Mackinaw Campground is located at 13496 Mackinaw Hwy, Mackinaw City, MI 49701, USA. This places it along a key thoroughfare leading into Mackinaw City, making it highly accessible for travelers. Mackinaw City itself is at the very northern tip of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, acting as a crucial hub for those venturing to Mackinac Island, the Upper Peninsula, or simply exploring the beautiful northern Michigan coastline.
The accessibility of Mackinaw Campground is a significant convenience. Its location directly on Mackinaw Highway (US-23) means it's easy to spot and pull into, which is especially beneficial for RVers or those arriving late. While it might not boast waterfront views like some other local campgrounds, its proximity to downtown Mackinaw City is a major advantage. Essential services, including gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, and the Mackinac Island ferry docks, are all just a short drive away.
This campground serves as an excellent jumping-off point for exploring the myriad attractions in the area. From taking a ferry to historic Mackinac Island for a day of horse-drawn carriage tours and famous fudge, to visiting Colonial Michilimackinac and the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse, everything is within easy reach. The strategic location allows campers to enjoy the outdoor experience without feeling isolated from the vibrant tourist attractions and necessities of Mackinaw City. Its straightforward access, combined with its central position for regional exploration, makes it a very practical choice for campers traversing Michigan.
Mackinaw Campground operates on a unique "honor system" for check-in, and its services are focused on providing clean, basic necessities for campers. It's a no-frills approach that emphasizes efficiency and affordability. Here's what you can expect:
- First-Come, First-Served Check-in: The campground operates on a self-check-in, first-come, first-served basis. Campers pick up an envelope, find an available site, fill out the necessary information, and deposit payment in a slot. This system allows for great flexibility, especially for those arriving without reservations or outside of typical office hours.
- Campsites: The campground offers both tent sites and hookup sites. Reviewers consistently note that the campsites are "nice and flat" and "super clean," providing a comfortable base for setting up.
- Water and Electric Hookups: Hookup sites are available, typically offering water and electric connections (rates vary, with water/electric sites reportedly around $40 a night). These sites are also noted for being "very clean and very flat."
- Dump Station: A dump station is available on-site for those with water/electric sites, allowing for convenient waste disposal.
- Pit Toilets / Vault Toilets: The campground provides pit toilets (also known as vault toilets). Critically, reviewers emphasize that these facilities are "extremely clean," which is a significant positive for this type of amenity.
- Firewood Availability: A generous amount of firewood is available for purchase, typically for a very reasonable price (e.g., $10 for a large quantity), making it easy to enjoy campfires.
- Affordable Rates: Compared to many other campgrounds in the popular Mackinaw City area, Mackinaw Campground offers very competitive and affordable rates, particularly for tent sites (reportedly around $20 a night).
It's important to note what is generally *not* offered based on reviews: there is no shower house, and the pit toilets are the primary restroom facilities. While this might be a consideration for some, those accustomed to more rustic or basic camping experiences will likely find these services perfectly adequate and well-maintained.
Mackinaw Campground, despite its no-frills philosophy, offers several key features and highlights that are highly appreciated by its visitors:
- Exceptional Cleanliness: This is a recurring highlight in customer reviews. Both the campsites themselves and the pit toilets are consistently described as "super clean" and "extremely clean." This dedication to cleanliness, particularly for vault toilets, sets it apart and significantly enhances the camping experience.
- User-Friendly Honor System: The first-come, first-served, self-check-in "honor system" is a major feature. It provides unparalleled convenience and flexibility, allowing campers to arrive at their leisure, find a spot, and settle in without the need for traditional office hours or prior bookings. This "piece of cake" process is highly valued by guests.
- Flat and Well-Maintained Sites: Reviewers repeatedly praise the flatness and cleanliness of both the tent and hookup sites. Flat sites are crucial for comfortable RV parking and tent pitching, contributing to an easy setup.
- Value for Money: The campground is noted for being "very affordable" and providing excellent value, especially given its prime location in a popular tourist area like Mackinaw City. For campers on a budget, this is a significant advantage.
- Abundant Firewood: The availability of a large amount of firewood for a low price is a definite highlight, enabling campers to easily enjoy campfires, a quintessential part of the camping experience.
- Quiet Atmosphere: While not explicitly stated in all reviews, the overall tone of feedback suggests a relatively quiet and peaceful environment, conducive to relaxation after a day of exploring.
These features combine to create a reliable and welcoming environment for campers who appreciate simplicity, cleanliness, and value, making it a great option for an overnight stop or a base camp.

Mackinaw Campground Reviews
Very nice little campground. Honor system which I like, a ton of firewood for $10 is available, campsites were nice and flat super clean, The pit toilets were also extremely clean. Only complaint was that the hand sanitizer and one of them was out. I would definitely stay here again. Hook up sites are also available and they were also very clean and very flat.
Sep 26, 2024 · M JThis is not meant to be a 5 star campground. It fit my needs perfectly. Just needed a 1 night stay to dry camp, and for $20 for a tent site that can’t be beat in this location. Hell, I’ve paid more to park in a parking garage before. I believe for water and electric site it’s $40 a night. First come, first served you check yourself in. Just pickup an envelope find you a site, fill out the envelope and drop it in the slot. Piece of cake. It does have a dump station if you pay for water/electric site. No shower house, and vault toilets. Would definitely stay here again if the need arises.
Aug 02, 2024 · Douglas StoutThere's no phone number or website, and nobody is in the office on-site. Self-register only. There's firewood provided at $10/rack, which is a better deal than the $5 bundles sold roadside in the area. Tent sites aren't numbered and are located along the roadside. RV sites have electric and water, and there are vault toilets for tent campers. KOA was full, and we asked about this campsite, which they gave a grimace and shrug about. Quiet time starts at 9 pm, so try to get there and set up before then. There is a host site and phone number posted to reach them in case of any emergencies, but I didn't see anyone outside of their rv or tent. It's definitely better than sleeping in your car if the other campgrounds are full, but that's about all I can say. A handful of trees were cut down, so if you're in a tent, it will get hot in the morning since there's no shade
Jul 29, 2024 · Rivka Ballan-HoryschukClean and well maintained park that had water and electricity at the rv sites with a separate dump station. No frills but large lots, wood on site, and close to it all. Fire pit at each site and a picnic table, too. We felt safe there, too. Toilet is basic, no laundry or showers.
Aug 08, 2023 · Brigit KowalczykThis place is awesome! Totally affordable and has an honor system self-registration and commissary fridge that has their own chicken and even duck eggs! Owners are really nice. Water and electric hook up for $20/day. Wow! Cute rock circle fire pits and firewood bundles only $3!!! Quiet and peaceful with some large trees. Nice picnic tables at each site too. Love this place and the concept.
