The sense of peace and tranquility here is its main draw, making it a favorite among locals who are in the know. It is a true dispersed camping experience at its best, providing a unique mix of raw nature and basic, clean facilities that are hard to find elsewhere.
The Hugh Otte Camping Area is located near Lander, WY 82520, USA, specifically within the Shoshone National Forest and the popular Sinks Canyon. To get there, you'll travel about seven miles on State Highway 131 from Lander, and the camping area will be on your left just past the cattle guard that marks the forest boundary. While the location is relatively easy to find, the road within the camping area itself is noted by many campers as being "pretty rough." It has "lots of big rocks and huge dips," so a vehicle with good clearance is highly recommended.
Despite the rough road, the area is accessible to both tents and campers, with visitors reporting that they have successfully brought in campers and trailers. The road conditions mean you'll need to drive slowly and carefully, but the reward is a beautiful and secluded spot by the river. For those with horses, there is convenient horse trailer parking located across the street from the camping area. The dispersed nature of the sites means you can choose a spot that suits your needs, whether you want to be right by the river or tucked away for more privacy. The area's proximity to Sinks Canyon State Park and its numerous trails also makes it an excellent base camp for hiking and other outdoor activities.
Public Restrooms: The camping area has vault toilets, which are noted by reviewers as being "super clean."
Public Shower: While running water is listed, a public shower is not a standard amenity at this type of dispersed site. It’s important to note that the presence of "running water" typically refers to the river, and not potable water facilities.
Bear Boxes: For your safety and to protect local wildlife, bear boxes are available on-site for food storage. This is a critical amenity for camping in bear country.
On-site Parking: On-site parking is available, though the roads are unpaved and can be rough. Horse trailer parking is also available across the street.
Tent and Camper Sites: The area is suitable for both tent camping and bringing in campers or trailers, although some sites are more accessible than others due to the road conditions. Sites are identified by rock fire rings.
Riverside Location: The main highlight of Hugh Otte is its beautiful location on the river. Many campsites are right on the water, offering stunning views and the relaxing sounds of the Popo Agie River.
Dispersed Camping: This is dispersed camping at its finest. There is no official campground host or reservation system, offering a true first-come, first-served experience that gives you more freedom and privacy.
Horse Trailer Parking: A designated parking area for horse trailers across the street is a significant feature for equestrians who want to camp and explore the surrounding trails.
Proximity to Sinks Canyon State Park: Located just a short distance from Sinks Canyon, the camping area provides easy access to all the park has to offer, including hiking trails, rock climbing, and the famous Sinks and Rise geological formations.
Good for Kids: With plenty of open space and the river nearby, the area is a great place for children to explore and enjoy the outdoors.

Hugh Otte Camping Area Reviews
Dispersed camping at it's best on the river. Vaulted toilet and bear boxes on site. Horse trailer parking across the street. You can bring a camper in or tent. They say right campers at most but I see more sites than that. The road is pretty rough in the camping area as soon as you turn off the owned road so be ready for that.
