KCL Camp Ground

Unnamed Road,, Santa Margarita, CA 93453, USA

4.0
Small campground for 12 smaller than 30 ft rigs or tents. Most are much smaller. Rough bumpy road for miles ether direction on a first come, first serve campground. Has vaulted toilet with no water or other services. If full, would seek off road area on right just as you approach. Has older building of interest. There was a great horned owl in one of the few eucalyptus trees at the campsite. Quiet and nice area to take a hike or two with pretty nice views if you like the high desert landscape. Warning not to travel dirt roads after a rain as you’re likely to get stuck. Better if you come in from the north side (58) on paved roads, but would limit you to boondocking likely because unable to get to this or Selby campgrounds. - Michael Brandin

KCL Camp Ground Introduce

For California locals yearning for a tranquil, intimate, and truly off-grid camping experience, KCL Campground near Santa Margarita offers a unique high desert retreat. This small, first-come, first-served site provides a raw and beautiful connection with nature, away from the crowds of more developed campgrounds. If you appreciate self-sufficiency, stunning desert vistas, and the quiet camaraderie of fellow outdoor enthusiasts, KCL Campground might just become your new favorite secret spot in the Golden State.

Introduction / Overview

KCL Campground is a small, intimate camping area designed for those who appreciate a more rustic and less formal outdoor experience. Located near Santa Margarita, it caters primarily to smaller rigs (under 30 feet) and tent campers, offering a genuine boondocking feel even with designated sites. What sets KCL apart is its natural beauty and the sense of community that often forms among its visitors. One camper beautifully described it as a "Beautiful intimate campsite." While it can get "completely packed" at times, the spirit of sharing available space is evident, with campers often finding a patch of grass to set up. "Camp neighbors were awesome and friendly," highlights the positive atmosphere found here.

Managed as a first-come, first-served site, KCL Campground truly embodies the spirit of spontaneous adventure. It doesn't offer the extensive amenities of a developed park, but rather focuses on providing a peaceful environment for enjoying the "high desert landscape." This includes surprisingly clean vault toilets and a distinct lack of water or other services, emphasizing self-reliance. For those who embrace the quiet and the challenge of remote camping, and are prepared for the nuances of unpaved access roads, KCL offers a rewarding escape into California's less-traveled natural areas.

Location and Accessibility

KCL Campground is located on an Unnamed Road, near Santa Margarita, CA 93453, USA. This places it within California's high desert region, offering a distinct landscape characterized by arid beauty, rolling hills, and unique flora. While the general location is Santa Margarita, accessing the campground requires navigating unpaved roads, which is a key consideration for visitors.

Accessibility to KCL Campground is a significant factor to note. As described by a past visitor, there is a "rough bumpy road for miles either direction." This strongly suggests that while many vehicles might ultimately reach the campground, it's advisable to approach with caution, especially after rain. "Warning not to travel dirt roads after a rain as you’re likely to get stuck." It's also mentioned that coming from the north side (via Highway 58 on paved roads) might limit access to the campground itself, suggesting that the most direct route to KCL may involve some challenging unpaved sections. Therefore, a higher-clearance vehicle or one designed for off-road travel might be beneficial, especially for those who wish to explore beyond the immediate campground area or during adverse weather. The campground is designed for "12 smaller than 30 ft rigs or tents. Most are much smaller," indicating that large RVs may have difficulty with both the access roads and maneuvering within the small campground itself. Despite the access challenges, its secluded nature contributes to the quiet and intimate atmosphere, a trade-off many prepared campers are willing to make.

Services Offered
  • First-Come, First-Served Sites: KCL Campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning reservations are not available. Campers must arrive and secure an open spot.
  • Tent and Small RV Camping: The campground is suitable for "smaller than 30 ft rigs or tents." Most sites are much smaller, indicating a preference for more compact setups.
  • Vault Toilets: Basic restroom facilities are provided in the form of vault toilets. A positive note from a reviewer mentioned that the "bathrooms surprisingly didn’t smell," suggesting they are maintained well for this type of facility.
  • No Water or Other Services: Campers must be entirely self-sufficient, as there is "no water or other services" available on-site. This means bringing all necessary drinking water and preparing for off-grid living.
  • Designated Parking/Camping Patches: While it can be a "free for all where you park wherever you can and set up on any available patch of grass" when packed, there are designated areas to set up camp, allowing for an intimate but sometimes flexible arrangement.
  • Fire Pits (Implicit): While not explicitly stated for every site, a common feature of such campgrounds for a "camping" experience is the availability of fire pits, often created by previous campers. (Always check local fire regulations before lighting a fire.)
  • Off-Road Parking/Boondocking Areas Nearby: If the campground is full, there are suggestions to "seek off road area on right just as you approach" for potential boondocking opportunities, indicating a general openness to dispersed camping in the vicinity (always confirm legality and regulations for dispersed camping).
Features / Highlights
  • Intimate and Quiet Atmosphere: KCL Campground is known for its "beautiful intimate campsite" and "quiet" environment. This makes it ideal for campers seeking solitude and a break from crowded, noisy areas.
  • High Desert Landscape and Views: The campground offers "pretty nice views if you like the high desert landscape." This unique Californian desert scenery provides a distinct backdrop for outdoor activities, different from coastal or mountain settings.
  • Opportunities for Hiking: Visitors can "take a hike or two" directly from the campground, exploring the surrounding high desert terrain. "Few trails that you and your dog can explore on" indicate dog-friendly access.
  • Dog-Friendly: The mention of trails for "you and your dog" suggests that KCL Campground is a welcoming spot for canine companions, allowing them to join in the outdoor adventures.
  • Unique Eucalyptus Trees: The presence of "a few eucalyptus trees" is noted, which can provide some shade and a unique visual element in the desert environment, even hosting wildlife like a "great horned owl."
  • Old Building of Interest: An "older building of interest" exists nearby, adding a touch of historical intrigue or unique photographic opportunity for those who explore the area.
  • Self-Reliant Camping: For those who enjoy true wilderness camping, the lack of services is a highlight, promoting self-sufficiency and a deeper connection with nature.
  • Free/Low-Cost Camping: While specific fees aren't provided, its comparison to boondocking and first-come, first-served nature often implies very low or no fees, making it a cost-effective option for extended stays (always confirm fee status upon arrival).
Contact Information

Given that KCL Campground is located on an "Unnamed Road" and is described as a first-come, first-served site with "no water or other services" and "no camp host on site," direct contact information like a phone number for the campground itself is typically not available. This type of campground often falls under the management of a broader federal or state agency responsible for the public lands it resides on.

For Californians seeking to truly disconnect and immerse themselves in the high desert's unique beauty, KCL offers an intimate and quiet escape that is increasingly rare to find.

Its first-come, first-served nature allows for spontaneous adventures, appealing to those who prefer flexibility over structured reservations. While the access roads can be challenging and require preparedness, this very aspect contributes to its secluded charm, ensuring a less-packed environment where campers can truly find peace. The community spirit, often characterized by friendly neighbors, adds to the welcoming atmosphere, even in the absence of an on-site host.

For dog owners, the dog-friendly trails are a significant bonus, allowing furry companions to join in the exploration of the "pretty nice views" of the high desert landscape. The presence of basic amenities like vault toilets (surprisingly clean) means essential needs are met, while the lack of water and other services encourages a beneficial level of self-reliance, aligning perfectly with the ethos of true outdoor enthusiasts. KCL Campground is not just a place to sleep; it's an opportunity for California locals to experience the quiet beauty of their state's diverse landscapes, hone their wilderness skills, and create cherished memories in an intimate, off-grid setting that feels truly their own.
