Holter Lake Campground boasts an excellent location on the picturesque Holter Lake, along the Missouri River, making it highly accessible for Montanans. The address, 1380 Beartooth Rd, Wolf Creek, MT 59648, USA, places it conveniently in west-central Montana, approximately 45 miles north of Helena and about 60 miles south of Great Falls. This makes it a feasible driving destination from two of Montana's major cities, allowing for relatively short and scenic travel.
Getting to the campground is straightforward, with clear directions from Interstate 15. From I-15 North (if coming from Helena), take Exit 226 to Wolf Creek. Turn right towards Recreation Road, cross the railroad tracks, then turn left onto Recreation Road. After crossing the Missouri River/steel bridge, turn right onto Beartooth Road and continue for approximately 2.3 miles, and the campground will be on your right. If coming from I-15 South (from Great Falls), take Exit 234 to Craig. Turn left towards Craig, cross the Missouri River, and then turn right onto Recreation Road. Travel approximately 5 miles, then before crossing the Missouri River/steel bridge, turn left onto Beartooth Road and continue 2.3 miles to the campground on your right. While one review mentions a "20 minutes" drive from the interstate, this typically refers to the scenic winding roads once off the main highway, leading you directly to the lake's edge.
The location on Holter Lake means direct access to the water for various recreational activities. The campground's proximity to the small community of Wolf Creek provides limited services like gas and a small store, but for more extensive supplies, Helena or Great Falls are within a reasonable drive. This balance ensures campers can enjoy a remote feel while still having necessary amenities within reach for longer stays.
The journey to Holter Lake Campground is part of the experience, offering stunning views of the Missouri River valley and the Sleeping Giant Wilderness Study Area. This scenic approach sets the tone for a relaxing and immersive outdoor adventure, confirming why it's a preferred spot for those familiar with Montana's diverse landscapes. Best campground! Great view! Friendly staff. I stayed in 15A. ADA space. Will camp here again.
Jun 06, 2025 · MarissaReally nice campsite on the Missouri River. Getting from the interstate to the campground takes about 20 minutes. The tent sites are on a flat lawn, so you don’t have that much privacy, but the sites are fairly big. Lots of people come to the lake for fishing, so there’s also a lot of activity in the morning. Vault toilets were clean. The lake is in a really beautiful valley with great views. I’d come back here.
Jun 06, 2023 · Ana AlonsoThe lake and campground are very nice. Please be aware that any site above 33 however is literally a single parking space in the parking lot. This could have been more clear on the reservation page. Luckily we didn't have people on both sides of us so we could take up 2 spaces. We would not have been able to get our slide out otherwise. Also, no picnic table or fire ring at the parking lot sites. If you are going to have people camp in a parking lot, then the fee needs to be less than those sites that have space, grass, a table and a fire ring.
