Lake Spaulding Campground is situated within Nevada County, CA 95959, USA. This location places it amidst the scenic beauty of the Sierra Nevada foothills, offering a quintessential high-country experience. The campground is specifically located on the shores of Lake Spaulding, a PG&E-managed reservoir known for its beautiful, clear water. It sits at an elevation of approximately 5,014 feet, nestled in a glacier-carved bowl surrounded by ponderosa pine forests and massive granite boulders.
Accessibility to Lake Spaulding Campground is generally good, making it a feasible destination for many Californians. It's about six miles east of Little Truckee Summit on Cottonwood Creek Road. From the junction of I-80 and Highway 20 (exit 161), you can typically drive west on Highway 20 for about 2 miles, then turn right. While the primary roads are paved, some sections leading directly to the campground or specific day-use areas might involve unpaved or less-maintained stretches. Visitors have noted that the boat ramp area can be quite steep.
The drive itself offers scenic views as you ascend into the mountains. For those coming from major Northern California cities like Sacramento, the journey is typically around an hour and a half to two hours, making it an excellent option for weekend trips. From the San Francisco Bay Area, the travel time would be longer, around three to four hours. It's advisable to check current road conditions, especially during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall) or after heavy snow, as the higher elevation can sometimes impact accessibility. Despite its serene and somewhat secluded feel, Lake Spaulding remains within a reasonable driving distance for a refreshing escape into the Sierra Nevada.

Lake Spaulding Campground PGE Reviews
Beautiful lake, very clear water and nice day use areas. Was looking for a campground and unfortunately it doesnt look to be set up for any travel trailers. Maybe a small popup camper, sites were nice and clean and fairly level for a tent. Boat ramp is extremely steep and no dock, but manageable. Will definitely be bringing our tent out there soon!

Aug 21, 2023 · Shari AlvaradoSuper beautiful lake water temps in the mid 40's in May. Lake doesn't open till August this year
May 11, 2025 · Kevin TweedI would have given Lake Spaulding a 5 star review, but for the behavior of the camp hostess. She drove thru the campground screaming at people at the top of her lungs. Quite unprofessional. I love the campground, the lake, the easy access, and the sound of the train at night. i don't even mind the traffic in the distance. I will continue to return here. Hopefully next year there will be new hosts.
Jul 31, 2024 · Katherine SeilheimerThe scenery is great 5 ⭐ but the day use and access to the lake were steep and virtually non existent. So not best for someone wanting to have a picnic and/or quick dip to cool off. If you have a boat and like to water ski while being in a fantastic natural environment then I would recommend 100%. Seems great for kayak and SUP. It's right off the 20 highway so easy access. Campground is ok too. Just not the place to take the family to swim for the day. Those words are my opinion and thank you for reading them!
