Nestled within the breathtaking Cherokee National Forest near Vonore, this campground offers a harmonious blend of natural beauty, recreational activities, and essential amenities for a comfortable stay. It's a place where the sounds of the city fade away, replaced by the gentle rustle of leaves, the call of birds, and the inviting calm of a mountain lake.
Indian Boundary Campground is more than just a place to pitch a tent or park an RV; it's an experience designed for relaxation and adventure. With its focus on providing a serene environment alongside opportunities for various outdoor pursuits, it consistently receives high praise from visitors. Whether you're planning a family vacation, a solo retreat, or an adventure with friends, this campground offers a memorable setting to connect with the stunning landscapes of East Tennessee.
Indian Boundary Campground is conveniently located on the Cherohala Skyway, Forest Service Road, in Vonore, TN 37885, USA. This prime location places it deep within the heart of the Cherokee National Forest, offering immediate access to one of Tennessee's most expansive and beautiful natural areas. Vonore itself is a small community in Monroe County, known for its rural charm and gateway status to the mountains.
The campground's direct access from the Cherohala Skyway is a significant advantage. The Cherohala Skyway is a National Scenic Byway, celebrated for its stunning mountain vistas, sweeping curves, and access to pristine wilderness areas. For motorcyclists and scenic drivers, this connection is particularly appealing. Furthermore, Indian Boundary Campground serves as an excellent base for those looking to explore the legendary "Tail of the Dragon" (US 129), a world-renowned stretch of road popular among motorcyclists and sports car enthusiasts, located a relatively short drive away.
While the setting is wonderfully secluded, visitors should be aware that cell service and Wi-Fi are typically unavailable within the campground. This intentional lack of connectivity fosters a true "unplugged" camping experience, encouraging guests to fully immerse themselves in their surroundings. Despite the remote feel, the campground is accessible via well-maintained forest service roads, making it manageable for various vehicle types, including RVs.
- Electric Hookups: Many campsites at Indian Boundary offer electric hookups, primarily 30 amps, providing essential power for RVs and other camping needs. This is a valuable amenity for those seeking a more comfortable camping experience without relying solely on generators or batteries.
- Spacious and Shady Sites: The campground boasts large, generously sized campsites, many of which are well-shaded by the surrounding forest. This provides a cooler, more comfortable environment, especially during warmer months, and offers a sense of privacy between sites.
- Clean Bathhouses: Indian Boundary Campground provides access to clean and well-maintained bathhouses. These facilities typically include restrooms and showers, ensuring a convenient and hygienic experience for all campers.
- Timed Showers: While the showers are a welcome amenity, it's noted that they are "timed by faucet and you don’t pick the temp." Campers should be prepared for this system, which is common in some public campgrounds to conserve water.
- General Store: A very convenient feature, the on-site general store is a lifesaver for campers. It stocks a variety of items you might need or forget, from basic groceries and camping supplies to firewood and ice, ensuring you don't have to leave the forest to pick up essentials.
- Friendly Hosts: Visitors consistently praise the friendly and helpful campground hosts. These individuals play a crucial role in maintaining the campground, providing assistance, and offering local insights, contributing to a positive camping experience.
- Affordable Rates: At approximately $20.00 per night for electric sites, Indian Boundary Campground offers a fantastic value, making a mountain getaway accessible to a wider range of budgets.
- Beautiful Lake with a Beach: The centerpiece of Indian Boundary Campground is its beautiful lake, complete with a designated swimming beach. This offers a safe and enjoyable area for cooling off during warm days, sunbathing, or simply relaxing by the water's edge.
- Walking Trail Around the Lake: A scenic walking trail encircles the lake, providing a pleasant and easy stroll for all ages. It's perfect for a morning walk, an evening stroll, or just enjoying the tranquility of the lakeside environment.
- Kayaking and Fishing Opportunities: The lake is ideal for non-motorized water activities. Visitors are encouraged to bring their kayaks, canoes, or paddleboards to explore the calm waters. Fishing is also a popular pastime, offering a peaceful way to spend an afternoon.
- Volleyball and Horseshoes Areas: For those looking for some friendly competition, the campground provides areas for games like volleyball and horseshoes, fostering a sense of community and providing entertainment for families and groups.
- Gateway to Scenic Drives: Its location on the Cherohala Skyway and proximity to the Tail of the Dragon makes it an exceptional base for scenic drives through the Great Smoky Mountains and surrounding areas. These drives offer unparalleled mountain views and exhilarating experiences for drivers and riders.
- Abundant Shady Spots: The prevalence of shady campsites is a significant highlight, offering respite from the sun and a cooler environment, enhancing comfort during your stay, especially during the warmer Tennessee summers.
- Unplugged Experience: The lack of cell service and Wi-Fi, while a challenge for some, is a major highlight for others. It encourages a true digital detox, allowing campers to fully immerse themselves in nature and focus on personal connections and outdoor activities without distractions.

Indian Boundary Campground Reviews
Great campground! Plenty of shady spots. Walking trail around the lake. Lake with a beach . Power hook ups and bathrooms close by. Showers are timed by faucet and you don’t pick the temp. No cell service or WiFi but your camping. Bring a kayak and a bike. You’ll have plenty to do.I stayed to ride the Cherohala Skyway and Tail of the dragon. Plenty to see in the surrounding area.
Jun 12, 2025 · Jacob ByerlyLarge campsites, clean bathhouse's and the general store has everything you need in case you forget something. Friendly hosts and the park has everything you need. Beach for swimming or just laying in the sun, trails for hikers, a beautiful lake for kayaks and or fishing, areas with volleyball or horseshoes and more. Be advised the sites have electricity only and most are setup for 30 amps . Each site is $20.00 a night which is fantastic. Great location for long drives through the Smokey Mountains and beautiful mountain views.
May 18, 2025 · Chuck JusticeThis is a very nice campground. The sites are plenty large they are usually shaded. There's a great lake to play in or a walking trail that goes around it and an absolutely fantastic camp store
Jun 23, 2025 · Harvey Mock5 stars isn't enough for Indian Boundary Campground! We camped here for the first time last weekend with another family on loop c. Our loops campground hosts were friendly, informative, and very attentive of our loop. The lots are all set up nicely with space for campers as well as tents. They come equipped with a large picnic table, a firepit with cooking grate and a pole perfect for lights. Our kids loved riding bikes and scooters around the loop and the trails. Although the severe storms made the sand a sticky, mud-like mess, the kids enjoyed the sandy beach area of Indian Boundary Lake. I personally have not been in lake water in over 10 years but enjoyed swimming here with the kids. The water is clean and not too deep! The beach does get very crowded, so make sure you go early and grab your spot. Very safe. Law enforcement does keep an eye on the area and does enforce their alcohol prohibited law! Our families enjoyed fishing at the dock and at the dam. We were told they had just restocked with 7000 catfish but no one caught anything except tiny bluegill and sunperch. The campground general store is also great! Friendly owners and stocked with everything you could possibly need. We look forward to camping again! FYI: if you've never been to this area, be prepared to be completely unplugged from technology as there's no cell service which goes out around 20 minutes before you arrive. Made the trip even better!
