Kreis Pond Campground Introduce
For those of us who call Montana home, the appeal of a secluded spot where the fish are biting and the only sounds are those of nature is undeniable. Kreis Pond Campground, nestled near Huson in the expansive Lolo National Forest, is precisely that kind of place. It’s a true local gem, offering a rustic yet rewarding camping experience centered around a tranquil pond teeming with fish. This campground is not about flashy amenities or bustling crowds; it's about getting back to basics, enjoying the peace and quiet, and embracing the simple pleasures of the Montana outdoors.
Many locals and those passing through agree that "the extra drive in was well worth it." It's the kind of spot where you can truly disconnect, as there's "no cell service fyi," allowing for a genuine escape from the digital world. Whether you're casting a line, enjoying a campfire, or simply soaking in the serene environment, Kreis Pond Campground provides a genuine taste of Montana's natural beauty. It's a testament to the fact that some of the best experiences are found just a little further down a forest road.
Kreis Pond Campground is located near
Huson, MT 59846, USA, within the Lolo National Forest. This places it off of Interstate 90, making it a convenient stop for those traveling through Western Montana, yet remote enough to offer a significant sense of solitude. Accessing the campground requires navigating forest service roads. While seemingly close to the interstate, reviews indicate that "the forest road is rough on towed campers," suggesting that while it's traversable, it demands caution and potentially a slower pace, especially if you're pulling a trailer or RV. One crucial piece of advice from a local reviewer is to "Follow the signage!" when you get off the interstate, as Google Maps might suggest a route that contradicts official park signage. This underscores the importance of trusting the local guidance provided by the Forest Service. The drive, though potentially an hour long for some, is widely considered "a gem! Worth your time." This journey, while perhaps a bit bumpy, sets the stage for the tranquil experience that awaits, delivering you to a truly peaceful natural setting.
Kreis Pond Campground provides essential services for a comfortable, rustic camping experience, emphasizing its natural setting rather than extensive modern conveniences.
- Campsites: The campground offers a number of designated campsites suitable for both tents and smaller RVs/campers. While the exact number of sites isn't specified, they are often described as being part of a "small" or "gem" of a campground, implying a more intimate setting.
- Fees: There is a nominal fee for camping, reported by a user as "$10 a night." This affordable rate makes it an excellent value for a serene outdoor experience.
- Restrooms: The campground is equipped with "two bathrooms," which are typically vault toilets (outhouses). While basic, their presence is a key amenity in a remote forest setting.
- No Potable Water: It is crucial to note that like many primitive forest service campgrounds, potable water is generally not available. Campers should bring their own drinking water or have a reliable method for filtering/treating water from natural sources.
- Fire Rings and Picnic Tables: Each campsite typically includes a fire ring for campfires (always check current fire restrictions before lighting a fire) and a picnic table, providing basic necessities for outdoor living.
- No Cell Service: As highlighted by multiple reviews, there is "no cell service fyi." This is a feature for those seeking to truly disconnect, but it also means preparedness for emergencies and navigation without digital assistance is paramount.
The true allure of Kreis Pond Campground lies in its natural highlights and the unique experiences it facilitates.
- Excellent Fishing Opportunities: This is arguably the biggest draw. Kreis Pond is a stocked pond, known for both "cutthroat trout" and "bass." One reviewer noted their "son caught two bass in the pond," while another mentioned meeting a retiree who "fly fishes it from a kayak" for cutthroats. This diverse fishery offers something for every angler.

- Scenic Pond Setting: The campground is centered around Kreis Pond, providing a picturesque backdrop for camping, fishing, and relaxation. The still waters of the pond are perfect for reflecting the surrounding forest and sky.
- Wildlife Viewing: Being deep within the Lolo National Forest, there's always a chance to spot local wildlife, from birds to larger mammals. The presence of a Ranger "tucked away in the trees" for oversight also adds a layer of security, implying a well-monitored environment.
- Rustic, Authentic Experience: This campground offers a genuine taste of Montana's rustic outdoor lifestyle. It's for those who appreciate simplicity, natural beauty, and the challenge of a less-developed camping spot.
- Community Feel (implied): The mention of "several locals showed up to fish or scout a nearby hunting spot" suggests a friendly, low-key community atmosphere, particularly on weekends.
- Proximity to Hunting and Recreation: Its location within the Lolo National Forest means it's an excellent base camp for hunters scouting nearby areas or for general exploration of the vast forest lands.

It's that "gem" of a spot that's just far enough off the main road to deter the casual tourist, preserving its tranquility for those who truly appreciate it. We understand and are often prepared for the "rough" forest roads, knowing that such journeys often lead to the most rewarding destinations. The fact that "several locals showed up to fish or scout a nearby hunting spot" speaks volumes about its standing as a cherished community resource for recreation and connection to the land.
The fantastic fishing, whether you're after cutthroat trout or bass, is a major draw for many of us. The opportunity to cast a line in a quiet pond, with the distinct possibility of catching dinner, is a quintessential Montana experience. Aug 15, 2024 · THELEVERACTION gunTook us an hour to reach it mostly because the forest road is rough on towed campers. This is a gem! Worth your time though I imagine busy on weekends and holidays. Met a retiree who fly fishes it from a kayak. The pond is stocked with cutthroat trout. Oddly folks I talked to said there were bass in there and were thrilled to catch one. We have bass where I live and no trout so I’m in for the cutthroats. Several locals showed up to fish or scout a nearby hunting spot. I found it interesting that a Ranger sat up in his truck all night tucked away in the trees. I imagine to prevent nefarious behavior. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay even though I caught no fish. I saw fish hit the top water. PS when you get off the interstate Google maps directs you in a way we weren’t willing to follow as it opposed the signage. Follow the signage!
Sep 23, 2021 · Freedom SeekerVery busy campground. Navigate with Google to the Ranger Station, then follow the signs. Make sure to bring a kayak or something to play in the water. Also some hiking/ biking trails leading out from campground.
Jun 06, 2021 · Jonathan NelsonThis is a beautiful gem hidden in the outback. You cannot hear any trace of civilization. I was a little nervous about the long gravel road on my cruiser but it all worked out even the trip out in rain. I was treated to almost full moon reflecting off the pond.
Aug 31, 2020 · Mark EvansVery nice campground, great pond size, in a great recreational area, ive spent about 4 weekends back to back here. Its quite the party area, some hiking spots nearby if your looking for a hike, do some fishing, or go for a quick dip in the lake. 10$ a night aint bad.
