Hunting Island State Park Campground

St Helena Island, SC 29920, USA

4.0
Site #126 was so lovely!! We stayed for 2 nights with 6 total people and 2 tents. I took a star away because a raccoon got INTO our tent, went grocery shopping, and made off with SEVERAL food items. Unzipped our tent, opened our coolers, the hole nine yards! I know this is very common here, but it seems to be an issue that needs to be tended to. Sorry to say because the critter was cute but It’s a problem and not safe. - Jody Stevely

Hunting Island State Park Campground is celebrated for a multitude of features and highlights that make it a truly special camping destination, especially for those of us in South Carolina:

  • Exceptional Beach Access: A primary highlight is the unparalleled proximity to the beach. Regardless of your campsite, the beautiful, uncrowded shoreline is just a short walk away, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, beachcombing, and fishing.
  • Biking and Scootering Opportunities: The park offers extensive opportunities for exploring on bikes or scooters right from your campsite. A highlight is the ability to bike or scooter along the beach (especially at low tide) for miles, including trips to the famous "dead/ghost woods" or boneyard beach, providing unique and scenic adventures.
  • Diverse Campsite Types: The campground offers a mix of sites, from well-spaced and private sites with vegetation (about 50% are considered "great sites") to more open options, catering to different preferences. This allows return visitors to choose sites that best fit their needs.
  • Rustic Charm for a State Park: Unlike highly developed private resorts, Hunting Island maintains a more "rustic" feel for a state park, appealing to those who prefer a less commercialized and more natural camping experience.
  • Clean Facilities: The bathrooms are consistently reported as "clean" with hot showers, a crucial comfort for any camper.
  • Abundant Wildlife: The park is teeming with wildlife. While the presence of raccoons is noted (and campers should secure food meticulously), it also means opportunities to see deer, various bird species, and other animals in their natural habitat.
  • Iconic Lighthouse: The Hunting Island Lighthouse, the only publicly accessible lighthouse in South Carolina, is a major landmark within the park, offering historical interest and panoramic views (when open for climbing).
  • Fishing Pier & Nature Center: A long fishing pier extends into Fripp Inlet, and a Nature Center provides educational exhibits and programs, enhancing the overall park experience.
  • Unpacked Beach: The beach at Hunting Island is consistently described as "not packed," offering a sense of serenity and space that is often hard to find at other coastal destinations.
