Hopper Creek Group Campground

Natural Bridge Station, VA 24579, USA

4.0
This is a really lovely camping area! Plenty of room to move around, a grill, loads of picnic tables, and a huge firepit! It's amazing to see the stars in the night sky, fall asleep listening to the creek, enjoy the peace and quiet. I recommend bringing bugspray, plenty of mosquitoes out there. Locals sell bundles of camp fire wood, so you'll be able to have s'mores each evening. There is a vault toilet, but no running water, so you might want to bring hand sanitizer and some motion sensor LED lighting so you won't have to juggle holding a flashlight while taking care of business. I'm looking forward to going back! It was amazing in early summer, I can't wait to see it in the Fall! - Leslie E Brady

Hopper Creek Group Campground, while offering a rustic experience, provides essential services designed to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable group camping trip for Virginia locals. Understanding its designation as a group tent-only campground, the services focus on facilitating a streamlined outdoor adventure.

  • Group Tent Camping: The campground is specifically designated for tent camping only, accommodating up to 50 people. This ensures that groups have ample space and privacy, which is a significant advantage for larger gatherings.

  • Tent Pads: To make pitching tents easier and more comfortable, tent pads are provided at the site. These designated areas help create level surfaces for sleeping and protect the natural ground.

  • Picnic Tables: The site is well-equipped with 12 picnic tables, offering plenty of seating for meals, games, and social gatherings. This eliminates the need for groups to bring numerous individual tables.

  • Pedestal Double Grill: A convenient pedestal double grill is available for cooking, allowing campers to easily prepare meals over charcoal or wood. This is a practical amenity for group cooking.

  • Large Campfire Circle: A highlight of Hopper Creek is its fantastic large central campfire pit. This communal fire ring is perfect for evening gatherings, storytelling, s'mores, and enjoying the warmth of a crackling fire under the stars. Locals often sell bundles of campfire wood nearby, making it easy to keep the fire going.

  • Vault Toilet: The campground features a vault toilet, which is a non-flush restroom facility. Reviews highlight that these are generally very clean and well-maintained. While there's no running water, bringing hand sanitizer and perhaps a motion-sensor LED light is a good tip for convenience.

  • Trash Collection: Trash collection services are provided, helping to keep the campground clean and minimizing the impact on the natural environment. Campers are encouraged to pack out what they pack in where possible, but designated trash receptacles are available.

It is important to note that drinking water is not provided at Hopper Creek Group Campground, so campers must bring their own supply. However, showers are available at the nearby Cave Mountain Lake Recreation Area (at the beach bathhouse) for those who wish to freshen up, though a day-use fee would apply for entry into Cave Mountain Lake.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a U.S. Forest Service campground, Hopper Creek Group Campground operates under a fixed fee structure rather than offering seasonal promotions or discounts in the traditional commercial sense. Its primary "special offer" is its inherent value: providing an affordable and dedicated group camping experience within a pristine natural setting.

  • Inexpensive Group Fee: Reviews highlight that the fee for reserving Hopper Creek Group Campground is "very inexpensive." This makes it an exceptionally cost-effective option for large groups looking to camp together, especially when compared to booking multiple individual campsites or other types of group accommodations. The exact fee can be found on the Recreation.gov website when making a reservation, but its affordability is consistently noted as a major benefit.

  • Exclusive Group Use: The fact that only one group can reserve the area at a time means that your group will have the entire campground to yourselves. This exclusivity is a significant advantage, offering unparalleled privacy and solitude, which can be seen as a premium feature without an additional cost. It allows for a truly immersive group experience without the presence of other campers outside your party.

  • Access to Extensive National Forest Lands: Your camping fee grants you access to and the ability to explore the vast George Washington & Jefferson National Forest, with its numerous trails, natural features, and recreational opportunities. This immense natural playground is effectively "included" with your stay, providing countless hours of free activities.

Booking for Hopper Creek Group Campground is typically done through Recreation.gov, where you can check availability and current pricing.
