Lake Canyon Recreation Area Campground

Campground ★4.0

Forest Rd 3054, Mt Pleasant, UT 84647, USA

4.0
One of our favorite camping spots. We try to come every year! The nearby reservoirs are great for kayaks and paddle boards. Historically for us, the shore fishing has not been good on Huntington or Cleveland. If you want to shore-fish, try the smaller ones like the beaver pond reservoir, but sometimes (at dusk) miller flat reservoir has been good fishing for the kids. There are also nearby ATV trails that my husband and kids like to take our motorcycles on. If you are coming to camp in “peace and quiet” this probably isn’t the area for you. Lots of people in side-by-sides, four wheelers and on motorcycles use the nearby trails. It is also a pack-it-in, pack-it-out area with no garbage bins to dispose of trash. This campground is considered “boondocking” which means no hookups for trailers. There are however occasional vault toilets amongst the campgrounds. - B.T. Mangus

We'll take a closer look at what makes this a must-visit destination for those living in or exploring Utah. From its scenic surroundings to the wide range of activities available, Lake Canyon Recreation Area Campground provides a genuine connection to Utah's wild beauty. This guide aims to provide you with all the essential information you need to plan your trip, ensuring you make the most of your time in this remarkable recreational area.

Location and Accessibility

The Lake Canyon Recreation Area Campground is situated in a prime location for exploring central Utah's natural wonders. You'll find it tucked away in the scenic Manti-La Sal National Forest, near the charming town of Mt Pleasant. The address is Forest Rd 3054, Mt Pleasant, UT 84647, USA. Its remote yet accessible location makes it a popular choice for both local Utahns and visitors traveling through the state. While the campground feels secluded, it's not so far off the beaten path that it's difficult to reach. It’s important to note that some of the roads leading into and around the campground can be a bit rough, so it’s wise to drive a vehicle that can handle uneven surfaces, especially if you're pulling a trailer.

For those with accessibility needs, the campground provides a wheelchair-accessible parking lot, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. The area is known for its sprawling, natural landscape, and while many sites are spread out, some are closer together. The campground is also a "boondocking" area, which means there are no hookups for trailers, so campers should be prepared to be self-sufficient. This is part of the appeal for those seeking a more authentic, less commercialized camping experience.

Services Offered

  • Picnic tables: While not all sites have a picnic table, many do, providing a convenient surface for meals and food preparation. It's a good idea to bring your own if you're not sure if your site will have one.

  • Public restroom & public shower: The campground offers public restrooms, including vault toilets in some areas. While these facilities are available, their cleanliness can depend on the consideration of other campers. There are also public showers, which are a welcome amenity after a day of hiking or off-roading.

  • Running water: Running water is available, which is a significant plus for campers who need to fill up water bottles or wash up.

  • Tent sites: The campground is well-suited for tent camping, with various sites available to accommodate different group sizes and preferences. Some sites are more spread out, offering more privacy, while others are a bit closer together.

  • Fire rings: Most sites are equipped with a fire ring, though it's important to note that they may not include a grate. Campers should be prepared to bring their own or plan accordingly for cooking.

Features / Highlights

  • Hiking: The area is excellent for hiking, offering kid-friendly hikes that are perfect for families. The surrounding trails provide opportunities to explore the beautiful local flora and fauna.

  • ATV and OHV trails: A major draw of this recreation area is the extensive network of nearby trails for off-highway vehicles, including side-by-sides, four-wheelers, and motorcycles. It's a popular spot for OHV enthusiasts, which contributes to the vibrant, active atmosphere. Be aware that this can mean more noise from the trails, so it might not be the best choice for those seeking complete solitude.

  • Fishing: The nearby reservoirs, such as Huntington, Cleveland, Miller Flat, and the Beaver Pond Reservoir, offer excellent opportunities for fishing. While shore fishing at some of the larger reservoirs might not always be successful, a local tip is to try the smaller ones, like the Beaver Pond Reservoir, or fish at dusk at Miller Flat Reservoir, which can be great for kids.

  • Kid-friendly: With kid-friendly hikes, fishing opportunities, and a generally active environment, this campground is an excellent choice for families with children. It's a place where kids can truly connect with nature and burn off some energy.

  • Pet-friendly: Your furry friends are welcome here! The campground allows dogs, so you can bring your four-legged family members along for the adventure.

  • Picnics: With picnic tables available at many sites, it's a great spot for a day trip or an afternoon picnic, even if you're not staying overnight. The beautiful setting makes any meal feel special.

The proximity to stunning reservoirs makes it ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding, and the ATV trails provide endless fun for motorcycle and four-wheeler enthusiasts.
