KAYAK STARVED ROCK CAMPGROUND Reviews
We booked here very last minute since most sites for memorial day were booked already. Once we arrived, we quickly realized why this site was still available. All of the sites are very very close together, in all my years of camping I have never seen anything like it. You can look a few feet over and directly see/hear everything the campsite next to you is doing, there is maybe 10 ft in between each site and absolutely no privacy at all. We also did not see any “no music at all through any speakers at any time of day” announcement until immediately after paying for the reservation (i accept that this could be my fault for overlooking it on the website) but i just think that is a very silly rule. Of course, staying quiet during quiet hours makes complete sense, but I have again never ever been to a campsite that does not allow music during the day at all. The site itself it’s just very bumpy, I would think they could at least flatten the ground a bit so you can put down a tent on even ground. Overall, I would have been fine if we payed $10 for this campsite a night, but charging $30 is unreasonable. The staff were helpful and nice. The kayaks were nice, but they are very expensive. If they spaced out the sites a bit, allowed music during the daylight hours and charged a bit less money for the site, I would definitely return. However, unfortunately overall we were disappointed with the site.
May 28, 2025 · Lucy WeaverCampers: be warned that the camp sites are mostly all gravel and rock. If tent camping, sleeping mats are NOT sufficient. Use cots or air mattresses. No, we did not set up tents in the parking area of the site. There are sites in the "100s" area with zero grass or sand.Kayaks are a little more expensive than other options but the 4 hour rental is the best deal there. Yes, the kayaks were nice!
Jun 16, 2025 · J BWe had a 2 hour guided kayak tour. Turtle Rick was the absolute best tour guide. He is sooo knowledgeable and funny and fun. He mixed in Illinois trivia, Starved Rock info, and knowledge about all the plants/animals/and rock formations. He's such a pleasant people and connected well with all ages. You can tell that he loves what he does. This was my first time on a kayak and I felt totally safe and at ease. I would absolutely do it again with him.We stayed at an Airbnb in the historic Eastside area. It was lovely.
Jul 02, 2025 · Christine BroomsClose enough camp sites that you can hear your neighbors fart. Driving paths next to site so people are walking/driving through your site all day and night. Gravel covering where tent goes so unless you have good sleeping pads you won’t be very comfortable. Also no bathrooms or showers, port a potties only. If non of that is a deal breaker for you then the location is gorgeous. Great view of the river. However you cannot swim so keep that in mind.
Jun 29, 2025 · Hana AmelioKayaks were affordable, clean, and the route to Sheehan Island is gorgeous! Sandstone bluffs along the coast full of nesting birds. Go later in the day and you can watch fish and birds catch bugs across the water.
