Klum Landing Campground

Ashland, OR 97520, USA

4.0
Ok, where to start. It is very beautiful here and watch out for the deer as they will ravage your camp if you leave anything out. The raccoons too. I wish that Jackson county would sell this campground to me. I would take much better care of it. We were there for 5 days and even though the county worker came every single day, the bathrooms did not get cleaned the whole time. The wind blows every day here so the dirt gets everywhere which is part of camping but it's why the bathrooms do need to get cleaned. This place is a major stop for the folks hiking the Pacific Crest trail and we got to meet some of them which was nice. There is no camp host here so you have to go to the resort for firewood and anything else and pay a premium for everything there. We wont camp there again unless I get a call from the county telling me that they will sell it to me. - jim blower

Klum Landing Campground Introduce

For those of us living in Oregon, the call of the wild is often just a short drive away, leading us to some of the most picturesque natural settings the Pacific Northwest has to offer. Klum Landing Campground, situated near Ashland and nestled by the beautiful Howard Prairie Lake, is one such destination that holds a special place in the hearts of many local outdoor enthusiasts. It’s a place where the stunning natural beauty of Southern Oregon truly shines, providing a tranquil escape from the everyday.

Klum Landing Campground offers a classic camping experience, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the serene environment of towering trees and shimmering lake waters. While the camping experience here can vary with factors like lake levels and on-site services, its fundamental appeal lies in its breathtaking views and its prime location for outdoor activities. It’s a spot that allows Oregonians to reconnect with the landscape, enjoy fresh air, and create lasting memories, whether it's gazing at the stars, spotting local wildlife, or simply unwinding by a campfire.

Klum Landing Campground is located near Ashland, Oregon, with the specific address being Ashland, OR 97520, USA. More precisely, it's identified as Klum Landing Park & Boat Ramp, part of the Howard Prairie Lake Recreation Area. This places it approximately 23 miles east of Ashland, accessible via Dead Indian Memorial Road to Hyatt Prairie Road.

The campground's location on Howard Prairie Lake, a popular reservoir in the Cascade Mountains, makes it a key destination for water-based recreation in Southern Oregon. While it offers a sense of being "away from it all," it is still within a reasonable driving distance for many Oregonians, particularly those in the southern part of the state. The journey to Klum Landing is a scenic one, winding through forested terrain and open spaces that showcase the diverse beauty of our region. It's an ideal spot for those looking for a relatively accessible mountain lake experience.

It's important for local users to note that while the address is simply "Ashland, OR 97520," the campground itself is a drive from the city center, ensuring a more remote and natural setting. This also means that amenities and services might be concentrated at nearby resorts or larger facilities within the Howard Prairie Lake area, rather than directly at the campground gate.

Klum Landing Campground offers a selection of basic yet essential services to support your camping adventure, though it's important for visitors to be aware of certain limitations.

  • Campsites with Amenities: The campground offers 30 campsites. Some reviews mention that there were previously hookup sites with water and electricity, but official Jackson County Parks information indicates 30 campsites with no hookups at Klum Landing specifically, as of recent updates. Each site typically includes a picnic table and a campfire ring.

  • Restroom Facilities: The campground provides restrooms, which are generally described as "clean" by visitors, although some older reviews mention inconsistencies in cleaning frequency. Showers are also available and are now free to use.

  • Boat Ramp: A significant service at Klum Landing is the 2-lane boat ramp, providing direct access to Howard Prairie Lake for boating and fishing activities. However, it is crucial to check current lake levels, as dam work can significantly impact the ability to launch boats, as noted by recent reviews.

  • Trash Pickup: Trash pickup services are available, helping to keep the campground tidy and maintain the natural environment.

  • Firewood: While firewood is available, campers might need to acquire it from the nearby Howard Prairie Lake Resort, as there isn't always a dedicated camp host on-site at Klum Landing to sell it directly. Firewood is typically sold for $8.00 per bundle.

  • Wildlife Presence: Campers should be prepared for wildlife, specifically deer and raccoons, which are known to approach campsites if food or belongings are left unattended.

Klum Landing Campground holds several features and highlights that draw campers to its scenic location, even with its nuances.

  • Beautiful Lakeside Views: The most consistent highlight is the "very beautiful" scenery and "amazing views of the lake," offering a serene backdrop for relaxation and outdoor activities. The surrounding natural beauty is a significant draw.

  • Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) Stop: Klum Landing is a recognized "major stop for the folks hiking the Pacific Crest trail." This provides a unique opportunity for campers to meet and interact with long-distance hikers, fostering a sense of community and shared adventure. PCT hikers often appreciate the availability of flush toilets and showers here.

  • Opportunities for Fishing and Boating: Howard Prairie Lake is known for trout and bass fishing. With a boat ramp on site, it's an ideal spot for anglers and those who enjoy being out on the water, provided lake levels permit launching.

  • Wildlife Viewing: The presence of deer and raccoons, while requiring caution with food storage, offers opportunities for wildlife observation in their natural habitat.

  • Relatively Secluded Setting: Despite its popularity, the campground offers a chance to feel immersed in nature away from urban noise. The wind, though contributing to dust, is also a natural element of the high-desert mountain environment.

  • Affordable Camping: Campsite fees are listed at $30/night (including one vehicle), making it a relatively affordable option for experiencing a lakeside camping adventure in Oregon.

  • Close to Ashland Attractions: Its proximity to Ashland means campers can easily combine their outdoor adventure with cultural experiences like the Oregon Shakespeare Festival or exploring the town’s vibrant arts and culinary scene.
