Juniper Campground is located in Quemado, NM 87829, USA. This location places it in a relatively secluded area of western New Mexico, offering an authentic wilderness experience while still being accessible for travelers. For those driving from the larger cities in the state, the journey to Quemado is a scenic one, passing through diverse landscapes that showcase the unique geography of New Mexico.
Accessibility to the campground is straightforward, with on-site parking available for all visitors. While the roads leading to the area are generally well-maintained, it's always a good idea for RVers and those with larger vehicles to check conditions, especially during certain seasons. The campground's position provides a sense of being far removed from civilization, which is a key part of its appeal. It's important to note for those who rely on constant connectivity that cell phone service can be limited or nonexistent in this area. This feature, for many, is a benefit, as it encourages a true digital detox and a deeper immersion in nature. The peaceful seclusion is a major draw for campers seeking to truly get away from it all.
Despite its peaceful setting, the campground is not a long distance from the lake, which is a significant highlight for many visitors. The access to the lake is a key feature, although some visitors have noted that the path down to the water can be rocky and steep in parts. This is a point to consider for those with mobility issues or families with very young children. However, for most, it's a small price to pay for the opportunity to enjoy kayaking, fishing, and the beautiful lakeside scenery.

What is Worth Choosing
Juniper Campground stands out as a compelling choice for campers in New Mexico for several key reasons. Its primary appeal lies in its quiet and serene atmosphere. Unlike commercial RV parks that can feel crowded and noisy, Juniper Campground offers a true sense of escape. The seclusion, combined with the friendly presence of the camp hosts, creates a welcoming and tranquil environment. For those who feel that camping should be a peaceful retreat, this is a significant advantage. The lack of reliable cell service is a feature that many appreciate, as it forces a disconnection from digital distractions and encourages a deeper engagement with nature and companions.
The dual accommodation for both RV and tent campers makes it a versatile destination. The availability of electric and water hookups for RVs means that even with modern conveniences, you can enjoy a rustic setting. At the same time, the presence of dedicated tent sites ensures that those who prefer a more traditional camping experience are also well catered to. The availability of clean restrooms and picnic tables adds to the overall comfort, making it a viable option for those who might be new to camping or prefer some basic amenities.
Furthermore, the location’s proximity to the lake is a major draw. The opportunity for fishing and kayaking is a highlight that enhances the camping experience beyond just staying at a site. This natural feature provides a focal point for activities and relaxation. While some parts of the access to the lake can be challenging, the reward of being able to enjoy a body of water in such a beautiful setting is well worth it. The campground is also notably family-friendly, making it a great place to introduce children to the joys of the outdoors in a safe and peaceful environment.
In conclusion, Juniper Campground offers a unique blend of peace, natural beauty, and essential services. Its value lies not in luxury, but in its ability to provide an authentic, quiet camping experience. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Very quite campgrounds. Camp hosts are very friendly. There is little to no cell phone service. Lake is a short distance and great for fishing
May 28 · Krista LewisWe were there from 7/29/2022, leaving 8/3 and had reserved and paid for site 11. The lake itself is great, 5 stars. We used a kayak and went all around. Some parts are only one foot deep. Good things: bathrooms were clean and they had toilet paper; electricity and water were available and worked well; they had cleaned brush and there were many piles of wood for fires. The access to the lake is about 500 feet down from Juniper and parts are rocky and at 45 degree slope. If you go in an RV and stay at Juniper Campground be aware that it is not setup correctly. First- there are 6 areas that each area has parking for 3 RVs but very close together-see photo You end up being too close to the other RVs. In our case 2 feet. Second- you can only reserve odd spots or sites We reserved #11. When we got there a big family had #10, #11, and #12, 3 big rvs. We would have been in the middle of them! We ended up in #9 that is not as good (not flat at all). The ranger showed up on Sunday 7/31. He was ok with our arrangement of switching sites. There was no host. Third- out of the 9 sites that can be reserved, at least 4 had "reserved" signs that were expired. One had been expired for since 7/21 (see photo). On 7/31, the ranger said that he would tell the person in charge. RECOMMENDATIONS: 1 You could place all 3 of the sites in a given area or group as reservation only. 2 DON'T increase the number of sites per area from 3 to 4. As is, the distance between the 35 footer that parked in number 10 and our RV was 2 feet. 3 Reduce the number of sites per area from 3 to 2. In most National forests/parks that we have stayed in, there are single sites separated by trees. This felt like commercial rv parks - too jammed in. 4 PLEASE ADD TRASH CANS- we saw them all piles together in the Pinon Campground.
August 03 · Guillermo LoubrielLove this place. A bit out of the way but worth it. Good fishing and all of the even camp sites are first come first serve. Lots of crawfish in the lake, love to take your bait.
September 05 · James DalleskaClean campground with excellent views overlooking Quemado Lake. Lots of Elk and birds of prey to watch in their natural habitat.Be aware, however, if you have small holding tanks on your RV. The USFS site lists this park as having "full RV hookups" but there is only power and water available. You have to go 1/4 mile down the road to the Pinon Campground in order to dump for a $5 fee. There is no dumping of any kind on the premises, to include any wash water or even rinsing out a cup, else you face a $100 fine. If it were not for this issue with the listing, it would be an easy 5 stars.
June 25 · James GreinNice place to camp and fish. Sites are roomy.
