Lewis Campground

French Meadows Rd, Foresthill, CA 95631, USA

4.0
I’ll start by saying this campground had one of the cleanest flush bathrooms I’ve ever seen at a campground - that should say a lot! Camp host was very nice, although they were out of firewood unfortunately. Plenty of wood around to be picked up anyway, I was able to gather enough to keep hours of fire for both nights I was there. There is access to the lake right outside the campground, and a boat ramp at the end of the road. The campground was really quiet after 9pm which I really appreciate. No loud speakers, kids screaming or anything like that. And on a holiday weekend nonetheless! Finally, I saw a previous review about only driving high clearance cars to this campground, which almost made me panic cancel the trip so I felt obligated to come here and clarify. If you, like me, drive a tiny sedan, take Mosquito Ridge Road. It’s asphalt and pretty close to brand new. If you have a high clearance vehicle and are feeling adventurous, you can take Foresthill Divide Road instead. Drive safe! - Anna Nunes

Whether you're looking to launch a boat for a day of fishing, enjoy some paddling on the calm waters, or simply relax by the lakeside, the proximity to the reservoir enhances the overall camping experience. This combination of forested tranquility and aquatic recreation makes it a versatile choice for a wide array of outdoor activities right here in our incredible California backyard.

While access to mountain campgrounds can sometimes be daunting, Lewis Campground benefits from a unique accessibility feature that makes it more approachable for various vehicles. We'll delve into the specifics of getting there, the amenities provided, and why this particular campground holds a special place for locals seeking genuine Sierra Nevada adventures. From exceptionally clean facilities to abundant natural beauty, Lewis Campground truly offers a memorable and suitable camping destination for us Californians.

Location and Accessibility

Lewis Campground is strategically located within the Tahoe National Forest, at French Meadows Rd, Foresthill, CA 95631, USA. This places it in the high country of the Sierra Nevada, approximately 60 miles northeast of Auburn, California, and near the beautiful French Meadows Reservoir. Its setting provides a genuine mountain camping experience, complete with fresh air and towering pines.

Accessibility to Lewis Campground has been a point of interest for many visitors, especially concerning the roads leading in. There are two primary routes to the French Meadows Reservoir area, and understanding them is key for a smooth journey.

  • Mosquito Ridge Road (Asphalt): For those driving standard sedans or who prefer a smoother ride, Mosquito Ridge Road is the recommended route. This road, often described as "pretty close to brand new" asphalt, provides a paved and generally well-maintained path all the way to the campground area. This is excellent news for many Californians who might hesitate to venture onto rough dirt roads with their vehicles.
  • Foresthill Divide Road (Rough Dirt/Gravel): If you have a high-clearance vehicle, such as a Tacoma or a Subaru with good clearance, and are feeling adventurous, Foresthill Divide Road offers an alternative. However, be prepared, as this road can be "pretty rough dirt" and steep in points, according to past campers. While it might be a more scenic or direct route for some, it's not recommended for low-clearance vehicles.

It's important to note that access roads within the forest can be subject to seasonal closures due to snow in winter or fire restrictions in dry periods. Always check with the Tahoe National Forest for current road conditions and any alerts before heading out.

Once you reach the vicinity of French Meadows Reservoir, Lewis Campground is conveniently located with direct access to the lake. A boat ramp is available at the end of the road, making it incredibly easy for those bringing watercraft to launch them onto the reservoir. This dual accessibility – both by different road types and to the water – makes Lewis Campground a versatile and appealing option for a wide range of California adventurers. The journey into the mountains is part of the experience, and knowing your route options helps ensure a safe and enjoyable arrival.
