4.0
My family had a great experience at this campground. The campsites were immaculate with new tent pads, a fire pit, camp stove stand and BBQ. The water faucet was close to our spot, was ice cold and tasted so nice. The walk to the river was short and accessible for our small children. The bathrooms were always clean and stocked. The camp host, Dave was very friendly and helpful while not being over bearing like some camp hosts can be. He showed up with firewood at the perfect time each day. My Mom's battery died and when I asked if he had phone service so we could call AAA, he just came up immediately with a jump pack and started her car! No cell service with T-Mobile. This place is a true gem. No bears. There is a trail head at the rear of the campground with offers stunning views of the valley. Will definitely be going back. 10/10 - Sara Woods

Location and Accessibility

Hope Valley Campground is ideally situated on Blue Lakes Rd, Markleeville, CA 96120, USA. This location places it squarely within the breathtaking Hope Valley, a scenic subalpine valley in the Sierra Nevada mountains, part of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The campground is nestled among Jeffrey and Lodgepole pines at an elevation of approximately 7,300 feet, offering stunning views of the surrounding forested mountains and meadows.

Access to Hope Valley Campground is generally straightforward. From South Lake Tahoe, campers can take Highway 89 over Luther Pass. At the junction of Highways 88 and 89, make a right and travel 2 miles west on Highway 88, then turn south onto Blue Lakes Road and proceed to the campground. The roads leading to the campground are well-maintained, accommodating a variety of vehicles including RVs and trailers (up to 45 feet). While its elevation means it's typically open from mid-May through mid-September (weather permitting), it's always wise to check current road conditions with the managing Forest Service district before embarking on your trip, especially during shoulder seasons. This location provides a perfect balance of feeling remote enough to offer a true escape, yet accessible enough for a convenient family trip.

  • Immaculate Campsites: Each campsite is meticulously maintained, featuring "new tent pads," a "fire pit" for evening campfires, a "camp stove stand" for easy cooking, and a "BBQ pedestal" for grilling. Some sites even come with two picnic tables and "two spots for tents," catering to various group sizes.
  • Bear-Proof Food Storage: A crucial amenity in this bear country, all campsites are equipped with robust, "anti-bear overnight food storage lockers" (bear boxes). These are noted as "excellent" and "fairly new," providing peace of mind for safe food storage.
  • Potable Drinking Water: Water faucets are conveniently located close to campsites, providing "ice cold and tasted so nice" potable drinking water. This is a significant convenience that enhances the camping experience.
  • Clean and Stocked Bathrooms: The "bathrooms were always clean and stocked," a standout feature for pit toilets. While they are "open pit toilets with no sink," their cleanliness and lack of odor are highly praised, making them surprisingly pleasant to use.
