Amazing stay!!! My partner were here for a little over a month on travel medical jobs, and we couldn’t have found a better place to stay. You are within walking distance of everything in town (10 minutes or so to the opposite side), including ice cream, bike rentals, and the Greenbriar Trail. Deer are wandering most mornings. Such a beautiful outdoor space.Everything worked as expected. Brian is a kind, responsive host. Would highly recommend! - Amy Wysong

Marlinton Creek and Trail Campground Introduce

Introduction / Overview

For West Virginians looking for a seamless blend of outdoor adventure and small-town charm, Marlinton Creek and Trail Campground offers an exceptional basecamp right in the heart of Pocahontas County. This isn't just another place to park your RV or pitch your tent; it's a strategically located haven designed to provide comfort and convenience while immersing you in the natural beauty and local culture of Marlinton. Praised by visitors for its welcoming atmosphere and responsive host, Brian, this campground is a newer, privately-owned gem with a focus on providing full hookup sites for a hassle-free stay. Whether you're a seasoned RVer, a cycling enthusiast ready to tackle the Greenbrier River Trail, or a family eager to explore a charming West Virginia town, Marlinton Creek and Trail Campground promises an "amazing stay" where everything works as expected, and you feel right at home.

It's an intimate setting, reportedly with just six sites, fanned out on a three-acre field, giving each guest a sense of space and tranquility while still being incredibly close to all that Marlinton has to offer. Deer often wander through the outdoor space in the mornings, adding to the picturesque and natural ambiance. This campground truly bridges the gap between rugged outdoor pursuits and the simple pleasures of a quaint Appalachian town, making it an ideal choice for locals seeking both relaxation and adventure.

Location and Accessibility

Marlinton Creek and Trail Campground boasts an incredibly advantageous location at 1121 3rd Ave, Marlinton, WV 24954, USA. What makes this address particularly appealing to West Virginia locals is its direct and easy accessibility, combined with its proximity to key attractions. Marlinton is a vibrant small town nestled in Pocahontas County, a region often referred to as "Nature's Mountain Playground" due to its abundant outdoor opportunities.

A standout feature of this campground's location is its direct adjacency to the Greenbrier River Trail. This 78-mile-long rail trail, celebrated as one of the nation's best, offers endless possibilities for biking, hiking, and even horseback riding through stunning scenic landscapes. Campers can literally step out of their site and onto the trail. Furthermore, the campground is within easy walking distance—about a 10-minute stroll—to "everything in town." This means convenient access to Marlinton's local amenities, including charming eateries, an ice cream shop (a must-visit for families!), bike rentals, and the historic Marlinton Railroad Depot. Guests can enjoy the small-town charm, grab groceries, or find a cozy spot for coffee without needing to drive.

While the reviews mention a lack of cellular service for some providers (like Verizon and TV reception), this is common in some of West Virginia's more pristine natural areas and can be seen as an opportunity to truly disconnect. However, some businesses in town do offer Wi-Fi if needed. The ease of backing a 35' trailer and a 23' truck into site #6 suggests that the sites are spacious and well-laid out, ensuring comfortable accessibility for various rig sizes. The convenience of being able to walk to town, access the Greenbrier River Trail, and enjoy the surrounding outdoor space makes this location truly special for Virginians looking for a hassle-free and enriching camping experience.

Services Offered
  • Full Hookup RV Sites: The campground provides full hookups at each site, including 50, 30, and 20 amp electric, water, and sewer connections. This is a significant convenience, particularly for RV campers.
  • Spacious Sites: Reviews indicate that the sites, such as #6, are generously sized and easy to back into, accommodating large trailers (e.g., 35' trailer and 23' truck).
  • Picnic Tables: Each site comes with a picnic table, perfect for outdoor dining and meal preparation.
  • Fire Rings: Campers will find a fire ring at their site, designed to be safely far enough away from the camper to prevent issues, allowing for enjoyable campfires.
  • Mowed Sites: The campground maintains nicely mowed sites, contributing to a tidy and pleasant environment.
  • Responsive Host: Brian, the host, is consistently praised as kind and responsive, ensuring that guests' needs are met and providing assistance as required.
  • Pet-Friendly: While not explicitly stated in all reviews, similar campgrounds are often pet-friendly, allowing furry family members to join the adventure. It's always best to confirm directly.

It's important to note based on reviews that the campground does not currently offer some amenities typically found at larger, more resort-style campgrounds, such as:

  • No Bath House: There are no public bath houses with restrooms or showers on site, so campers should be self-contained or prepared.
  • No Playground: Families with small children should be aware there is no dedicated playground area.
  • No Trash Dumpster: Campers are responsible for managing and removing their own trash, as a dumpster is not provided on site.

These factors highlight the campground's focus on essential hookups and direct access to local attractions, rather than extensive on-site facilities, catering to those who prefer simplicity and convenience to nearby amenities.

Features / Highlights
  • Direct Access to Greenbrier River Trail: This is arguably the top highlight. The campground is literally "right by the Greenbrier River Trail," an 78-mile-long rail trail renowned for biking, hiking, and exploring West Virginia's scenic beauty. Campers can easily walk or bike directly onto the trail.
  • Walkable to Downtown Marlinton: Enjoy the convenience of walking to "everything in town" within approximately 10 minutes. This includes local shops, restaurants, bike rentals, and the charming Marlinton Railroad Depot.
  • Full Hookup Convenience: All sites come with essential full hookups (50/30/20 amp electric, water, and sewer), making it incredibly convenient for RV and trailer campers who prefer minimal fuss.
  • Peaceful Riverside Setting (Knapp's Creek): The campground "butts up against the lovely Knapp Creek" which flows into the Greenbrier River, offering serene sounds and a peaceful atmosphere. Knapp's Creek is also known for excellent trout fishing.
  • Wildlife Sightings: Deer are frequently seen "wandering most mornings" around the campground, providing a delightful connection with local wildlife.
  • Responsive and Friendly Host: Brian, the owner, is highlighted in reviews as "kind, responsive," and "friendly and accommodating," ensuring a positive and supportive camping experience.
  • Spacious and Well-Maintained Sites: Reviews praise the "plenty of room" for large trailers and trucks, with sites being "mowed nicely" and having "great fire rings."
  • Proximity to Local Charm: Being in Marlinton means easy access to a "neat little town" with its ice cream shops, historic train station, and local community vibe, offering more than just a typical wilderness camping trip.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a private, smaller campground, Marlinton Creek and Trail Campground does not typically publicize large-scale, ongoing promotions in the same way larger commercial chains might. The value proposition here is built more on its unique location, the quality of its full hookup sites, and the personalized service provided by its host, Brian.

Based on customer reviews, the primary "offer" is the exceptional convenience and comfortable stay provided. For instance, knowing you have guaranteed full hookups (electric, water, sewer) right on the Greenbrier River Trail, combined with walkable access to a charming town, is a significant benefit in itself for many campers.

While no specific discount codes or seasonal sales are mentioned in the provided information, it is always a good practice for prospective campers to directly contact the campground. Small businesses often have informal offers for longer stays, repeat customers, or during off-peak seasons that may not be widely advertised. You can inquire about current nightly rates and any potential deals when you call to check availability. Given the positive feedback on the host's responsiveness, a direct conversation is likely the best way to uncover any unadvertised advantages or to learn about the best times to visit for specific experiences.

  • Mobile Phone: +1 304-646-1832

Direct communication will also allow you to confirm any details regarding the sites, such as suitability for your specific RV or trailer size, and to ask about any amenities or policies not explicitly mentioned, like pet rules or trash disposal guidelines.
