Kilbrennan Lake Campground

NF-2394, Troy, MT 59935, USA

4.0
Nice and quiet. This lake is small and has a no wake rule, which is perfect! With 6 sites and up in the woods of a secluded lake this was a good get away. Narrow road along the lake but a skilled driver with a load not too wide will have no problem. The only amenities are a vault toilet. Which is also why it's budget friendly at $10 a night. Not too far from the town of Troy if you need last minute supplies or need cell service as there is NO service at the lake. In my opinion this was a great spot! Be bear aware in this area!! - Randy Orsborn

Kilbrennan Lake Campground Introduce

For those Montanans who cherish true tranquility and an authentic wilderness experience, Kilbrennan Lake Campground offers an escape unlike any other. Tucked away in the dense forests of the Kootenai National Forest near Troy, this small, secluded campground is a hidden gem for campers seeking peace, natural beauty, and a genuine break from the everyday hustle. Unlike bustling, amenity-rich parks, Kilbrennan Lake embraces a rustic charm, focusing on the breathtaking surroundings and the quiet serenity of a pristine mountain lake. It's the perfect spot for locals who are "bear aware" and ready to immerse themselves in the wild heart of Montana, whether for a fishing trip, a peaceful float, or simply to enjoy the incredible quiet that only our state can offer.

Kilbrennan Lake Campground is situated northwest of Troy, Montana, with the address NF-2394, Troy, MT 59935, USA. This places it deep within the expansive Kootenai National Forest in the northwestern corner of the state. For Montanans, especially those in the western regions, reaching Kilbrennan Lake requires a bit of an adventurous spirit and a good sense of direction, as the approach is part of the secluded experience.

From the town of Troy, you would typically travel west on US Highway 2 for approximately 3 miles to the East Side Road, also known as Road 176. Turn right onto Road 176 and follow it for about 2 miles north until you reach Kilbrennan Lake Road 2394. Turn right again onto Road 2394 and follow it for approximately 8.5 miles to the campground entrance.

Customer reviews highlight that while the location is a "good get away," the road leading to it can be "narrow" along the lake. However, for a "skilled driver with a load not too wide," it should pose "no problem." This means while RVs are reportedly welcome, caution and awareness of your vehicle's size are advisable. It’s important to note that the secluded nature means there is "NO cell service at the lake," so be prepared to disconnect or make any necessary calls in Troy before heading in. Despite the slightly challenging access, the reward is a truly "secluded" and "quiet" retreat, making the journey part of the adventure for those who value privacy and an untouched natural setting.

Kilbrennan Lake Campground provides a minimalist yet functional set of services, emphasizing a rustic and budget-friendly camping experience.

  • Campsites: The campground offers a small number of sites, typically 6 or 7, each equipped with essential camping amenities such as picnic tables and fire rings with grills. These sites are situated "up in the woods" and provide a sense of seclusion, perfect for a private getaway. Campground roads and parking spurs are of native soil, fitting the rustic environment.

  • Vault Toilets: The only amenity provided in terms of facilities is a vault toilet. Reviews indicate that these are generally "decent," implying they are maintained for basic cleanliness, which is a key factor for campers relying on such facilities.

  • No Potable Water: It is crucial for visitors to note that there is NO developed water supply or drinking water available at Kilbrennan Lake Campground. Campers must bring their own water for all needs, including drinking, cooking, and washing. This is a standard characteristic of many primitive or budget-friendly national forest campgrounds.

  • No Hookups: As a primitive campground, there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available at the campsites. Campers should plan to be fully self-sufficient in terms of power and waste management.

  • Boat Ramp: A boat ramp, developed for smaller boats, is located adjacent to the campground on the north side of the lake, providing convenient access for water activities.

  • First-Come, First-Served: All sites at Kilbrennan Lake Campground are typically on a first-come, first-served basis. This means no advance reservations are accepted, adding to the spontaneous nature of a visit. However, with only 6-7 sites, arriving early, especially during peak season, is advisable.

  • Affordable Fees: The campground is very "budget friendly," with a daily fee of $10 per single site. This makes it an excellent option for those seeking an economical camping trip. A 50% discount is available with US Golden Age/Access or Interagency Senior/Access Passes.

Kilbrennan Lake Campground boasts several unique features and highlights that make it a truly captivating destination for Montana locals seeking a specific type of outdoor experience.

The calm waters provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all skill levels, allowing visitors to truly relax and soak in the "breathtakingly beautiful" surroundings.

  • Secluded and Quiet Atmosphere: Reviewers consistently emphasize the "quiet and secluded" nature of the campground. Tucked away "up in the woods of a secluded lake," it offers a deep sense of peace and solitude, a welcome escape from more crowded recreational areas.
