Jon Wilson Yurt

Lake City, CO 81235, USA

4.0
Great place with insane views. Our group had six people and we stayed for three days in the yurt. The experience was somewhere between a camping and glamping. The yurt can support eight people no problem, it has a wood fireplace with chimney and all the basic kitchen utensils to make your stay comfortable. The porta potty however is an adjustment. Throughout our stay we had cellphone network good enough to make video calls, no way to charge your phone though(unless you're carrying a solar charger)! One thing to note is that to reach the yurt, you need to hike 1.2 miles up hill from the road so its best to reach there while the sun is still out as the route gets a little tricky in the darkness. The up hill hike was particularly challenging for the group, but having said that no one in the group can be called fit :P - Ghanshyam Bhutra

The Jon Wilson Yurt stands out as a unique lodging option for discerning outdoor enthusiasts. It's a robust, circular structure designed to withstand mountain conditions, providing a substantial upgrade from traditional tent camping without sacrificing the feeling of being deep in the wilderness. Unlike conventional campgrounds with multiple sites and continuous vehicle access, reaching the Jon Wilson Yurt requires a deliberate 1.2-mile uphill hike from the road, ensuring a peaceful and truly secluded experience once you arrive. This intentional remoteness contributes to its allure, making it a perfect sanctuary for those seeking a genuine escape from the everyday hustle and bustle.

Whether you're planning a multi-generational family adventure, a gathering with friends, or a tranquil retreat for a small group, understanding the distinct features and practical considerations of the Jon Wilson Yurt is key to maximizing your enjoyment. This article will delve into its breathtaking location and the accessibility challenge, detail the comprehensive services and amenities provided, highlight the unique aspects that make it a highly recommended destination, and ultimately explain why this extraordinary yurt is a perfect fit for Colorado locals seeking a memorable and authentic mountain glamping experience.

The Jon Wilson Yurt is spectacularly located near Lake City, CO 81235, USA, placing it within the heart of Colorado's rugged and beautiful San Juan Mountains. This area is renowned for its stunning alpine scenery, extensive trail systems, and a genuine sense of remote wilderness. The yurt's position offers "insane views" of the surrounding peaks and valleys, providing an immediate and profound connection to the high-country environment.

However, accessibility to the Jon Wilson Yurt is a key consideration and part of its adventurous appeal. Reaching the yurt requires a "hike 1.2 miles uphill from the road." This ascent, while manageable for many, can be "particularly challenging for the group" if "no one in the group can be called fit." It's best to plan your arrival "while the sun is still out as the route gets a little tricky in the darkness," especially with gear. The elevation gain is approximately 500 feet over that 1.25 miles from Highway 149. The road (Sawmill Park Road) leading to the trailhead starts steep but is generally two-wheel-drive accessible in summer, though four-wheel-drive may be needed if wet. In winter, snowshoeing or skiing in is required, and a Sherpa service for gear transport via snowmobile may be available for a fee.

Despite the hike-in requirement, this enhances the yurt's seclusion and peacefulness, making the effort well worth the reward. The phone numbers provided, (970) 944-2269 and +1 970-944-2269, would be crucial for coordinating any pre-arrival information or potential gear transport services, reinforcing that this is a managed facility rather than a dispersed camping spot. This blend of accessibility with a backcountry feel makes it perfectly suited for adventurous Colorado locals.

The Jon Wilson Yurt is exceptionally well-equipped, blurring the lines between traditional camping and luxurious glamping. It provides a robust set of services and amenities designed to make a stay comfortable and convenient, even in a secluded mountain environment.

Services Offered:

  • Spacious Accommodation: The yurt is designed to "support eight people no problem," with one review noting a group of six found it very comfortable. The official capacity is now generally listed as 6 people for comfort in the 20-foot diameter yurt.

  • Sleeping Arrangements: Guests are provided with "plenty of air mattresses, mattress pads, pots & pans, and chairs." There are also "fold out cots, old bunks with springs and sleeping pads," ensuring varied sleeping options for the group. Guests should bring their own bedding/sleeping bags.

  • Indoor Heating: It features a "wood fireplace with chimney," ensuring warmth and a cozy atmosphere. All necessary items for making and tending a fire, including firewood, are readily available and provided.

  • Cooking Facilities: The yurt comes with a "true gas stove," propane burners and propane, and "all the basic kitchen utensils." A "table for prep" and a "sink/cutting board table" are also provided, making meal preparation convenient. An oven is also provided (propane). Dishes, pots, pans, and cleaning supplies are available.

  • Outdoor Features: A "deck" provides a comfortable outdoor space with "gorgeous views." There's also a "fire circle with log seats" for outdoor campfires, though an outdoor grill is not provided, guests can bring their own.

  • Lighting: Propane lighting is provided, along with battery-powered electric lanterns and candles.

  • Toilet Facilities: A "port-o-potty" is available for restroom needs. While one review mentioned it was "ready to be emptied," the convenience of an on-site toilet is still a valuable service for a backcountry location.

  • Basic Cell Service: While isolated, the yurt provides "cellphone network good enough to make video calls" (Verizon 1-2 bars), allowing for essential communication despite the remote setting.

  • Trail Markers: The access route is supported with "signs & markers on the trail," assisting with navigation, especially for winter snowshoeing/skiing access.

  • Gear Delivery Service: For winter users, a "Sherpa Service" is available for a fee, transporting heavy gear via snowmobile, allowing groups to travel lighter for the hike in.

  • Pet-Friendly: Dogs are allowed year-round, which is a significant bonus for many Colorado residents traveling with their furry companions.

It's important to note that while many comforts are provided, guests are responsible for bringing their own food, water (in summer, as there's no natural water source directly at the yurt; snowmelt for winter), and charging solutions for electronics, as "no electrical outlets available for use."

The Jon Wilson Yurt offers a series of unique features and highlights that collectively create an exceptional mountain glamping experience. These attributes distinguish it from more conventional camping options and contribute to its high recommendation by past visitors.

Features / Highlights:

  • Insane Views and Beautiful Location: The most frequently lauded feature is the "insane views" and "beautiful location." Perched in the mountains near Lake City, the yurt offers panoramic vistas that are truly breathtaking, providing an unparalleled backdrop for a mountain escape.

  • Perfect Blend of Camping and Glamping: Described as an experience "somewhere between a camping and glamping," it offers the rugged adventure of a backcountry trip with the added comfort of a well-equipped, sturdy shelter. This unique balance appeals to a broad range of outdoor enthusiasts.

  • Seclusion and Peace: Due to the 1.2-mile uphill hike-in, the yurt ensures a "peaceful, secluded" environment. This remoteness guarantees privacy and quiet, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the tranquility of the wilderness without crowds or noise.

  • Well-Maintained and Fully Stocked: Reviews highlight a "well maintained setup" with "everything for making and tending a fire and for cooking" readily available. This includes a true gas stove, wood stove, ample air mattresses, and kitchen utensils, significantly reducing the gear campers need to pack in.

  • Reliable Communication (with caveats): Despite its remote setting, the availability of "cellphone network good enough to make video calls" (Verizon 1-2 bars) is a significant highlight for safety and limited connectivity if desired, offering peace of mind while still encouraging a digital detox.

  • Adventurous Access: The "1.2 miles up hill" hike-in, especially challenging in winter for snowshoeing, is part of the adventure. It creates a sense of accomplishment upon arrival and contributes to the secluded nature of the yurt. Signs and markers on the trail aid navigation.

  • Winter Accessibility: The yurt is open year-round, including for winter users. Its "close proximity to the trailhead" allows groups to arrive in the afternoon and still reach the yurt before sunset, even in winter conditions. A Sherpa service is available for gear transport in winter.

  • Wildlife Opportunities: The remote mountain setting naturally lends itself to potential wildlife sightings, enhancing the wilderness experience.

  • Family-Friendly Potential: Despite the hike, one review noted a "multi-generational group of 7 (2 even being young kids)" made it fine, indicating its suitability for adventurous families.

These features position the Jon Wilson Yurt as a highly desirable destination for those seeking a unique, comfortable, and adventurous mountain retreat in Colorado.

Firstly, the blend of "camping and glamping" hits a sweet spot for many. Colorado locals often seek genuine outdoor adventures but also appreciate comfort after a day of exploring. The yurt provides the immersive backcountry feel of a remote cabin combined with well-appointed amenities like a wood stove, gas range, and comfortable sleeping pads, making it a luxurious base camp for high-altitude pursuits without being overly commercialized.

Secondly, the required 1.2-mile uphill hike-in, while a challenge, is a feature, not a bug.
