Welcome to **Hermit Island Campground**, a truly iconic and beloved destination that embodies the quintessential Maine coastal camping experience. For those of us who live in Maine and seek to truly disconnect, immerse ourselves in nature, and create enduring family memories by the sea, Hermit Island is not just a campground – it's a cherished tradition. Unlike many modern camping resorts, Hermit Island prides itself on its rustic charm, inviting campers to truly "rough it with a tent in the woods," a philosophy deeply appreciated by its devoted visitors who return year after year. We understand that finding a place that preserves the wild essence of Maine, offering pristine natural beauty over polished amenities, is a treasure, and Hermit Island stands as a shining example.
Since its establishment in 1952, Hermit Island Campground has captivated generations, maintaining a slow-paced atmosphere that harmonizes perfectly with its surroundings. It's a place where the sounds of the ocean and the rustle of leaves replace the hum of everyday life. This article will guide you through what makes Hermit Island Campground so special, from its unique island setting and commitment to a traditional camping experience to the essential services and remarkable features that solidify its status as a premier, albeit rugged, coastal retreat for Maine locals. Prepare to discover why so many consider "Hermits" their ultimate Maine camping paradise.
**Hermit Island Campground Office** is located at **42 Front St, Bath, ME 04530, USA**. It's important for Mainers to note that this Bath address serves as the **winter mailing address and primary contact point for reservations and general inquiries**. The actual campground, **Hermit Island Campground**, is situated on a 255-acre peninsula connected to the mainland by a sand causeway in **Phippsburg, ME**. The physical address for the campground is 6 Hermit Island Road, Phippsburg, ME 04562.
This unique location on a private island-like peninsula at the tip of Small Point provides a remarkable sense of seclusion and immersion in coastal nature. For Maine locals, reaching Hermit Island typically involves a scenic drive down the Phippsburg peninsula, a journey that itself sets the tone for a true getaway. While the office is in Bath, the destination is a world apart, offering an unparalleled coastal experience.
Accessibility to the campground involves crossing a sand barrier, which adds to its distinctive charm and helps maintain its rustic feel. Guests can drive directly onto the island, but once there, the preference is to explore on foot or by bicycle. The proximity to Bath means that larger towns with groceries, restaurants, and other amenities are within a reasonable driving distance before you make your way to the island's tranquil embrace. This blend of accessible remoteness makes Hermit Island an ideal, distinctive escape for those of us in Maine seeking an authentic coastal wilderness adventure.
Hermit Island Campground, while known for its rustic, "roughing it" philosophy, provides a thoughtful set of essential services designed to support a comfortable and environmentally responsible camping experience.
Diverse Campsite Options: The campground offers 271 distinct campsites (tent, pop-up trailers up to 25 feet, and truck campers only – no RVs or hard-topped campers). These sites are classified into "ocean prime," "prime," "choice," and "value," based on location and views (e.g., ocean views, wooded, semi-private). Each site comes with a fire pit, a picnic table, and a designated parking spot for one vehicle.
Restroom Facilities: Hermit Island provides a combination of "flushing toilets" and "pit toilets" (outhouses) scattered throughout the island, ensuring convenient access from most sites. Reviews consistently highlight that these facilities, while basic, are kept clean and in good shape.
Complimentary Hot Showers: Free hot showers are available in several locations, usually within the flush toilet buildings. This is a highly appreciated amenity for campers after a day of exploring beaches and trails.
On-Site General Store (Kelp Shed): The "Kelp Shed" serves as the campground headquarters and a well-stocked general store. It offers a "good selection" of essentials, including groceries, ice, firewood, camping gear, and even fresh local lobsters and steamers (with rental pots available), ensuring campers have convenient access to supplies.
Snack Bar: A snack bar is available in-season at the Kelp Shed, serving "breakfast, lunch, and dinner," and offering treats like ice cream. This provides a convenient dining option for those who prefer not to cook every meal.
Boat Rentals & Marina: Hermit Island features a full marina where campers can rent kayaks, canoes, and rowboats. Moorings are also available for those bringing their own boats, and there's a boat ramp for easy water access.
Laundry Facilities: A laundry room with dryers is available on the island, with a full laundromat located nearby in Bath for more extensive needs.
Game Room: The Kelp Shed also houses a game room with billiards and other video games, offering an indoor activity option, especially on cooler days.
Hermit Island Campground is celebrated for its distinctive features and highlights that create an unparalleled coastal camping experience in Maine.
Unplugged Coastal Immersion: This is the ultimate highlight. Hermit Island encourages campers to truly "rough it with a tent in the woods" and disconnect. Cell service is notoriously spotty, fostering an environment where visitors can fully engage with nature, read, nap, and simply unwind without digital distractions. This deliberate "off-the-grid" feel is deeply valued by its returning guests.
Seven White Sand Swimming Beaches: The island boasts "seven white sand swimming beaches" and rocky coves. This abundance of diverse coastal access allows campers to explore different shores, enjoy swimming, beachcombing, and simply relaxing by the ocean, offering a quintessential Maine coastal experience.
Extensive Hiking Trail System: Miles of well-maintained hiking trails crisscross the 255-acre peninsula. These trails offer scenic views of the ocean, opportunities for wildlife observation (deer often wander through campsites), and the chance to explore the island's unique flora and fauna, including areas like Joe's Head and Osprey Point with stunning vistas.
Generational Family Tradition: As noted in reviews, "families have been coming year after year and love it every time." This speaks to a strong, established community and a tradition of cherished memories, creating a welcoming and familiar atmosphere for regulars and new visitors alike. The campground has been operating since 1952, cementing its legacy.
Fresh Local Seafood: The on-site store offers the unique feature of selling fresh lobsters and steamers, with the option to rent a pot for cooking. This allows campers to enjoy an authentic Maine seaside feast right at their campsite, a truly memorable experience.
Variety of Campsite Settings: With sites ranging from "ocean prime" with direct ocean views to wooded and private options, campers can choose a setting that best suits their preference for sun, shade, or proximity to the water, ensuring a personalized experience.
No RVs or Hard-Top Campers: The policy of only allowing tents, pop-up trailers, and truck campers maintains the rustic ambiance and natural feel of the island, preventing the development of a more commercialized RV park environment.
While specific, regularly advertised "promotions" in the traditional sense might not be a primary focus for **Hermit Island Campground** due to its established popularity and unique, rustic appeal, the value it offers lies in its consistent experience and the opportunities it provides.
Off-Season Rates: The campground does offer "Off-Season" rates, typically from late May to late June (excluding Memorial Day) and from late September to mid-October. During these periods, rates for all site types are generally reduced compared to peak season (e.g., Ocean View and Prime sites for $59, Choice and Value for $49 plus tax). This provides a more affordable option for those able to visit outside the busiest summer weeks.
Traditional Booking Method (A "Feature"): The booking process itself, often involving mailing in a letter for reservations, is a unique aspect that, while not a "promotion," adds to the campground's charm and helps manage demand, ensuring a dedicated clientele. Early booking (sending requests by early December for January processing) is highly recommended for prime spots, especially for stays of 7 nights or longer and holiday weekends.
Long-Term Family Value: The consistent nature of the campground and its appeal to multi-generational families means that the "promotion" is the reliable, cherished annual tradition it offers. The intangible value of returning to a beloved spot year after year, with a strong community, is a significant draw for many.

Hermit Island Campground Office Reviews
This is a place where families have been coming year after year and love it every time. Anyone who rates this campsite based on cleanliness or how nice the properties are should not be going there in the first place / did not truly enjoy the nature of camping at Hermit Island. Nice facilities would completely take away from the feel of the island in my opinion - when you go to Hermits you are truly roughing it with a tent in the woods and that's why people love it. If you cannot handle that then do not go.

Jul 15, 2014 · Kyle LibbyMy family's favorite place. We wait all year to get there, and it's worth the 4 hour drive. Creature comforts leave something to be desired, but who cares? Beautiful beaches for campers only. Hiking, kayaking, fishing, crabbing, bird watching, lobster eating, and on and on. We left the campground once in the whole week! You might find cheaper camping. You might find nicer bathrooms. But you won't find an equal to this place. One warning: you must be ready to fend off mosquitoes! Camp fires, citronella candles and bug spray are needed!
