April 2025The location, lake and camp spots are 5 stars. The toilets and outhouses are 2 stars. FCFS, with drop box to pay. Very weak cell signal.Spots are well spaced, and views of the cypress trees in the lake are beautiful. It is quiet with lots of wild life sounds. Mature trees abound. In my mid week visit I was the only camper. The vault toilets are in disrepair, and not recently pumped. The bathroom is rough. No dump station here, but there is one at the east side camp. The dock at the boat ramp at camp is fine, and the boat ramp looks serviceable. There are a number of other docks that are falling apart. - James Jenkins

Horseshoe Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area-West Campground is located at 21204 Promised Land Rd, Miller City, IL 62962, USA. This address places it squarely in Alexander County, in the southernmost part of Illinois. The location is significant for its unique natural features, reminiscent of southern cypress swamps, which are a rare sight in more northern latitudes. It's situated just east of Illinois Route 3, approximately 7 miles north of Cairo, and about 2 miles south of Olive Branch.

Accessibility to the West Campground is generally straightforward for Illinois residents. The drive to this part of the state, while perhaps longer for those coming from northern or central Illinois, is scenic and leads into a region known for its natural beauty.
