Good location and fishing. great boat launch. Camp host ruined the weekend. Just didnt like us i guess. Dogs, kids, boats and we didnt go to bed at 9 pm. Lied to us and said we had to check out at 11 and it was reserved. Which it was not. Said we could take firewood which was cut from surrounding area fire mitigation for campfires then yelled at us for doing so because we grabbed some after his 9 pm bed time. the dumpster is also monitored and regulated by the camp host. So crush your box or youll get the boot! The bathrooms were ok. The road is absolutely horrible down to the launch, but thats how it goes.Best thing about hellgate is the 24 hour boat launch. And it is very well built and well taken care of. And its free. Lots of people at day use areas and people on the beach swimming, shooting carp etc!Reserve in advance. Thats your only shot. - Chris Eckermann

Hellgate Group Campground is uniquely situated on Hellgate Canyon Rd, Helena, MT 59602, USA. This address places it directly on the eastern shore of Canyon Ferry Lake, one of Montana's largest and most popular reservoirs. Its proximity to Helena, Montana's state capital, is a significant advantage for local users, making it an easily accessible destination for a quick getaway or an extended stay.

For residents of Helena, the campground is just a short drive—approximately 25 miles—east on Canyon Ferry Road (County Road 430), then northeast on Secondary 284. This convenient distance means less time traveling and more time enjoying the lake and surrounding natural beauty. Even for those coming from other major Montana cities like Bozeman or Great Falls, the drive to Hellgate is manageable, typically within a 1 to 2-hour range, making it a viable option for weekend trips.

While the campground boasts excellent lake access, it's worth noting the feedback regarding the access road. As one reviewer mentioned, "The road is absolutely horrible down to the launch, but that’s how it goes." This suggests that while navigable, campers should be prepared for potentially rough or unpaved sections, especially when towing boats or RVs. Despite this, the presence of a "very well built and well taken care of" 24-hour boat launch underscores the commitment to facilitating water access, which is a major draw for this location.

The strategic position of Hellgate Group Campground allows for stunning views of Canyon Ferry Reservoir, framed by the Big Belt and Elkhorn mountain ranges. This blend of lakeside recreation and mountainous backdrops offers a truly authentic Montana experience, easily within reach for locals.
