I have been going here since I was a kid so my review may be slightly partial :)If you want to camp, remember it is only seasonally open. If it is closed you can still walk in, around, and down the river! The main campground is flat, shaded, and great all around for families and a variety of vehicle sizes. Across the street from the main campground is an alternative with more elevation changes but may require 4 wheel or All wheel drive.Recently I went back to experience the rock water slides which is about a 15 minute walk down stream from both campgrounds. Go in early October when the water is lower so that you can slide down the river rock without getting pushed too far. Just beyond those slides is a waterfall and swimming pools(if you can trek the hike down/around).If you like rare plants, see if you can find a Snow Plant in May.Have fun and remember your experience for decades! - Skylar Hayes

Lower Peppermint Campground is strategically located within the scenic expanse of Sequoia National Forest, specifically at Forest Rte 22S82, Springville, CA 93265, USA. This address places it conveniently within reach for many Californians, offering a relatively accessible drive into a truly wild and serene environment. The drive itself is part of the experience, winding through picturesque landscapes that prepare you for the natural beauty awaiting your arrival.

It's important to note that while the campground offers a feeling of seclusion, it remains connected enough for practical purposes. However, due to its natural setting, cellular service may be limited, encouraging visitors to truly disconnect and embrace their surroundings. Accessibility to the campground itself is generally good, with the main camping area being flat and accommodating a variety of vehicle sizes, including RVs and trailers. For those seeking a more adventurous spot, an alternative area across the street presents more elevation changes, potentially requiring a 4-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicle, particularly during certain conditions. Services Offered

  • Vault Toilets: Embracing its rustic nature, Lower Peppermint Campground provides essential amenities, including vault toilets. While basic, these facilities are well-maintained and serve their purpose for short to medium stays, contributing to the authentic camping experience.
  • Seasonal Operation: It is crucial for prospective visitors to remember that Lower Peppermint Campground operates seasonally. This means it is open during specific periods of the year, typically aligning with favorable weather conditions. Even when the main campground is closed, visitors can often still access the surrounding areas for walking and exploring the river, though camping facilities will not be available.
  • Accessible Main Campground: The primary camping area is characterized by its flat terrain and abundant shade. This makes it an excellent choice for families with young children or those who prefer easier setup and navigation around their campsite. Its spaciousness also accommodates a variety of vehicle sizes, from passenger cars to larger recreational vehicles.
  • Alternative Camping Area (with elevation): For the more adventurous or those seeking a greater sense of wilderness, an alternative camping area is available across the street from the main site. This area features more significant elevation changes and may require vehicles with 4-wheel or all-wheel drive capabilities, especially depending on ground conditions.

Features / Highlights

  • Rock Water Slides: One of the most thrilling and unique attractions near Lower Peppermint Campground is the natural rock water slides. Located approximately a 15-minute walk downstream from both camping areas, these natural formations offer an exhilarating experience. Visitors can slide down the smooth river rocks into refreshing pools. For the best and safest experience, it is highly recommended to visit in early October when water levels are typically lower, allowing for a more controlled slide without being pushed too far by strong currents.
  • Waterfall and Swimming Pools: Just beyond the rock water slides, for those willing to trek a bit further, lies a beautiful waterfall and additional swimming pools. This offers a fantastic opportunity for a more extended hike and a chance to discover more secluded natural beauty. The effort of the hike is well rewarded by the stunning views and refreshing dips.

This striking, bright red, non-photosynthetic plant is a rare sight and adds an element of discovery to your visit, showcasing the diverse flora of the region.
  • Shaded and Flat Campsites: The main campground is celebrated for its predominantly flat and well-shaded campsites. This provides a comfortable and pleasant environment for campers, protecting them from direct sun exposure and offering a sense of privacy amidst the trees. The flat terrain makes setting up tents or parking RVs considerably easier.
  • River Access: Both campgrounds offer excellent access to the river. This allows for various water-based activities such as fishing, wading, or simply enjoying the peaceful sounds of flowing water. The proximity to the river enhances the overall camping experience, providing a constant source of natural beauty and recreation.
