It's a testament to local community support and ingenuity. The London Primitive Trailside Camp Area is uniquely located directly on the Prairie Grass Trail in London, OH 43140, USA. This direct trailside access is a significant part of its appeal, particularly for cyclists, long-distance hikers, and anyone utilizing Ohio's extensive network of rail trails. Its position makes it relatively accessible from various parts of Ohio, especially for those coming from Columbus or Dayton metropolitan areas.

Despite its "primitive" designation, the London Primitive Trailside Camp Area provides a surprising array of services and amenities that greatly enhance the camping experience, especially considering it operates largely on a donation basis.
- Elevated Tent Pads: The campsite features two elevated, wooden tent pads. These raised platforms provide a flat, dry surface for pitching tents, protecting them from ground moisture and offering a more comfortable sleep.
- Ground Pads: In addition to the elevated pads, there are three ground pads available, providing more traditional tent pitching options.
- Hammock Area: A designated area for hanging hammocks caters to those who prefer this comfortable and minimalist sleeping arrangement.
- Water Access: Potable water is available on-site, a crucial amenity for any camper and particularly appreciated on a trailside stop.
- Warm Water Outdoor Shower: A unique and highly praised feature is the outdoor "shower" with warm water, accessible via a sprayer. This is an unexpected luxury at a primitive site and incredibly refreshing for weary travelers.
- Full Toilets: The campsite boasts full, flushable toilets, a significant upgrade from typical pit toilets found at many primitive or even some state park campgrounds.
- Wi-Fi Access: High-speed Wi-Fi is available, requiring registration with local authorities (often the police department) to receive the password and bathroom code. This allows campers to stay connected, plan their next leg of the journey, or simply unwind with some digital entertainment.
- Pavilion with Picnic Tables: A covered pavilion equipped with picnic tables provides a communal gathering space, perfect for eating, socializing, or seeking shelter from the elements.
- Donation-Based System: While highly functional, the campsite operates on a donation basis, making it an incredibly affordable option for travelers.

- Exceptional Value: Operating on a donation basis, the camp offers an incredible value for the amenities provided. As one review noted, similar services elsewhere might cost a significant amount. This makes it an incredibly budget-friendly option for long-distance cyclists and campers.
- Trailside Convenience: Its direct location on the Prairie Grass Trail is unparalleled for cyclists and hikers. It eliminates the need for detours, making it a perfectly integrated stop on a multi-day trek.
- Unexpected Comforts: The inclusion of warm water for the shower, full flush toilets, and Wi-Fi goes far beyond the typical expectations for a "primitive" site. These features significantly enhance the comfort level, particularly after a long day on the trail.
- Proximity to Town Amenities: Despite its tranquil setting, the campsite is just a short distance from downtown London. This means campers have easy access to essential services like a Family Dollar store for supplies, various fast-food restaurants, and even a local bakery for coffee and treats, adding immense practicality to the stay.
- Security and Monitoring: The fact that local police monitor the site and require registration for codes provides an added layer of security and peace of mind for campers.
- Small, Intimate Setting: With a limited number of pads and a specific focus, the campsite maintains a cozy, less crowded atmosphere compared to larger, more commercial campgrounds.

For direct inquiries and to obtain the Wi-Fi password and bathroom code (which is often handled by local authorities for security purposes), it's best to consult local information sources or the London Police Department if no dedicated contact is listed on site.

London Primitive Trailside Camp Area Reviews
Super nice site! 2 elevated pads, 3 ground pads, a hammock area, water, separate warm water for the outdoor 'shower' (sprayer and it works) and full toilets. It is also near a Family Dollar as well as places to eat.
Jun 14, 2024 · Lewis NordanThis place is awsome. Donations accepted, a rustic trail washing station, toilets, three tent platforms, wifi and a pavillion with picnic tables. We just paid $37 for these services down the road 2 nights ago! The police monitor and ask that you register to receive wifi password and bathroom code. The town has an amazing bakery with coffee and friendly customer service. There are plenty of fast food joints and I am happy to support any and all of them in return for providing us with this service! Thank you London!
Jun 24, 2025 · Craig CasselGreat resting spot for bikers. Nice benches plus covered seating area. Good water supply and nice clean bathroom. Very nice tenting area under shade trees. Close to town. Thank you Friends of Madison County trails, we'll done.
Jul 12, 2018 · Russ MusselmanThis place is laid on nice. If every trailhead had one of these (or one every 60 miles or so), I would spend more time on the trail and pack less gear for sustainment. Please read the rules and check in before you set up. It'll save you a lot of heartache at night for when you need the code to the bathroom.About the shower point... Read the instructions. While I figured it out easy enough, you may not. Also, the shower pump handle broke while I was using it. Let me reiterate that I did not break the shower pump. The handle that was already bent had finally given up the ghost. It just happened to be while I was using it. I'll be a sport and throw $20 in the donation box. This is out of respect and appreciation for the place and not out of guilt.I'm sorry about the shower pump. Okay?
Oct 09, 2024 · Matt MarzulaNot a quiet place until after 10 PM. But absolutely lovely place to bikepack to for camping
