Hazlett Hollow Campground

Campground ★4.0

Crown King, AZ 86343, USA

4.0
Had the entire campground to ourselves. Not maintained any longer by the forest service but it is still clean. Restroom is nothing but an outhouse but had toilet paper and didn't stink too bad like alot do. Small lake about a half mile away. Please pack your trash out and keep this place clean! And please drown your campfire in water before you leave. - Duane Leeth

Hazlett Hollow Campground Introduce

For Arizona's seasoned campers and adventurers, finding a campground that feels truly off the grid yet still provides a few essential comforts is a rare treat. Hazlett Hollow Campground, located near the historic mining town of Crown King, is just such a place. This is not a heavily developed recreation area; it's a semi-primitive campground nestled in the southern end of the rugged Bradshaw Mountains. It offers a unique opportunity to escape the crowds and immerse yourself in a quiet, forested environment. This guide will provide an honest, factual overview of what to expect from a camping trip to Hazlett Hollow, helping you prepare for a memorable and self-sufficient adventure in one of Arizona's most secluded spots.

Hazlett Hollow is a testament to the diverse landscapes of the Prescott National Forest. Tucked away in the Horsethief Basin area, it's a place where the air is cool, the ponderosa pines are dominant, and the scenery is spectacular. The campground's historic stone walls and walks, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s, add a layer of rustic charm and a sense of history. It's a place where you can find solitude and feel like you have the "entire campground to ourselves," as one recent visitor noted. We will delve into the specifics of its location, the services it offers, and the features that make it a compelling choice for those with a sense of adventure.

By the end of this article, you will have a clear understanding of the unique character of Hazlett Hollow and be well-equipped to plan a responsible and enjoyable trip to this secluded Arizona gem.

Hazlett Hollow Campground is located in the Horsethief Basin Recreation Area near Crown King, AZ 86343, USA. Getting there is part of the adventure. A high-clearance 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended, as the road from Crown King to the campground is rough and unpaved. One reviewer noted that their "stock F-150 4x4...was more than adequate" for the 25-minute drive from town. This challenging access road is a natural filter that keeps the campground from becoming overcrowded, ensuring a more secluded experience.

The campground’s secluded location is its greatest asset. It is nestled in a remote part of the Bradshaw Mountains, which provides a cool escape from the summer heat of Phoenix and the surrounding desert. On-site parking is available at each of the 15 sites, which are designed to accommodate vehicles and trailers up to a maximum length of 40 feet, though most are on the smaller side. The sites are well-spaced, which contributes to the feeling of having the place to yourself.

The journey to Hazlett Hollow is a significant part of the experience, offering spectacular views of the rugged terrain and a true sense of getting away from it all.

Despite its remote location and semi-primitive status, Hazlett Hollow provides a few key amenities that make a rustic camping trip more comfortable.

  • Public Restrooms: The campground is equipped with vault toilets. As one reviewer mentioned, while it's a simple outhouse, it was found to be clean and well-maintained.
  • Running Water: There is a water hydrant available in the campground, which is a significant amenity for a primitive site. However, it's important to note that the water is not for filling RV water tanks, and it's always a good idea to bring your own supply in case of maintenance issues.
  • RV and Tent Sites: The campground caters to both RV and tent campers. While there are no electric or sewer hookups, some sites have RV water hookups. Each site is also equipped with a picnic table and grill. Many sites also feature a unique 3-sided wooden shelter with a concrete floor, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).
  • Dogs Allowed: The campground is pet-friendly, allowing you to bring your furry friends along to enjoy the secluded area.
  • Camping Fee: A camping fee is required to stay at the campground. Since it is not maintained by the Forest Service, this fee may be managed by a private entity or a "first-come, first-served" system.

The highlights of Hazlett Hollow are centered on its natural and historical character, as well as the recreational opportunities in the surrounding area.

  • Secluded and Quiet: The most significant highlight is the campground's seclusion. The challenging access road and limited number of sites mean you are likely to find a peaceful, private spot to yourself, far from the noise of more popular campgrounds.
  • Proximity to Horsethief Lake: A "small lake about a half mile away" is a major draw. This is Horsethief Lake, a popular spot for fishing and swimming on warm afternoons. It provides a welcome aquatic escape in the mountains and is a great place to spend a hot day.
  • Historic Structures: The stone walls, walkways, and wooden shelters built by the CCC in the 1930s give the campground a unique, historical feel. These structures are not only functional but also add to the campground's rustic charm.
  • Good for Kids: The natural setting and proximity to the lake make Hazlett Hollow a great place for kids to explore and play, allowing them to experience nature without the distractions of a developed park.

For more information and to check on current conditions, it's best to contact the managing authority for the area.

Address: Crown King, AZ 86343, USA

Phone: While no direct phone number is listed for the campground, it is part of the Bradshaw Ranger District of the Prescott National Forest. You can contact their office at (928) 443-8000 for information on road conditions and fire restrictions.

What makes Hazlett Hollow worth choosing is its blend of seclusion and key amenities. For those who own a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle and seek a true escape from the bustling city life of Phoenix and Prescott, this campground is a perfect fit. The challenging road serves as a gatekeeper, ensuring that the campground remains quiet and uncrowded. The presence of vault toilets, running water, and picnic tables provides just enough comfort to make the experience enjoyable without taking away from its primitive, off-grid feel.

The proximity to Horsethief Lake is a major bonus. Having a place to swim and fish just a short walk from your campsite is a significant advantage in the Arizona mountains. The campground's historical significance, with its CCC-built features, gives it a unique character that is hard to find elsewhere. It’s a place for adventurers who are prepared to "pack your trash out" and who appreciate the effort it takes to preserve a wild space.

Ultimately, Hazlett Hollow is a perfect destination for those who value peace and quiet over convenience. It's a testament to the hidden beauty of the Bradshaw Mountains and a great reminder that some of Arizona's best camping spots require a little extra effort to reach, but the rewards—in terms of solitude, natural beauty, and a sense of adventure—are well worth it.
