Howard Meadows Campground

4.0
I am 13 and currently in the Boy Scouts of America. I Went to Howard Meadow campgrounds with my dad about two weeks ago for five days and four nights. The maps had us going in circles on the way up there, but when we arrived, it was very nice. We had the whole place to ourselves until the very last day. We weren’t right on the lake. It was about a 15-minute hike from the campgrounds. There is only one accessible beach on the lake. The rest of the lake is surrounded by vegetation, but it’s beautiful, with plenty of fish. We think the fish are smallmouth bass. Didn’t catch or see any trout, despite reading it’s stocked with them. Mostly small fish, but we heard several big ones’ splashes each day. The lake drops off fast and steep from the beach. My dad and I went swimming a lot in the lake. It starts off pretty warm, but gets cold really fast. There’s no running water, so make sure you bring your own. It was really hot!!! I got badly sunburnt on the back of my neck. Although we could hear a lot of birds and, at night, crickets and company, we saw surprisingly little wildlife besides fish, squirrels, and lizards. We didn’t see deer until the drive home. Overall, this campsite was amazing and I recommend it. It is a remote gem. I hope to go there again some day. - David Baker

Howard Meadows Campground Introduce

Hello, California adventurers! Are you dreaming of a camping experience that truly gets you away from it all, where the sounds of nature prevail and solitude is your closest companion? Look no further than Howard Meadows Campground, a wonderfully remote and exceptionally peaceful destination nestled deep within the Mendocino National Forest, near Covelo, California. This is not your typical crowded campground; it's a "remote gem," as described by happy campers, offering a genuine wilderness escape for those willing to venture off the beaten path.

Howard Meadows Campground provides an unparalleled opportunity to disconnect from the digital world and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Northern California. It’s a place where you can enjoy quiet nights under a sky full of stars, wake up to the sounds of birds, and spend your days exploring without the usual distractions. If you're seeking a no-frills, quiet getaway where you can truly recharge your spirit, fish in a serene lake, and enjoy the simple pleasures of outdoor living, Howard Meadows Campground might just be your next favorite destination. It promises an experience of peace and quiet that is increasingly rare in our bustling world.

Location and Accessibility

Howard Meadows Campground is located on an Unnamed Road, Covelo, CA 95428, USA, deep within the Mendocino National Forest. Its remote setting is a significant part of its appeal, offering a true escape from urban and even semi-urban environments. However, this remoteness also means specific considerations for accessibility. Based on recent visitor experiences, navigation to the campground can be a bit tricky, with map applications sometimes leading in circles.

The most reliable way to access Howard Meadows Campground is by entering the Little Doe Camp off M1 and then continuously following the road, keeping an eye out for signs leading to Howard Lake. A crucial detail to note is the requirement for a 4WD vehicle. The journey involves crossing a creek on a dirt road, which necessitates the capabilities of a four-wheel-drive vehicle. This makes the campground unsuitable for standard passenger cars, RVs, or travel trailers. It’s an adventure just getting there, and this journey adds to the feeling of having truly reached a secluded haven. While the campground itself is Howard Meadows, many choose to continue on to Howard Lake itself, which is often the ultimate destination for many visitors due to its picturesque setting and fishing opportunities. Be prepared for unpaved roads and potentially challenging terrain, which only enhances the sense of a wilderness expedition.

Services Offered

  • Primitive Camping Sites: Howard Meadows Campground offers primitive camping, meaning sites are undeveloped. There are no designated, numbered sites, and no hookups for water or electricity. Campers should be fully self-sufficient.

  • Vault Toilets: One of the notable amenities, mentioned by visitors, are vault bathrooms. These are non-flushing toilets, and while basic, have been described as "surprisingly clean." It’s always a good idea to bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

  • No Running Water: There is no running water available at the campground. Visitors must bring their entire water supply for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and personal hygiene. This is a crucial consideration for planning your trip.

  • No Trash Services: Howard Meadows operates under a "pack everything in, pack everything out" policy. There are no trash receptacles, so campers are responsible for removing all their waste, leaving no trace behind.

  • Quiet and Secluded Environment: The primary "service" is the immense peace and quiet. With few other campers, especially outside of peak times, you can expect a truly tranquil experience.

  • Access to Howard Lake: While the campground isn't directly on the lake, it offers access to Howard Lake via approximately a 15-minute hike. This provides opportunities for swimming and fishing.

Features / Highlights

  • Unmatched Peace and Solitude: This is by far the most celebrated feature. Visitors consistently praise the campground for its quietness and the feeling of having the place to themselves. It’s an ideal escape for those seeking true solitude away from crowded recreational areas.

  • Access to Howard Lake: Despite the short hike, Howard Lake is a major draw. It's described as beautiful, surrounded by vegetation with one accessible beach. The lake offers great swimming opportunities (warm near the surface, quickly becoming cold) and fishing. While stocking information suggests trout, visitors primarily noted catching or seeing smallmouth bass and hearing splashes of larger fish.

  • 4WD Adventure to Reach: The requirement for a 4WD vehicle and navigating through forest roads and creek crossings adds an element of adventure to the trip itself. For off-road enthusiasts, the journey to Howard Meadows is part of the fun.

  • Clean Vault Toilets: A surprising highlight for a primitive campground, the vault bathrooms have been noted as "surprisingly clean" by visitors, a small but significant comfort in a remote setting.

  • Rich Natural Sounds: Campers can expect to hear plenty of birds during the day and the symphony of crickets and other nocturnal creatures at night, enhancing the immersive wilderness experience.

  • Stargazing Potential: Being far from urban light pollution, Howard Meadows offers exceptional opportunities for stargazing on clear nights, providing a breathtaking view of the celestial sphere.
