This spot was great. We loved the long sand bottom to dock the houseboat and swim. No grass or rocks to worry about if you have a slide off the back of the boat. Also great kayaking out to the right (when facing the island). Great inlets to see various birds including ducks, geese and loons. There are also several bald eagle nest in the area with bald eagle pairs. The only con, it gets full sun all day, so it can heat up a houseboat quick. However, it is close (10-15 mins) ride to Ellsworth Rock Gardens with the little tow behind boat. - Chelsea Kelly-Sipe

It is designed to accommodate houseboats for overnight stays and offers essential amenities for a comfortable wilderness experience. It's important to understand that services differ from a tent campsite or a commercial resort, focusing on the basics needed for houseboat mooring and shore access:

  • Houseboat Mooring: The primary service is providing a designated location for houseboats to moor overnight. This site is particularly noted for its "long sand bottom" ideal for docking.
  • Fire Ring: A metal fire ring is typically provided at designated houseboat sites, allowing for safe campfires. Campers should only use fires within these rings and follow all park regulations, including bringing DNR-approved firewood or collecting dead and downed wood.

However, the primary recommendation for houseboat campers is to store all food, trash, and scented items inside the houseboat itself to ensure bear safety.
  • Outdoor Privy: An outdoor vault toilet (privy) is generally provided on shore at designated houseboat sites for sanitation purposes.
  • Swimming Access: The long sand bottom provides excellent swimming access directly from the houseboat, a highly valued feature for visitors.
  • Accessibility for Small Boats: The site's design allows for easy launching and retrieval of smaller boats (like fishing boats or kayaks towed behind houseboats), enabling further exploration of the surrounding inlets.

  • Exceptional Swimming Conditions: The sandy bottom also creates a fantastic swimming area directly from the houseboat, offering a safe and enjoyable aquatic experience.
  • Kayaking Opportunities: The area to the right of the site (when facing the island) is noted for "great kayaking," with inlets perfect for peaceful paddles and exploration.
  • Abundant Birdwatching: These inlets and the surrounding natural environment are rich in birdlife, offering excellent opportunities to observe various species, including "ducks, geese and loons."
