Highland Beach

Florida, USA

5.0
Plan around nice weather and you'll enjoy every minute of the trip. Choose poorly and you'll be bailing out your boat or kayak and hanging your clothes in the palm trees to dry.I witnessed someone who anchored their boat a few hundred yards offshore because at low tide the beach exposes nearly 100 yards of extra muddy, clay-like beach. They woke up to their boat on the ground and completely full of water. They even had a few ballyhoo inside. The fishing around here is great. We caught some nice trout and snapper for dinner.Find a place off the beach to make camp (plenty of room and dry). I'm pretty sure you're permitted to make a fire.Beautiful spot to camp and totally secluded. - Jim Wellman

Highland Beach Introduce

For us Floridians, the allure of a pristine beach, the gentle lull of waves, and the thrill of a secluded outdoor escape are deeply ingrained. While our state is famous for its vibrant coastal cities and bustling tourist destinations, there remains a profound desire among locals to discover those hidden gems where nature takes center stage. Highland Beach, Florida, is one such place, offering a unique camping experience that promises tranquility, breathtaking scenery, and fantastic opportunities for outdoor recreation, all away from the typical crowds. It's not your average manicured campground; instead, it offers a raw, authentic Florida beach camping adventure for those willing to embrace its natural charm.

Highland Beach embodies the spirit of true wilderness camping, where the elements play a significant role in your experience. Here, you can truly disconnect and immerse yourself in the natural rhythms of the coast. Whether you're an avid angler, a seasoned kayaker, or simply someone yearning for a peaceful night under the stars with the sound of the ocean, Highland Beach provides a canvas for unforgettable memories. This article will guide you through what makes this coastal haven a must-visit for Florida locals, detailing its location, the unique opportunities it offers, and what you should know to plan your perfect secluded getaway.

Location and Accessibility

Highland Beach is not a typical developed campground with a specific address for direct navigation. Instead, it refers to a stretch of natural, secluded coastline in Florida where primitive beach camping is possible. While the provided address is simply "Florida, USA," it's understood by those familiar with this kind of camping that Highland Beach is a more remote, undeveloped coastal area. It's often described as a beach campsite located between Highland Point and the beaches north of the mouth of Rodger's River, within what is likely a wilderness or backcountry area, possibly within the broader Everglades National Park region or a similar remote coastal preserve.

Accessibility to Highland Beach is primarily by boat or kayak, as indicated by visitor experiences. This remote access is precisely what contributes to its secluded and pristine nature. You won't find paved roads leading directly to designated campsites with picnic tables and bathhouses here. Instead, access involves navigating coastal waters, landing on the beach, and setting up camp. This adventure in itself is part of the appeal for those seeking a true wilderness experience. It's crucial for campers to understand that this is not a drive-up site and requires careful planning, including checking tide charts and weather conditions, as well as being self-sufficient. This level of accessibility means it attracts a specific type of outdoor enthusiast who values solitude and a raw connection with nature over modern conveniences. It's a place where the journey is as much a part of the experience as the destination itself, truly for those who appreciate the less-traveled path along Florida's stunning coast.

Services Offered

It's important to set expectations for "services" at Highland Beach, as it is a primitive, secluded camping location, not a developed campground with typical amenities. The services here are provided by nature itself and the self-sufficiency of the campers.

  • Natural Campsites: Campers find their own spots off the immediate beach, typically in dry areas away from the high tide line, often among palm trees. There are no designated, numbered sites or reservations in the traditional sense.

  • Opportunities for Campfires: Visitors have indicated that campfires are permitted, likely within self-made fire rings or designated areas to prevent wildfires. This offers the classic camping experience of cooking over an open flame and enjoying a crackling fire under the stars.

  • Beach Access: Direct, unimpeded access to a wide, open beach for walking, playing in the sand, and enjoying the coastal environment. The beach can be extensive at low tide.

  • Fishing Opportunities: The waters around Highland Beach are reported to offer excellent fishing. Campers can enjoy catching fish directly from the shore or from their boats/kayaks, with mentions of trout and snapper being caught for dinner.

  • Wildlife Viewing: The secluded nature of the area provides prime opportunities for observing local wildlife, particularly birds, and enjoying the undisturbed natural ecosystem.

  • Seclusion and Solitude: While not a "service" in the commercial sense, the primary offering of Highland Beach is its complete seclusion. This allows for an unparalleled sense of peace and privacy, making it ideal for those wishing to escape crowds and immerse themselves in nature.

  • Stunning Scenery: The natural beauty of the area, with its large coconut palms and pristine coastline, serves as the main "amenity," providing a picturesque backdrop for camping and outdoor activities.

  • Escape from the Ordinary: For Floridians accustomed to more developed coastal areas, Highland Beach offers a distinct departure, providing a raw and unfiltered outdoor adventure that feels worlds away from the urban hustle.

Contact Information

Given the nature of Highland Beach as a remote, undeveloped camping area rather than a commercial campground, there isn't a direct phone number or specific office for reservations or inquiries. This kind of "camping" typically falls under broader state or national park backcountry rules if it's within a protected area. For the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding regulations, permits, or access to such secluded coastal areas in Florida, it's best to consult the relevant authorities.

Address: Florida, USA (Specific access points are remote and often by boat/kayak only. Consult local marine charts or wilderness area maps for precise navigation.)

General guidance for remote Florida coastal camping often involves:

  • Checking with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) or Florida State Parks for regulations regarding primitive camping in coastal areas.

  • If believed to be within Everglades National Park or a similar federal designation, contacting the National Park Service for backcountry permits and rules.

  • Consulting local marine authorities or fishing guides who may have knowledge of specific access points and conditions.

Due to its secluded nature and the lack of traditional facilities, direct phone contact for Highland Beach as a campground is not applicable. Planning a trip here relies more on self-reliance, knowledge of coastal conditions, and adherence to general backcountry camping principles.

Conclusion: Why Highland Beach is Suitable for Locals

For us Floridians, Highland Beach represents the quintessential escape to the wild, untouched beauty of our state's coast. It’s not a place for those seeking manicured lawns, electrical hookups, or poolside amenities. Instead, it’s a haven for the adventurous spirit, the angler, the kayaker, and anyone yearning for a profound connection with nature that feels truly off the grid. This very authenticity is what makes it exceptionally suitable for locals who appreciate Florida’s wilder side.

The allure begins with its unparalleled seclusion. In a state brimming with popular beaches, finding a spot where you can genuinely feel alone with the ocean, without the din of crowds or constant commercial activity, is a rare treasure. Highland Beach offers that precious solitude, allowing for a deep sense of peace and rejuvenation that only true wilderness can provide. You can wake up to the sounds of waves, cast a line directly from the shore for your dinner, and spend evenings by a campfire under a sky full of stars, far from city lights.

Moreover, for those who love fishing, this spot is a local legend. The reports of catching "nice trout and snapper for dinner" highlight a real opportunity for an immersive fishing experience, turning your camping trip into a self-sufficient culinary adventure. It's a chance to truly live off the land and water, even if just for a few days. The access by boat or kayak, while requiring a bit more planning and effort, only enhances the sense of accomplishment and discovery, ensuring that those who reach Highland Beach truly value the experience.

While the reviews wisely caution about the need to plan around the weather and the challenges of the muddy, clay-like beach at low tide, these are simply part of the primitive camping experience. For Floridians who understand our unique coastal environment, these aren't deterrents but rather aspects to respect and prepare for. Knowing where to set up camp—off the beach in drier areas—is key to a comfortable stay.

In essence, Highland Beach offers a truly authentic and enriching outdoor adventure that resonates deeply with the local desire for unspoiled nature. It’s a place to create unforgettable memories, test your wilderness skills, and rediscover the raw, beautiful heart of Florida, all without the need for a plane ticket to a far-off "ocean" destination. For the intrepid Floridian, Highland Beach is not just a campground; it’s a call to the wild, offering a refreshing and vital escape right in our backyard.
