Lewis & Clark County Fairgrounds Campground Introduce
Are you a Montanan looking for a conveniently located, surprisingly peaceful, and genuinely welcoming place to park your RV or set up camp while exploring the vibrant capital city of Helena and its surrounding beauty? Look no further than the Lewis & Clark County Fairgrounds Campground. This isn't just a typical fairgrounds parking lot; it's a dedicated camping area that offers a unique blend of urban accessibility and a tranquil outdoor experience, making it a fantastic option for locals and visitors alike.
Many experienced campers, particularly those familiar with fairgrounds accommodations, are pleasantly surprised by what the Lewis & Clark County Fairgrounds Campground offers. As one reviewer aptly put it, "I stay at a lot of fairgrounds campgrounds and this one is an actual campground with vault toilets rather than a parking lot like most. It is set back from the rest of the grounds." This distinction is crucial, ensuring a more genuine camping feel with distinct sites rather than just paved spaces.
One of the most cherished aspects of staying here is the serene environment. Campers have reported a delightful sense of calm, noting that it "was quiet and peaceful," with the added bonus of "deer in camp every night." Imagine waking up to the sight of local wildlife, enjoying your morning coffee with "Great views of the surrounding mountains." This connection to nature, even within a city's limits, is a true highlight for those who cherish Montana's wildlife and scenic vistas.
While the campground is primarily "electric only," it caters well to RVers and campers by having "water available to fill up before parking." This thoughtful provision ensures that you can arrive fully prepared for your stay. Although there's "No dump station here either," the convenience of nearby "gas stations that have RV dump stations" in Helena makes this a minor consideration. The commitment to cleanliness is also evident, with facilities like the "vault toilets" being praised as clean, further enhancing the comfort of your stay.
For families, the presence of a "playground about 1/4 mile from the campground" adds another layer of convenience, providing a space for younger campers to burn off energy. The overall experience at Lewis & Clark County Fairgrounds Campground is one of unexpected tranquility and practicality, offering a "hidden gem in Helena" that provides a solid base for exploring all that Montana's capital has to offer.
The Lewis & Clark County Fairgrounds Campground is conveniently located at 98 W Custer Ave, Helena, MT 59602, USA. This prime location places it within the city limits of Helena, Montana's capital, offering an advantageous blend of urban accessibility and a surprisingly serene camping environment.
Accessibility to the fairgrounds and its campground is excellent. It is easily reached via major roadways, including Interstate 15 (I-15) and US Highway 12/287, which provides straightforward navigation from all directions. The main entrance to the fairgrounds is typically found at the intersection of Custer Avenue and Henderson Street, which are well-maintained city streets.
Despite being within the city, the campground is notably "set back from the rest of the grounds," providing a buffer from the busier areas where fair events or other functions might occur. This thoughtful placement contributes significantly to its reputation as a "quiet and peaceful" camping spot, even though it's part of a bustling fairgrounds complex.
Its Helena location means campers have immediate access to a wide array of city amenities and attractions. Downtown Helena, with its historic Last Chance Gulch, diverse dining options, local shops, and cultural sites, is just a short drive or bike ride away. Essential services like grocery stores, fuel stations (including those with RV dump stations), and repair services are all conveniently located nearby. The proximity to gas stations with RV dump facilities (such as those mentioned "about 1.8 miles at Centex" on Montana Ave) further enhances its practicality for RV travelers.
Moreover, the campground's Helena setting offers a gateway to Montana's broader outdoor recreational opportunities. It's a convenient starting point for exploring nearby hiking and biking trails, state parks, and the vast landscapes of Central Montana. The ability to enjoy mountain views directly from your campsite while being moments away from urban conveniences is a significant locational advantage for locals and visitors alike.

Jun 21, 2023 · Bridgette MuseWe loved staying here, we had deer in camp every night. It was quiet and peaceful. The only thing was the grass could have been cut. We had lucky #7 it was great.
Sep 29, 2024 · Emilie BrownI got a kidd who needs electric hookups for their medical condition. I've been calling for about a month now an I can't get a hold of anyone I need help please
Jun 11, 2025 · Danylo MakowskyDo you guys by chance rent spaces out by the month? If so how much for a 32ft 5th wheel a guy and his dog?
Mar 29, 2025 · Stephen TurnerThis place is a simple campground, with simple reservations. Bring your own water, but the sites have electricity and there are a variety of lengths for different RV sizes. I like it because it's close to where I work - and camping once a week is cheaper than a motel. No trees, no clubhouse, no creek, etc, but there is a state park and shopping nearby.
