Hello, fellow Arizona campers! Are you looking for a spontaneous and refreshing escape from the intense summer heat of the valley? Hilltop Campground Loop A near Prescott is an excellent choice for a well-deserved break. Situated in the beautiful Prescott National Forest, this campground offers a classic camping experience with the added benefit of being a non-reservation, first-come, first-served site. It's a fantastic spot for those who appreciate the flexibility of a spontaneous trip, with its cool climate, beautiful scenery, and close proximity to the popular Lynx Lake.
Hilltop Campground Loop A is a hidden gem for many Arizonans, providing a much-needed respite from the sweltering temperatures of places like Phoenix. One visitor described the temperature drop from 112 degrees in the valley to a comfortable 76 degrees after a cloud and rain event, highlighting the appeal of its high-elevation location. The campground is praised for its great shade, especially in the tent areas, which makes for a more comfortable stay. Its "first-come, first-served" policy means that if you arrive early enough, you can often secure a beautiful spot even on a weekend, offering a level of spontaneity that can be hard to find at other popular sites.
Hilltop Campground Loop A is located in Prescott, AZ 86303, USA, within the Prescott National Forest. It sits at an elevation of approximately 5,700 feet, providing a mild, pleasant climate, especially during the spring and summer. The campground is just a short drive from the city of Prescott and is also easily accessible from other parts of the state. Its proximity to Lynx Lake, a popular recreation area, means that visitors have a wide range of activities to enjoy without having to travel far from their campsite.
It is important to note, however, that while the general area is accessible, some individual campsites may have specific access considerations. For instance, one reviewer mentioned that their site was not wheelchair accessible, requiring them to go down several steps to reach the camping area. While this provides a secluded feel, it’s a detail to consider if accessibility is a concern. The non-reservation policy is a huge plus for those who prefer to be flexible with their travel plans. A Friday morning arrival often leaves a few spots open, but it's always wise to have a backup plan.
Public Restrooms: The campground provides access to public restrooms, a crucial amenity for any comfortable camping trip. It's worth noting, based on a customer review, that it's best to set up your camp away from the bathrooms to avoid any potential sewer odors if the wind changes direction.
Running Water: Running water is available at the campground, with a faucet conveniently located near the campsites, as mentioned in a customer review. This is a valuable service for drinking, cooking, and other needs, and it contributes significantly to the overall comfort of the stay.
Tent Sites: The campground is well-suited for tent camping, with designated areas for pitching tents. However, one review noted that the pads can sometimes be too small for larger tents, so it's a good idea to scout the site before setting up.
On-site Parking: On-site parking is available, providing a convenient place to park your vehicle right at your campsite. This makes unloading and setting up camp much easier.
Picnic Tables: Each site comes with a picnic table, perfect for outdoor dining and preparing meals. Some of these are concrete and may be in direct sun during the day, so utilizing the shady areas is key.
Hiking Opportunities: Hilltop Campground Loop A is a fantastic base camp for hikers. The area offers a variety of trails, including "kid-friendly hikes," which makes it a great choice for families. A customer review highlighted that the hiking trails are "not hard at all," making them enjoyable for people of all ages and skill levels. The stunning scenery and natural beauty make every hike a rewarding experience.
Good for Kids: The campground is explicitly noted as being "good for kids," and with its safe, natural environment and easy hiking trails, it's a perfect place for families to spend time together. The proximity to Lynx Lake offers additional opportunities for family fun, from playing by the water to fishing.
Dogs Allowed: This is a pet-friendly campground, allowing you to bring your dogs along for the adventure. It's a huge plus for many campers who want to include their furry family members in their outdoor activities.
First-Come, First-Served: A major highlight of this loop is its non-reservation policy. This provides flexibility for last-minute trips and a welcome alternative to fully booked campgrounds, especially during peak season. Arriving early on a Friday morning can give you a good chance of securing a great spot.
Stunning Lake Views: The campground is a quick drive from Lynx Lake's South Shore, which is known for its beautiful views and recreational opportunities. The close proximity allows campers to enjoy the best of both worlds: a secluded, wooded campsite and easy access to a popular lake.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Stayed there the weekend of July 12th, camp site #3. A very nice getaway from the Phoenix heat which was 112. At the camp site the direct sun was hot but when the clouds came and the rain, it cooled to a nice 76. The concrete picnic table had full sun most of the day, but the tent area had a nice shade almost all the time. Not accessible as you need to go down several steps down to get to your camping area. This site was spread out nicely but the pad for the tent was too small for our tent. We were a little too close to the bathrooms which when the wind changed direction, you get the strong sewer odor. I would stay far away from that as possible for that reason. The big plus was that Hilltop campground A is Non reservation, first come, first served. When we went Friday morning, there were 3 spots available to choose from. The camp host was very friendly and helpful. Drinking water was close by. Lynx Lake South shore is a quick drive from here.
