Horseshoe Bend Float Camp

Fremont, MO 63941, USA

5.0
I normally camp with friends on gravel bars, but this camp is pretty cool. We came across it while hiking to go fish the bend. I think there were four or five sites and most if not all had a fire ring with grill attachment. All of them had lamp post hangers and some had rotting picnic benches. There is one composting toilet. The site is raised off of the river so it will likely be safe if the water were to rise at night while sleeping. - Brad Ferguson

Horseshoe Bend Float Camp Introduce

Introduction / Overview

For Missourians yearning for a truly off-the-grid outdoor adventure, Horseshoe Bend Float Camp presents an exceptional opportunity to immerse yourselves in the raw beauty of the Ozarks. Nestled along the banks of the federally protected Eleven Point National Scenic River, this primitive float camp is designed for those who appreciate solitude and an authentic wilderness experience. Unlike typical drive-in campgrounds, Horseshoe Bend is primarily accessible by floating down the river, ensuring a peaceful atmosphere free from the noise and crowds often found elsewhere. Past visitors have praised its unique features, noting the "pretty cool" sites and the safety provided by its elevated position above the river, a crucial detail for river campers. With basic but essential amenities, it offers a chance to reconnect with nature, enjoy the serene sounds of the river, and create lasting memories under the expansive Missouri sky. It’s an ideal spot for float trip enthusiasts, anglers, or anyone simply looking to unplug and embrace the tranquility of one of Missouri's most pristine waterways. The natural beauty and undisturbed setting make Horseshoe Bend Float Camp a standout destination for local outdoor adventurers.

Location and Accessibility

Horseshoe Bend Float Camp is located at Fremont, MO 63941, USA, deep within the scenic Mark Twain National Forest. Its distinctive charm stems from its primary access method: it is predominantly a "float-in" campground, meaning you'll arrive by boat, typically a canoe, kayak, or raft, along the Eleven Point National Scenic River. The camp is situated approximately 9.5 miles downstream from Greer Crossing, a common put-in point for float trips. The nearest upriver access point is McDowell Primitive Access. This river-only accessibility ensures a truly secluded experience, as only those willing to paddle or float will reach its tranquil shores. While there are no direct roads to the campsites, visitors driving to the area will use Forest Service roads to reach various river access points, such as those at Greer Spring or Turner Mill. These roads, though often gravel, are generally well-maintained. Missouri locals will find the journey to Horseshoe Bend Float Camp to be an adventure in itself, passing through the beautiful landscapes of the Ozarks before transitioning to the peaceful currents of the Eleven Point River. Planning your float trip carefully, considering river mileage and your group's paddling ability, is key to a smooth and enjoyable arrival at this unique Ozark destination.
