Nestled along the dramatic coastline near Beaver Bay Township, this campground provides a distinctive "cart-in" approach, allowing campers to transport their gear to secluded sites using provided carts. The Lake Superior Cart-in Campground is a distinctive section of Tettegouche State Park, one of Minnesota's most iconic and scenic state parks. Situated in Beaver Bay Township, this campground caters to campers who desire a more private and rustic experience than traditional drive-in sites, but with some amenities that primitive backcountry camping doesn't offer. The "cart-in" concept means that while you can drive your vehicle to a parking area, you then use provided carts to transport your camping gear to your designated site. This creates a buffer zone between the parking lot and the campsites, enhancing the sense of seclusion.
The campground consists of 13 cart-in sites, many of which are noted for their privacy. While some sites offer direct "Lake Superior views" and are "just a few feet from the cliffs overlooking the lake," others are set back from the shore, providing a different experience. Reviewers highlight the "very private campgrounds" and the useful inclusion of "carts to bring in your gear." Essential facilities like "very well kept bathrooms" (vault toilets, though flush toilets and showers are in the main Baptism River campground) and large "bear lockers" capable of fitting "two large coolers" are provided, adding to the convenience for campers. While some sites may experience highway noise, the overall appeal lies in its unique balance of accessibility and a more intimate wilderness feel along the spectacular North Shore.

From there, campers load their gear onto carts provided by the park. The distance from the parking area to the campsites varies, with the furthest campsite being over half a mile away. This walk, while generally on a wide and well-maintained trail, requires a degree of physical readiness, as you will be pulling a cart with your camping equipment.

It’s important for visitors to be prepared for the short trek with their gear and to check park maps for the exact location of their reserved site within the cart-in loop.

Lake Superior Cart-in Campground Reviews
They have carts to bring in your gear, no water at the campsites, but very well kept bathrooms. The bear lockers will fit two large coolers! Very private campgrounds!
Aug 27, 2023 · Joseph AIf I was rating this as a hiking trail, it would be pretty good. There's lots of parking and the trail is wide and well-maintained.However, for camping, I really can't recommend it. It's over half a mile to the furthest campsite, and there are only two or three that are actually on the water - the rest feel like camping at the edge of a field, with little shade. Unless you are willing to scramble down the bluff, there is no way to get to the shore either. The bathrooms are very smelly, and there is no reason there can't be water access in the campground (but there isn't). On top of that, there is so much highway noise that I heard more honking than I did waves at night.
