It’s a place where the geological wonders of ancient times meet modern camping comforts, creating a truly unique experience for campers of all types.
Ledges State Park is celebrated for its well-maintained facilities and the overall beauty of its campground. Visitors consistently praise the cleanliness of the park and the quality of amenities, including modern restrooms and showers with hot water, which are essential for a comfortable camping trip. The campground itself is thoughtfully designed, offering a variety of site types to accommodate everything from large RVs to secluded tent camping, all nestled within a beautiful, often shaded, environment.
Beyond the camping area, the park's main draw is its striking geological features. The iconic sandstone ledges, carved by thousands of years of water erosion, rise dramatically, creating a "canyon" atmosphere that is unlike anything else in Iowa. This unique landscape provides a stunning backdrop for extensive hiking trails that wind through steep slopes, leading to scenic overlooks offering breathtaking views of the Des Moines River Valley. It’s a paradise for nature photographers, hikers, and anyone looking to immerse themselves in Iowa's geological past and vibrant present.
Ledges State Park also holds a special place in Iowa's history, with many of its older facilities, including an arched stone bridge and stone shelters, constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s. These historic structures add a layer of charm and testament to enduring craftsmanship. Whether you're splashing through the famous Pea's Creek (when water levels allow), exploring the deep ravines, or simply enjoying a peaceful evening around a campfire, Ledges State Park Campgrounds promises a memorable and rejuvenating outdoor experience for locals across Iowa.

Ledges State Park Campgrounds Reviews
Lovely park and we'll kept. The campground was beautiful and the showers have hot water.
Jul 01, 2025 · Andrea AmosExcellent camping site with lots of shade (site 40)! Recycling available and garbage collection at every loop. Gnats were terrible everywhere because of the rain. Be sure to see the lower ledges area, as it was under water at the rime of our stay. The hosts were helpful and friendly!
Jul 13, 2024 · Jodi RoedThe scenery is beautiful. There are lots of trails but some are pretty difficult. There is a lot to see nearby. Campground is not very large and could use some better signage. We drove in circles more than once. Camping etiquette is no followed as dogs are barking, parents are yelling at kids and our camp sight became a through way for bikes and walkers day and night.
May 18, 2025 · Cynthia GittaWell kept campground 🏕. Not far from town for anything one may have forgotten at home. Nice hiking trails 🥾 as well as picnic areas near the ledges park attraction. Fun as a natural water 💧 attraction to cool off, and explore the creek aquatic life.
Jul 05, 2024 · Travis RamseyI feel it’s fair to give praise when it’s due as well as criticism and unfortunately this weekend (June 20th, 2025) the campgrounds look terrible!! Standing water around playground equipment as well as the fill stations for water and not just a little water. Standing water at a lot of the campsites, muddy messy campsites. I understand campgrounds can’t control mother nature but a drainage system might be in order but the worst part to me, is the campsites are SO overgrown with weeds and the grass hasn’t been cut in quite sometime. It’s really like a jungle out here. For what we have to pay to camp every night for full electric, these sites should be in MUCH better shape. The host was out mowing his/her site when we arrived on Thursday but none other. Do better Ledges!! Clean up your park
