatively quiet environment, particularly on weekdays, allowing for a truly peaceful retreat.
  • Ample Shade: Many sites are located within a shaded lodgepole pine forest, providing welcome relief from the sun, especially during warmer summer days.
  • First-Come, First-Served Adventure: For those who enjoy the spontaneity of securing a site upon arrival, Matchless offers this classic camping experience. Reviewers mention finding spots even on busy days if arriving at opportune times.
