Little Camas Reservoir Campground

Campground ★4.0

Forest Rd 160E, Mountain Home, ID 83647, USA

4.0
You CANNOT swim here, the bugs are terrible, and not a single nibble for fish out of the several people that went out. It's free to camp and a lovely view. There are bathrooms scattered, beautiful stars, and your dog can tralala. Otherwise, a waste of time if you're going to fish or swim. Muddy for sure so be careful not to get stuck and the mosquitos are sure to eat you alive 😬We definitely went to fish though and didn't know you can't swim there so it was a huge bummer for the kids. - Jakob Hibbs

Hello, fellow Idaho adventurers! When you’re craving an authentic, no-cost camping experience that takes you off the beaten path, a place like Little Camas Reservoir Campground is a perfect find. Located in the heart of Elmore County, this spot offers a rustic and peaceful getaway from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It’s a place where the simple pleasures of nature—like star-gazing and enjoying the quiet—are the main attractions. While it may not be for everyone, particularly those looking for modern amenities or a fishing and swimming paradise, it holds a unique charm that appeals to a specific kind of camper.

Little Camas Reservoir Campground is best described as a primitive camping area rather than a traditional, amenity-rich campground. It offers a "back-to-basics" experience, focusing on the beautiful natural landscape and providing a quiet space to relax and unwind. The fact that it is "free to camp" is a huge draw, making it an accessible option for anyone looking for an affordable outdoor adventure. It’s a great spot to set up a tent, enjoy a peaceful night under a clear sky, and wake up to a lovely view.

This article will provide a clear and honest look at the Little Camas Reservoir Campground. We will cover its location, the few but important services it provides, and the key features that make it a worthwhile choice for the right kind of camper. We will also address some of the common concerns mentioned in reviews, providing a balanced perspective to help you decide if this is the right spot for your next outing. By the end, you'll have all the information you need to prepare for a successful and enjoyable trip to this unique Elmore County location.

Location and Accessibility

The Little Camas Reservoir Campground is located on Forest Rd 160E, Mountain Home, ID 83647, USA. Its remote location in Elmore County places it within a serene landscape of rolling hills and wide-open spaces, providing a sense of seclusion and a true escape from civilization. The journey to the site may involve some unpaved roads, so it is important to be mindful of road conditions. A review notes that the area can be "muddy for sure so be careful not to get stuck," which is a good reminder to check local weather and road reports before you go.

The campground offers "On-site parking," which is a practical convenience, allowing you to park your vehicle close to your tent or preferred camping spot. While the area is primitive, it is generally accessible for most vehicles, but caution and common sense are advised, especially during or after rain. Despite its remote feel, it is a relatively easy drive from nearby Mountain Home, which is convenient for last-minute supplies.

Services Offered

As a free, primitive campground, Little Camas Reservoir provides a handful of essential services that support a basic camping experience. The focus here is on the natural environment, not on extensive modern facilities.

  • Restrooms: The campground has "bathrooms scattered" throughout the area. These are typically vault toilets, which, while basic, provide a necessary amenity for campers. A review mentions that there are no facilities at all at some specific locations, but public restrooms are generally available somewhere in the area. It is always a good idea to be prepared with your own supplies.

  • Tent Sites: The area is well-suited for tent camping, with plenty of open space to choose your own spot. The views are a primary highlight, and the natural terrain provides opportunities to find a level and scenic place to pitch your tent.

Features / Highlights

What makes Little Camas Reservoir Campground a memorable place are its distinct features and the unique experience it offers.

  • Free Camping: This is perhaps the biggest and most appealing feature. Camping at Little Camas Reservoir doesn’t require a fee, making it an excellent option for budget-conscious travelers and those who prefer a more informal setting.

  • Beautiful Views and Stars: Visitors consistently praise the lovely views of the reservoir and the surrounding landscape. The remote location also means minimal light pollution, making it an "awesome" spot for stargazing. On a clear night, the stars truly put on a show.

  • Dog-Friendly: The campground has a "Dogs allowed" policy, which is great for pet owners. A review notes that your dog "can tralala," which speaks to the open and spacious nature of the area where dogs can run around and enjoy the outdoors with you.

  • Good for Kids: The campground is a "Good for kids" destination, offering a safe and expansive space for children to play and explore. While the lack of swimming may be a "huge bummer," the open space and natural environment still provide plenty of opportunities for fun.

  • Quiet and Peaceful: Reviews describe the place as "quiet" and "peaceful." This makes it an ideal spot for those seeking solitude and a break from crowded campsites and busy parks.

  • Fishing Opportunities: While one review noted they did not get a single bite, another stated it is "awesome to fishing." It's important to set expectations; fishing may be hit-or-miss depending on the season, conditions, and angler skill. The Idaho Fish and Game website indicates that the reservoir is stocked with Rainbow Trout and also contains other fish like Smallmouth Bass.

Contact Information

Since this is a primitive campground, there is no direct phone number for the site itself. However, for information regarding the area, you can contact the local Forest Service office.

What is Worth Choosing

Little Camas Reservoir Campground is worth choosing if you are the kind of camper who values simplicity, solitude, and stunning natural scenery. It’s an ideal spot for a quick, free escape to nature, especially if you live in the greater Mountain Home area. The freedom to find your own spot for your tent, the ability to bring your dog, and the peace and quiet of the surroundings are its biggest selling points. The beautiful views and dark skies for stargazing are also significant draws.

However, it is crucial to manage your expectations and be prepared. The reviews highlight some key challenges, such as the high number of bugs, the muddy shoreline, and the fact that swimming is not an option due to a public health advisory that has been in place in the past and the water conditions. While some visitors have had success fishing, it may not be a sure bet. This campground is not for the camper seeking an all-inclusive, amenity-rich experience. It is for those who are self-sufficient and find joy in the raw, untamed beauty of Idaho’s landscape. If you go in with the right mindset and are prepared for a rustic experience, Little Camas Reservoir Campground can be a wonderful place to spend a quiet evening and reconnect with nature.
